Does it really have to ne connected with sex to be meaningful? Like it's impossible to have deep devotion, loyalty and sense of being responsible to one a other WITHOUT it actually being connected to the bedroom. If that's the case, I must say that I am sorry but you never really understood what friendship is. Now, I know the novel does make it a lesbian romance and I have no problem with that, because all the art should portray our human experiences. Because we never see Idgie at the end and the “knowing” look Ninny and Evelyn give each other plus the jar of honey and letter on the head stone. I thought it was an “aha” moment and Evelyn understood that Ninny was actually Idgie. It was today as I was watching it I started googling parts of the movie that I learned Ninny was Idgie’s sister in law. Because I had formed this conclusion when I was 8 or something, I never questioned it.

I think they both had a lot of love for each other, Ruth’s opinion on men was destroyed after the countless beatings from her husband, while living in fear. Plus both Idgie and Ruth felt connected because they both loved Buddy, the both of them witnessed him die. Ruth clearly was in love with him, and Buddy was Idgies best friend and brother. You even see at the end where Ruth is buried, she’s buried right beside Buddy. I don’t know if there was fully a lesbian relationship, but I do think there was love and feelings because of what they had been through. They connected on a deeper level. Ruth tells Idgie even when she’s dying to find a man and settle down. Maybe there was something that happened behind closed doors, but that wasn’t the message they wanted to show clearly. They didn’t need too, we saw their friendship, their love and connection throughout the movie perfectly, I didn’t need to see them kiss or anything like that to prove anything to me.

in the book buddy and ruth never even met, ruth came into the scene about 3/4 years after buddy dies. the book makes it clear ruth was in love with idgy even before ruth got married, actually that realization made her leave the family house and go back to georgia to marry frank, because she felt guilty and thought it was wrong loving idgy, because she was like 5 or 6 years younger, and plus the obvious, she was a girl. i hope they could make a remake to truly show this love story as it was meant to be, however matching the magic of the 2 original actresses would be a challenge
@cece0910

Ruth didn't tell Idgie to find a man. She told her to "find someone." I think it's clear that they had a deep love for each other. How far they went is for the viewer to decide. What we can all agree on is that the relationship they had was just like that of other people who shared had a life together. They started a business, raised a child together, and did everything for each other. They were a family and no one can deny that. I mean, Ruth knew all along that she and Buddy Jr. were the ones keeping Idgie from settling down with "someone else." Idgie's response was that she was as settled as she had always hoped to be. Deep down they both knew that Idgie probably would have stayed alone had Ruth and Buddy Jr. not come into her life. Not because no one would have wanted her, but because Idgie herself would not have wanted it any other way. This is also made clear when Ruth asks her to find someone on her deathbed. She doesn't want Idgie to be alone. As I said, they are a family and how far their intimate relationship went is up to the viewer to decide.

It's unbelievable how a story so full of tragedies, dramas, wrongs and... unusual barbecues could make feel so happy , satisfied and life-lover!
One of my favorite if not my FAVORITE all time movie!
I'm autistic and even my 13 year old ass recognized the sapphic love between these two. If only they'd been born a few decades later.
Oooo I had to stop on..."because she's the best friend I ever had, and I lover her" because I can't bear to watch it any farther.💔
best movie ever made!!
I think I cried harder at this edit than I did in the actual movie. Wow. So much love for this.

@@dianagreen5700 there are so many fucking books/movies that depict female friendships. So many. This is one of the few books (especially written during this time) that depicted a female relationship in a romantic manner. The movie truly did do a disservice to the book by not incorporating their beautiful relationship.

Diana Green the book is literally about their lesbian relationship. how many movies are there about female friends?! So many. There was a reason why they straight washed their relationship and it could have been revolutionary in portraying a lesbian relationship that wasn’t through the male gaze

i read that the actors and the author/screenwriter wanted to depict a lesbian relationship but the director chose not to. i didn’t read the book yet, but i really wish the movie had explicitly stated that they were lovers.
Their relationships are very sweet. When Ruth died, I want to cry with Idgie. PS: Ninny may be Idgie in the movie, but they are clearly different persons in the book.

jamie and danni must be partially based on them, no? an outdoorsy woman and a schoolteacher falling in love? one traumatized by a previous relationship with a man, one willing to be by her side through it all.
I love this movie. I live in Ga. and I've ate at the Whistle Stop Cafe a couple of times. I haven't been in several years. I would love to go back someday. Love this movie! Still one of my all time favorites. Great story, with great actors. Made me laugh, cry and get angry at the mean characters, lol 😍
You got to be from the South to know, understand, and relate to this film
I’ve seen this a bajillion times. I always thought that Ninny was actually Idgie.

Sister in law, married idgie's brother theo. And, actually, the very end of the movie there is a brief scene of an older woman & man selling honey n (produce? I think) in a roadside stand.... THAT was Idgie n one of her, many, brothers. (I recommend the book, as much as I love this movie, the book is so much better ☺️ & I just saw Fannie Flagg wrote a "sequel" (told by, now 83yr old, Buddy Jr., Ruth's son). I've enjoyed many of Fannie's books n cannot wait to get my hands on "the wonder boy of whistle stop"!! 🤗😉
I love this movie so much you did such a great edit wonderful job!!! We will be heading to Juliette Georgia this summer I can't wait I've been waiting my whole life for this I'm 41 years old when I was a young kid I recorded it on my TV when it came on I recorded it with a VHS not many people know about that anymore 😂 I still got it somewhere it still has the weather bulletin and everything down in the corner haha which at the time I was like no you're ruining the movie 👀
Una de las historias más preciosas sobre el amor y la amistad. Río y lloro cada vez que la veo.
One of my favorite movies .
Had me in tears....
Great mashup of a great screen relationship.

Fun fact, in the book version Idgie and Ruth were also very obviously in love. But the director of the movie didn't want them to be gay, because he believed it wouldn't get as much traction. (I still see the love in the movie though. I think the actors pulled through.)
One of my family members was in that movie he was the tallest one in the cheering scene of the kkk scene he did it everyday so he can get my mama and her family some food it was mashed potatoes and chicken a white cake and something else but my mama told me she remembers that clearly but I can't find that one scene of the cheering
