Great video and very informative. I was wondering if you could help me with some questions reguarding my wife's mother's home remodel that I have been helping her with. I have a few pictures that may help with the details. The main question is, are you able to cut back rafter tails if a past addition had left them in on the new interior of the room. Everything is already built and drywalled in, they utilized an existing patio door as the entry way into the new room, but they left the soffit and rafter tails. Thank you for your time.

(From your video's, it doesnt seem as though the rafter tails bring any sort of structure or support to the walls or roof, if my understanding is correct)

Yes, most rafter tails are going to be supporting anything and can be cut off. Just make sure they are not structurally supporting something, before removing them.

Hello my house is designed just like this, and I wanted to add the same addition the way you demonstrated. But how or can it be done to add that addition to entire length of the house. If you can make a video for that I would greatly appreciate it..

Greg, thanks for the video, very helpful. If I have an existing hip roof with ceiling joists, and want to remove the ceiling joists & create a gyp board finish at the roof rafters for a cathedral ceiling, do I still need to support the hip roof with a post and beam? does the existing ridge board need to be reinforced with a ridge beam?

further, I would only be removing the ceiling joists for the portion of the hip roof, which continues to a gable roof, where the ceiling joists would remain wondering if this would provide enough structure that does not require reinforcement. the total length of the hip roof where the ceiling joists would be removed is 11'. posting an image would be easier but unfortunately I cannot do that. do you have an email I can send some images to?

Keep in mind that I cannot provide you with structural engineering advice, but most of the time a ridge beam is required, along with using larger lumber for the hips, if you're going to remove the ceiling joist

If the original structure has a gable roof, and the addition will be hip/vaulted, do both structures need the footing or just the addition?

  • @gregvancom

That's a difficult question to answer, because it all depends upon how the original structure and new-home addition are going to be built. Normally though most homes have building foundations and home additions do also.

Great video, graphics always make things so much easier to understand and for me personally allows to imagine in my head a design and where future loads would have to be transferred to.. what type of beam Would you suggest for the add on where the load bearing wall was removed? You could get away with steel potentially couldn’t you to keep it lower profile vs having a few gluelam beams nailed together.. what about a scissor roof meeting at a 90* Corner?

Could you make a video of how to make a porch on a house similar to the one you made here but without walls. Could you help me sending me a video to make an extended house & what items I need to make it so it could soft & facet. Could you please do that? Thank you!

Great design and explanation. But how would the design look to accommodate ceiling insulation for code of R-49 which is 14" thick for this vaulted roof framing?

  • @gregvancom

I'm pretty sure I already answered your question in another video, but will answer it again so others with the same question might be able to make sense out of it. You would need to use larger framing components like 2 x 16 roof rafters or find smaller insulation that will fit inside smaller lumber. Keep in mind that your video suggestion has been put on a list of videos to be made in the future, I just don't know when it will be made.

Thanks a lot for watching our videos and supporting our channel through comments, watching ads or even purchasing some of our books. Without your help, I wouldn’t be able to help others. With that said, you’re receiving this email because the question you’re asking requires something I cannot provide you with. I do not offer any paid services at this moment in time. This would include building design, building design suggestions and building plans.
