Idle Tuning Using HP Tuners | GM Tuning

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Middle of winter in the snow, sun beating down in the heat of summer, it doesn't matter, as tuners we want to be able to simply twist the key, crank the car over and have it start and settle at a sensible RPM and idle without stalling.
While that seems like an easy goal, for many including those tuning professionally, there are a few traps and poor adjustments to work through especially when an aftermarket cam is fitted.
We're using a GM LS powered vehicle for this lesson, but many of the concepts will apply to more than just this single application.

So few comments. I love the amount of knowledge you guys drop for free. I have several tuning courses i've purchased and been working through and I can honestly say they approach you guys take towards teaching is second to none.

Learning so much, you would not believe what I’ve been through to try to get people to tune this car, I keep getting ignored or turned down so I’ll just do it myself with your help Andre!

Good video guys. I've lost count of the amount of VE/VF's I've retuned with holes drilled in the t/b, even on cams in the 220s range.

First off I want to say thank you for all the information that you give all of us I've learned a lot from it. I was wondering couldn't find a video on heat soak. If I shut the car off turn it back on 20 minutes later car runs lean for a little bit and then is fine Do you have a video on this?

Not yet! Planned for 2022 though although what we currently have course material wise is more than enough to get you up and tuning with that platform, the software will just look a bit different to what we have in the current examples is all - Taz.

Hi. Why can I not find the “effective area” where it has the “percent max” adjustment for idle under idle and airflow. All the tuners online when I watch KZread videos doesn’t show up on theirs either. I’d like to be able to adjust it if I need to, to avoid drilling holes in the throttle body baffle

Drilling holes in the FBW blades see it all the time from intelligent individuals 😂....Like you said causes other issues and one is idle hang big time which then you need to spend half a day to tune it out ,but instead of wasting stressful time i just pull the throttle body apart and replace the blades..Final words people that drill holes in FBW throttle need to put the drill /Laptop down and go and learn how to tune properly...

Any lesson on tuning should have a lesson plan and start with an overview on how the idle strategy works, what tables are involved, how they interact with each other, when they are and are not active, what kinds of parameters are stored in memory, and take a fairly deep dive into the subject. Skipping right to the lab/ practical teaches very little. Tuning braf is just one of many steps to tuning idle and you didn't even explain what it does or why you are tuning it or what happens when you don't. Also, while it may be counter to what your shop sees, most people I know who would be interested in buying your course are DIYers working with LS swaps. Almost all of them have large cams along with aftermarket/larger than stock cable throttle bodies. Very few of these guys are running DBW throttle bodies. Guys running DBW setups are less likely to be DIYers and more likely to pay a shop to work on their stuff.

In this case, I don't think the strategy is understood. Usually Andre is pretty sharp, but this one missed the mark. Despite it being an idle tuning video, one of the rare opportunities to do actual tuning....none of the PID gains were tuned or even mentioned. What was shown here is something I call the 'trampoline toon'...raise the minimum airflow to excess and let adaptive spark do all the heavy lifting, effectively fighting itself due to clipped control authority. The result is a passable idle, but sluggish transitions on and off pedal, often slow return to idle, increased exhaust fumes/HC smell, higher than normal EGT and engine temps, and more. The problem and solution mentioned at 19:00 is something that should have been addressed with the idle airflow integral gains that in stock form are too aggressive for a cammed vehicle. Granted, these are not variables that can be monitored with the gen4 stuff and must be calibrated indirectly...but that's no excuse to ignore them. Not to roast the guy here...but this was not idle tuning.

@@anasasisxenophontis I've never seen comprehensive tuning content in one place (paid or free) that actually teaches how the systems work and will take a tuner from startup to idle and idle transitions to driveability tuning. They all spend a huge amount of time doing simple maf or VE tuning and very little on teaching how the systems work. They all say to "do this" with no reasons why, leaving the student with only superficial knowledge and no ability to handle issues that arise. When pressed, most are not able to articulate answers leaving me to question if they actually understand what they are teaching. One example, I paid big money for an in person week long beginner and advanced class. Got home and tried to tune my stock '08 TBSS and could not get consistent fueling results... Of course this was the rich after reflash issue that they had not even noticed almost 10 years after the ECU's were released. My advice to people is to ask for a syllabus before spending money on these courses. If it does not specifically list an overview and every table you need to tune as part of the idle strategy along with time spent on the subject matter, look elsewhere. Especially if they advertise gen 3 and gen 4 but will not cover tuning a drive by cable car. I'm very sour about this industry.

@@mxguy2438 You are right to be sour about it. There's a lot of opportunistic people out there who take advantage of people's general ignorance to what is possible with engine calibration. I am happy to claim that I know the physics, the control strategy and much of the manner in which the algorithms are executed in the controller, but that's only because I've been studying it for over a decade and did both the calibration and software design for the big 3 in Detroit. To really explain some of these topics, it has to be broken down into details that are too deep into engineering for the layman. Hence, you get these kinds of videos. If someone asks how to calibrate for stable idle and drivability and I hand them a stack of textbooks...I doubt they'd be too pleased lol. But that's what it requires to really dial it in properly. I've considered hosting my own 'tuning classes', but I fear it would get far too into the weeds with detail to keep any real interest.

@@anasasisxenophontis I understand what you are saying, and for 75% of people who are getting interested in tuning, you are probably right. Not everyone has the aptitude or commitment to learn it. I don't think another basic course or a course on theory is needed. Just assume you are writing it for the top 20% who already have read a couple "how efi works" type books and have already gotten their feet wet. No point in writing a basic course when you can already get that info for $20 at Barnes and Noble. In the meantime, can you offer a suggested reading list? I don't need fundamentals, i need controller specific documentation.

Give me some examples one what specific 'stupid things' are being said please so I can take a look and understand what you mean. Do note these are filmed live and are not scripted like the course material so while they should be on point, they won't always be quite as succinct. Andre does his best either way - Taz.
