5 Things You're Doing WRONG | Camshaft Selection and Tuning [

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Should you drill a hole in your throttle butterfly to get perfect idle? Spoiler alert.....NO.
So many people get some, or worst case scenario ALL, of these 5 points wrong when selecting and setting up their performance cam/s. So what are they?
1.) Choosing the wrong camshaft
2.) Not setting the timing correctly
3.) No supporting modifications
4.) Incorrect idle speed
5.) Getting it all wrong, then making it worse, with a drill
Firstly Andre runs us through some of the basic yet so often overlooked questions you need to ask when choosing the correct cam for your application. For example, what application is going to see you wanting an aggressive cam, and when would one actually be detrimental to performance and your vehicles drive-ability?
Up next is getting the cam timing wrong. An INSANE amount of people spend big money on a cam, then just set it to 0 and send it - not ideal. When incorrect this can at best cause loss of performance (the opposite goal of fitting our cam) and at worst cause valve to piston contact, which is going to cost you much more than the time and tools it takes to do it right.
Following on from this, it is also important to have the correct supporting components to go along with the bigger cam, valves, higher flow air intake and a freer flowing exhaust system which are generally modifications that are naturally done beforehand anyway, but are missed often enough to make it worth a mention.
The last two common issues we’ve seen countless times revolve around idle tuning. Firstly is targeting an idle that is to low. With the OEM cam out of the picture, and in particular if you have better an aggressive aftermarket cam, the OEM idle speed also needs to go in order to save you hours and hours of trying to make something work that simply never will, or even worse, drilling a hole in your throttle body butterfly as a way to compensate for poor, or non-existent, tuning. Again though, Andre shares the solution to help you make the correct changes and get better results.
Lastly we take a look through the Practical Reflash Tuning course where you’ll learn from start to finish how to reflash your stock ECU in 6 steps, even if you have installed an aftermarket cam in your car.

Funny this came up on my feed after ordering 280/272 cams for my E46 M3. I decided not to go for the more track focused 288/280 cams.

Add a few deg. ign. timing and taking fuel out the idle RPM area is worth doing, but going much over 270deg 240deg@ 1mm lift is going to make life difficult on any road engine. If you can't get the emissions down to near factory, it's not going on the road anyway. In the UK there used to be an allowance for modified vehicles built after 1992 up to 2006 ( up to 300 ppm H/C), that loophole closed about 4-5 years ago

The ol' drilled throttle body "trick"... Only jedi level tuners employ this ancient technique 🤣😂🤣😂

Just ran across your video, because I'm battling lean codes, O2 sensor voltage fluctuations, MAF codes, put a Texas speed stage 2 cam along with alot of other goodies including higher stall converter in my 13 Caprice PPV with the L77 motor, my remote tuner says I should just delete some of those not needed sensors since the motor runs strong and healthy. Can a cam ever get along with a stock OEM ECM? Thanks for Sharing :)

So, on cold starts I get some fuel spitting out if the exhaust, should I add more air using the base running airflow, or can I pull fuel out from the start up fuel?

Morning great intel Ive just acquired a ls1 2001 statesmen for our family cruise machine. Ive also just aquired the BTR truck norris cam 212-22X (553lift) with a LSA of 107.5 a great little cam with great tourqe assets. As we know the ls engine produces good hp im wanting the tourqe over hp and a rough idle witch this cam is for the specs good cruise option for us - your thoughts? We will need the deletion intell pack also to get going. With the combination of the ls1 gear drive and glimer belt added it should be a great family ride that turns a few heads Great channel once again Id just like your thoughts.

Where do you live or where were the tuners? Back when I started out there wasn't any LS tuners around so I learned on my own. Been doing it for 21 years now and have seen some seriously hacked up tunes folks pay big money for

You are saying it is never advisable to drill a hole no matter what and you are a lousy tooner if you do?

I would definitely say that. I've been told to drill (or even bend the bottom edge of throttle blade) and thought nah! Then started sorting tune properly and proved it wasn't required. Was a GMH V8 for reference.

Doesn't seem like a proper way to bring the idle up. Like kicking the can down the street.

Only time I've seen it really needed was in the early days of cable throttle bodys. Either you run out of IAC range and suffer from poor cold starts or you can only adjust your throttle blade to a certain point where the PCM is unhappy seeing more than 1.5% TPS after a reset. Certain size hole in the blade cured poor cold starts and keeps the PCM happy since TPS% can be below 1%.
