You'll have to forgive the video for being a bit amateur and dated - I had 400 subs when this this first uploaded!! Hopefully you find it helpful to have some real examples to compare x

I don't know why people think the description of natural essence to be negative....its just a perception because we associate words like "simple", "ordinary", "asimmetric" with a negative connotation...but its what allows them to make casual messy looks look intentional, what makes them approachable. Modern media want everyone perfect, symmetrical, cleancut, extraordinary...most people are beautiful being average.

I've always interpreted "natural essence" as 'features that people in their 30s and younger don't normally go for when deciding what they want from plastic surgery.' Like, you never hear someone say "My nose looks too much like a ski slope, can you just put a bump on the bridge please?" Or "My eyes aren't small enough, could you lower my brow?" If you have these traits naturally then that's fine, but as you've said, there's a certain look most people go for when getting plastic surgery. That's why, even if these features are natural on a person, they tend to not get labeled as such because they're commonly associated with plastic surgery

What a wonderful idea to redo this with actual real life faces! It made me think of an issue that you could maybe address in one of your future videos: A good friend of mine is very likely a Romantic. Her whole adult life, she has been called "cute" or "adorable" and this is a real problem for her because people - especially men - do not take her seriously. She is not granted the respect that she deserves just because of her face and she tries really hard with piercings and tattoos and dark, loose fitting clothes to counter this youthful and innocent impression. Even though her and I are equally confident and outspoken women, I, as a classic, have much less trouble commading the respect that I am due. Maybe you could do a video discussing how women of different essences can display confidence, competence and seriousness through their clothing? That would be amazing! And maybe you could include more images of people of different weights and race to be helpful for more of us. Thank you so much for your work! I love the way yu explain these abstract concepts and make them into tools, we can all use in our every day wardorbes.

If she’s been called “cute” and “adorable” a lot as an adult, could it be that she actually has a very strong ingenue essence? My understanding of it is that it’s basically a more bright and youthful version of the romantic essence. Sorry, I know this doesn’t address your concern, but I couldn’t help being curious. I hope Ellie does do a video addressing this because it’s a pretty interesting and useful idea.

As someone who regularly receives similar comments and also isn’t taken seriously by men, in my experience men often use more innocent-sounding words like that to try and disguise (very unsuccessfully) the inappropriate and creepy nature of their comments/attitude/behaviour. I’ve also been called cute in a genuine way many times before and the difference is obvious! I don’t know if what I described is the same as how men treat the original commenter’s friend but it’s possible. I don’t know my essences so I can’t really comment on that, red hair seems to be enough on its own to make men think all kinds of weird, invasive behaviour is justifiable…

I hope this doesn't sound too harsh, I am really trying to help but "trying really hard with piercings and tattoos and dark, loose fitting clothes" does not at all "counter a youthful and innocent impression". In fact it almost always does the exact opposite as the style is associated with teenagers. Especially on someone that is smaller and softer in appearance, the loose fitting clothing will contrast those traits and exaggerate them, make her look even smaller, softer and not to be taken seriously because she hides instead of daring to take up space. This is the same for all types, if someone is long, sharp and large and puts on something that looks really cute and girly on for example a Soft Gamine, it does not make the person as a whole look more cute and girly because it contrasts their features instead of harmonise with them. This contrast vs harmony concept is the basis for the whole system and extremely useful to understand when figuring out how one comes across to others and what response it evokes in them.

One thing I'd love to see is how to dress for your 'opposite.' for example, I see myself as an ingenue with some romantic essence, maybe a bit of ethereal - but I don't like being perceived as 'cute / adorable' or 'feminine.' I much prefer to dress more 'natural' and 'relaxed.' I don't like frilly dresses, pink, or really anything like that. so I'd love a video on dressing more within the yin / yang balance, but the less-traditional stuff! I'm sure a dramatic out there loves dressing femininely, but how would they do that without looking 'costumey?' I hope that makes sense!

Anya Taylor Joy is a dramatic, and dresses very feminine. She also has ethereal essence too. But her body type, is dramatic. And she has sharpness in her face too. I think she looks VERY STRIKING. In very feminine clothing. It does look costumey, *but IN A GOOD WAY. Like she looks so interesting ya know. If it wasn't for that dramatic essence. She wouldn't look as beautiful imo, and just blend in, with others. Instead of standing out

Can you match each one up with their contrast? Can a Natural share a lot of Flamboyance with a Romantic and thus carry off many of the same clothes with a tweak for the shape? Which would dramatic parallel? Gamine and Ingenue?

Janelle Monae, Audrey Hepburn, Winona Ryder, Twiggy, Emma Watson are gamine. Nicola Coughlan, Halle Bailey, and Elle Fanning are ingenues Nicola, Halle, and Elle: round short nose, round face, naturally round fluffy eyebrows, round cheeks, Halle and Nicola have rounded lips. Soft chins or cleft chin. Gamines: sharp small lips with a defined cupids bow, sharp small but long noses, more defined sharper cheeks, sharp/pointy chin, small face/head, sharp thin pointy eyebrows. They have a lot of overlap though.

Ethereal are a little bit related to "angels " or alien looking and dramatic appear more powerfull dominant often can scary a little bit people and feel intimidating 🐅while ethereal have more of a calmer looking more airy and confident like they know what are doing and are not from the earth 🐎🫎 Ingenue and gamine have something in comon:youthfulness!! But gamines are more tomboyish like a boy who cant stop being playful always cheerfull!🦭 Ingenue are more like "little girl " because they have feminine features but unlike romantic the ingenue is youthfull , give the impression of being naive ,inocente (even if not) a girl who likes flowers, dresses, and is always happy🌸🐇

Willow Smith, Dakota and Elle Fanning, Cate Blanchett, Halle Bailey, and Liv Tyler are ethereals. Small eyes, long face, without makeup lips blend into the face, barely noticeable eyebrows naturally, high cheekbones, low nose bridge. They are just slightly soft. Dramatics: Anjelica Huston, Naomi Campbell, Lady Gaga, Keira Knightley, Emma Watson: strong straight or pointed/angular arched eyebrows, straight long very prominent nose, sharp jawline maybe rectangular or square face shape, prominent lips either in color or by shaping but still sharp. The best parallel is Jessica Chastain (dramatic) and Bryce Dallas Howard (ethereal) in non-smiling photos. Jessica is sharp where Bryce is soft/plush/light, nose, lips, eyebrows, cheeks, face shape.

I agree I feel like her face at least leans far too yin for classic. Although different perspective on classic styling, I would say I'm TR so not sure where I fit in here but I look pretty trash in classic lines. The more simple the more I just feel like garbage, even a plain coloured dress is really hard for me to work with. If I want to look good especially if it were a dress to go out seeing as the rest of the time I'm dressed for the gym, in work uniform or basic day to day clothes anyway 😅 but for a dress I would go for something floral or patterned, maybe with frills or embroidery or just anything that adds detail, and tbh the more detail the better. Even a nice simple black dress will look crap on me, I'd have to accessorise, have my hair curled a lot and lots of makeup or something to make up for the plainness of it 😅

Naturals are literally known as the type most models are!! I don’t doubt that there’s some bias, it’s just interesting to me how the words used to describe this type seem to have created a bias that is the reverse of what the bias is in other contexts

  • @marta83809
    @marta838093 ай бұрын

I'm a bit disappointed about your description for naturals. the word choices seem rather negative and almost portrayed as the more unfortunate contrast to dramatics (the backgroun music might have contributed to this). It often happens that natural essence is described as imperfect or average, and I feel like it might turn people off from finding their actual essence as it doesn't appeal at all compared to other types, while I believe that natural essence is a very common essence. so I hope that if you are planning on releasing a short about this type, that you might reconsider some word choices? besides that, I love that you're doing more content on essences! I never understood mine but then someone "typed" me and now I'm experimenting with it and noticing the harmony it brings. It works way better for me than body types. It's a great way to make my roots blend in with my looks.

"Average" can also mean "approachable" and "relatable" while "otherworldly" can also mean "weird" and "eccentric". I'd say Jennifer Aniston and Julia Roberts both have natural essence (my opinion!) and who doesn't want to look like that?! Lots of people find them very attractive! Whereas Tilda Swinton has ethereal essence and while she looks super striking, she isn't everyone's "type" either. Julia and Jennifer are perfect in girl-next-door roles, while Tilda would make a great Snow Queen or something 😆

I have quite a small delicate oval face with a decent amount of symmetry and people always compliment me when my hair is straight and central parted so I'm kinda quite classic but have this fun and quirky edge to me as my style roots are pretty much sun and flower with a bit of stone thrown in there. Tend to be drawn a lot to the more boho chic styles. My seasons I think is a summer one as I don't feel I'm striking enough for winter as it can wash me out a bit!

This is the most helpful video I've ever came across to understand my actual self!! I'm 26. And until age 25 my style was quite bohemian, overly girly, light pastel colours, and I loved it. But in my head my ideal self would dress smart, bold, put together, contrasting colours. At a certain point once becoming 25 I "hit a wall" and completely changed the way I dress and accessories, started wearing black and red after avoiding them for years, wearing high heels! Now I understand why the sudden and overwhelming change felt so right to me - I'm actually a dramatic-romantic! Can't thank you enough, I finally get it now ❤❤

I feel like I fall into ethereal category judging from the clothes type that fits me best (drapy, flowy transparent fabrics, foggy colors) and from the way many people perceive me. But at the same time I just feel to ugly and average to fall into this category 😢 Like my nose is wider than my chin and my face is long and fat at the same time... Who am I even...

I have a slightly more gamine type, but definitely more romantic or classic essence and facial features! This is probably why I'm so firmly in Theatrical Romantic, which to me, straddles the fences between gamine and romantic.

In what case might a "Natural " look good in some clothing suggested for Romantics? Things like bishop sleeves and blousey tops ,or more bouffant pleated pants (like the eighties) . Can a natural have a more romantic face shape? What essence would you call a baby faced look? Particularly on someone who is tall and columnal shaped build.

I wish you’d show photos of people 40’s-70’s. I can’t relate more than one or two features to any of these and the examples are all girls 20+ years younger than me so our faces & bodies have changed since then. Edit: I’m 4’10”, roundish square face(now) and stocky. It seems everything on the short side is very thin. At 120lbs I was still a bit pudgy w/a 28” waist.

I've besn convinced for a while I'm SN, yet I look alright in FN lines. Watching this, I'm seeing Natural and Dramatic in my face and wondering if it's that that allows me to get away with borrowing from the Yang side of my Kibbe type (I really don't think I am FN though as no matter how small I get, I always have a "soft" look).

Personally - i feel like too much detail looks distracting/ fussy on me and clean lines work best, with some element of "interest" like an unexpected pop of colour, interesting print (again, nothing too crazy haha) or unique piece of jewellery.

And see every single essence in one face. But it's best just to focus on your top 3 dominant essence. So the point is you can absolutly be etheral And dramatic
