    Todd, Old Pro here, long retired. This is a good tip for practice but a better one is the oldest one, avoid a tight grip, allow a tiny bit of release in the wrists. So many people, including McIlroy and Scheffler, try to "hold" the putter square, particularly under pressure, when they both miss so many 5 to 6 ft putts. From this range, as your monitor will tell you, just 1 degree out can miss. Much easier is to set the blade square at address, swing back and through allowing the putter to swing freely to its address position. If you try and hold it square, you have a 2 way miss, just watch McIlroy when he is going through a bad spell. Incidentally, he does the same with his short irons, tries to hold the blade square, gets a 2 way miss, often a toe strike, short and right. You might do a video on this, I would be interested to see how accurate you could be with a tight grip, see if you can "hold" the putter square to 1 degree accuracy. I doubt it.

    I glued two golf balls together and that is a very good training aid for a square face. It is very hard to get the two balls rolling perfectly.

    What works best for me on 2-10 footers is to keep my wrists very relaxed but steady and to let the weight of my mallet putter do majority of the work..like a pendulum. Don’t force the transition from back to forward but just assist gravity with the added pressure needed to get the ball to the cup. I noticed that I tried to control the face and stroke too much with a light putter which resulted in a lot of missed 3-5 footers. Lag putts I obviously have to use more brute force but that’s when you focus on speed instead of a perfect follow through.

    another visual drill is to start with 2 balls side by side and putt them at same time, the result will be either heel ball goes further, or toe ball goes further or both roll together.

    My putting was my weak link. I recently made a putter for myself and my brother with a block of walnut shaped to your standard mallet, 1/8" aluminum expoxied to the base, a steel wood shaft (46" untrimmed) where the lie angle is 90 degrees and we putt face-on, and I swing it like a pendulum. I'm am sinking 10' putts on my practice mat at a 70% clip, putting has never felt more comfortable... I'm going to shave at least 10 strokes off my game this summer. It's so easy to line up putts and feel confident in my chosen line, and my speed control is within inches now instead of feet. Give it a try ya'll.

    I work on getting the putter face square to my line by using a 4" piece of 1/2" PVC plastic pipe placed perpendicular to the line. If the putter face is not square to the line, either the toe or the heel of the putter will contact first and the pipe will spin offline. If it's square to the line, the pipe will roll straight forward. This method allows for a full swing with the putter, so you can practice short, long, firm or soft putts.

    Or... Find a straight put on the green. Mark a line to the hole. Your club face has to be straight anywhere on the line to make the put. You don't need $3000 in equipment to tell you that.

    Please don't think about this stuff when actually trying to score on the golf course, focus on speed and line - the stroke is the simplest actions in all of sports, the less you think about it the better you will putt.

    I don't understand the point of the first 1:45. Why would anyone want to 'slice' or 'hook' the clubface going back on a putt and hope the putter eventually comes square at impact? You're overthinking this!

  • @rayjones1455

    @rayjones1455

    5 ай бұрын

    No, the point of the first 1:45 is that sometimes golfers (especially beginner/occasional golfers) focus too much on club path (in-to-out or out-to-in) when putting. His extreme out-to-in putt and extreme in-to-out putt are basically canceled out by the square face. I know, myself, that practically every time I miss a short putt, it is because I get too rigid/formulaic on my path, and end up hitting a putt with an off-center face.

YOUR IN THE USA YES OK YOU COME TO THE UK AND TRY THAT ON OUR PRACTICE PUTTING GREEN AT WOOLLEY PARK GOLF CLUB WAKEFIELD ENGLAND, NOTHING AGAINST THE PUTTING GREEN BUT YOU WOULD BE LUCK IF YOUR WITHIN 8 FEET , LIKE THE COURSE WE DO NOT HAVE A LEVEL GREEN IN 18 HOLES PUTTING GREEN IS THE SAME . TAKE TODAY THERE IS THIS HOLE LEFT TOP NOW I HAVE TO AIM ABOUT 5FT LEFT AND THEN IT WILL RUN BY IF LUCKY BY 6FT . I DO NOT KNOW OF ANY PUTTING GREEN IN YORKSHIRE THATS LEVEL LIKE THAT. MIND YOU BALL GOES FURTHER THERE , THATS WHY PROS FROM ENGLAND GO TO YOUR PLACE . I WOULD GO SO FAR TO SAY ALL THE GREENS HAVE A MCENZIE IN SOME WAY
