If Saving Private Ryan was a German FIlm

Ever wondered what the masterpiece 'Saving Private Ryan' would've looked like if it was shot from the German perspective? Or on a budget of £30 with an inadequate amount of actors? Wonder no longer! Anyway, we would like to thank Star Trek: Fleet Command for sponsoring this video, check out the game here: wehy.pe/y/1/Squire

Then it ends with the commisar ordering the execution of the soldier for wasting his time, then shoots the guy that shot him, then himself.

    @@wisemankugelmemicus1701 Eisenhower wanted green troops in the initial waves--vets would know what kind of shitstorm they were wading into, and with the expected casualty rates of the first few waves, it made more sense to burn less valuable green troops (while making slower initial progress) than their veterans. The exceptions were the Ranger units, whose leadership, at least, had received additional training and were experienced. Overall, though, the initial waves were basically there to exhaust their ammunition supplies and overheat the barrels on their MG42s. Horrible calculus, but...necessary.

    @@gpweaver Not remotely true. While the majority of Omaha was assaulted by the inexperienced 29th Infantry Division, battle hardened troops from the 1st Infantry Division and 4 US Ranger Battalions aided them, as well as Navy Seebees and even a couple tank battalions. They simply used the resources at hand as were necessary to best complete the mission, as well, sending troops to “exhaust the German ammunition supply” runs counterintuitive to how the Germans operated, and it would actually be very arrogant to assume that they would operate any differently just because of the stress of combat whatever - because German machine gunners were actually trained to conserve ammunition, firing in 5-7 round bursts at a time. From the memoirs of both US and German veterans we know this didn’t happen, but it would be ignorant to presume that it would.

  • @gpweaver

    @gpweaver

    @@wisemankugelmemicus1701 You're right, I was being a bit hyperbolic, but basically, the 116th RCT of the 29th went in first on the Western end (Able company being the only one to land its assigned area; Easy was scattered on the Eastern end in the 1st Infantry's area, George ended up way to the East of Able.) Able, being in Dog Green and next to the line of bunkers providing enfilade fire along the length of the beach, were cut to pieces in minutes; the Rangers next to them didn't do much better. (Contrary to the way it appears in 'Saving Private Ryan', the Germans weren't so much shooting "straight down" on the debarking troops from the bunkers, as shooting across at them from their side as they tried to rush for cover across the open span of the beach. The pillboxes covering Dog Green, however, were somewhat elevated in the cliffs, as the terrain on the West end of the beach rises quickly.)

  • @cameronkedas3375

    @wisemankugelmemicus1701 Actually, most of Omaha was assaulted by the 1st Infantry Division, a few elements of the 29th, the 5th Ranger Battalion, and either 1-3 companies of the 2nd Ranger Battalion. The US only had 3 Ranger battalions after February 1944 because the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Ranger battalions sustained heavy casualties at the Battle of Cisterna at Anzio and were inactivated. After that, we had the 2nd and 5th battalions in Europe and the 6th in the Pacific, notably at the Philippines.
