Oof imagine trying to sit there and see your kid as you get some of these calls. Obviously they can’t hear it but… with some of the things that happen I would probably cry more if I was in the presence of anyone I love when hearing all that imagining it was happening to them. Maybe that’s my OCD intrusive thoughts but that is what my brain would be doing and I wouldn’t have any say in the matter.

That's unfortunately all 911 is for. Cops don't help you lmao, they show up 30 minutes after the accident and shrug.

As a 9-1-1 calltaker, I once really did stay on the line with a lady for almost 15 minutes waiting for police to show up while her son could be heard over the line screaming bloody murder and trying to break into her bathroom where she'd locked herself in. Our center was big enough to have dispatchers separate from calltakers, and so she's like "WHERE ARE THE POLICE" and in my head I'm just like "I DON'T KNOW DOING FUCK ALL I GUESS." I always tell people that if you're not keeling over right now, mise well drive yourself to the ER with these wait times.

Every single time ive called 911 has gone similar to this. Police are useless. My favorite was when me and my boss at the time were driving to the work site and ended up getting a tailgate full of bullet holes while on the highway fucking dispatch tells 19 yr old me "you think you could just stick your head out and tell use what exit your near...?"....ngl i kept it together till then and completely cussed the dude out.

Yeah, self defense instructor here, don't do the key thing. Go to a class and learn how to throw a proper punch and a few grapple breaks, maybe get your own pokey stick, your keys help facilitate your escape, if you drop them, damage them, or hurt yourself with them its much harder to get away using the things those keys unlock.

So that would make sense with a car key, but people likely have multiple keys like house keys, lock keys, etc. I am just saying if I have to choose between a plain fist vs a fist with jagged pieces of metal from it, I'll choose the ladder. Obviously get training and have better tools, but most people still won't do that so I this think the key thing isn't to bad of an idea.

My favorite is the small, bright, sturdy flashlight. You can shine light in their eyes to distract and give an exit, you can use it to better see your surroundings, and if you need to, you can make your hits land harder when you're holding it. Best of all, it doesn't classify as a weapon so you can really carry it anywhere. (Props to hard2hurt, where I learned this)

I just called 911 yesterday i was driving and saw a guy face downin the grass then he started to wave people down. He was on the other side of the road i couldnt pull over plus i had my kids in the car. So much traffic i couldnt turn around the police didnt answer so i told them i felt bad i couldnt check on him but it looked like he needed help. Almost looked like an OD or heart attack. I hope he was ok. They promised they were gonna send people. Then a few months back i grabbed my mom cuz i found a dude down the block (i drove 50) she knows cpr and there was no way i was getting him out by myself thank God he was just sleeping but the door was open it didnt look like he was breathing and soooo many cars passed by him without a 2nd look it was very sad but thamk God he was ok

💀 I’ve had dispatchers do that shit to me. I’m now convinced this is what the ones I’ve spoken to, were actually doing. Edit: Obviously I have A LOT of respect for those in ems, it’s bad. I wanted to be EMS, but I know that my own medical conditions may impede me on top of the fact that they DO NOT pay even a SURVIVABLE wage, for the positions I would have been, in my location. We need better things in place to prevent burn out, and prevent people who truly cannot do the job, from having any communication with GP… especially when you take into account that most of the people they’d be talking to are often in a state of duress. 💀

Keys are a terrible self-defense mechanism. The only thing they’re good for is opening your car and getting it going. Do not use them as a weapon-you will regret it. Flashlights, on the other hand, are fantastic for self defense.

Realistically, a 911 dispatcher could work from home without any drawbacks, as long as they're supplied with the same systems they would use in person. It wouldn't really matter.

controversial opinion not related to this situation: citizens should be able to text 911 especially if you’re in a situation where you cannot talk on the phone (i.e. kidnapping, bad situation where you can’t pretend to order a pizza, hostage etc). they should also make a more efficient non emergency line/number to call for things that don’t really need a 911 response but still need a response.
