Identically Different: Tim Spector at TEDxKingsCollegeLondon

Ғылым және технология

Tim Spector is a Professor of Genetic Epidemiology and Founder of TwinsUK. He has demonstrated the genetic basis of a wide range of common diseases, previously thought to be mainly due to ageing and environment. He has published over 600 research articles in prestigious journals including Science and Nature and is currently at the forefront of research in Epigenetics -- a new exciting research area into how genes can be altered. He is the author of several books for the scientific and public communities, most recently "Identically Different, why you can change your genes", and he also presents regularly in the media.
His talk challenges the current genetic dogma explaining why identical twins are far from identical and how environmental factors interplay with our genes to shape our health and identity.
About TEDx
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I had a great time with this! I recommend everybody to dive with Professor Spector in the world of epigenetics with this You tube. I found out my identically different "body" !

I really enjoyed this! Prof Spector has given epigenetics an overview in a witty and layman friendly fashion. Meanwhile it also highlights the importance of epigenetics in our understanding of human variations, diseases and inheritance with cutting-edge research. Highly recommended!

Tim’s work on the gut biome has me thinking that microbes rule the world and we are just vehicles for their global domination 😳

I recently viewed an episode of The Nature of Things in which Specter's work is featured. That led me to this TEDx video. I found it curious that while the topic of fecal transplant was discussed, the use of fecal transplant to treat C. Diff. was not mentioned (since C.Diff. is a horrible and painful outcome of antibiotic use). Regardless, I found your discussions highly informative to a layperson like myself. Thank you.

Can play, in your opinion alter the epigenetics of a human?
