That Coke Adds Life theme was so warm and fuzzy. We know too much today to be swept up by that.

Idaho State pulled one of the biggest upsets in NCAA history, and no one talks about it. However those of us that live in East Idaho still talk about it. If UCLA had properly prepared for this game, (like if they had watched film) maybe they would have figured out how to beat ISU. Also this ISU team matched up very well with UCLA. Isu's center was 7-0 senior and played a few years in the NBA, compared to a 6-9 freshman advantage ISU. ISU was the better team. I just wish this game got more publicity now.

I knew how good ISU was, because Louisville (my team) had played ISU the previous season in Pocatello (this game was very nearly a rematch). The '76 game went down to the wire, as I was listening to it on radio. I believe the Cardinals won a fast break basket at the buzzer.

Remember, this was only 3 years after Wooden. John Wooden never saw tape. His philosophy was the prepare and coach his team to execute their game, regardless of the opponent. Guess times were changing.

This was back when the West Regional had teams from the West in it.

My team, Louisville, had UCLA on the ropes in the previous round, but the Bruins got one lucky bounce of the ball after another in the final minutes to hang on. That was nearly Denny Crum's last game. After Gene Bartow left UCLA following this loss to Idaho State, Denny talked with the school about returning to L.A. to coach the Bruins. But when the longtime Southern Californian landed back in Louisville and realized how quickly he could get home from the airport -- and how comfortable he had become in Louisville -- he called Westwood and said, no thanks. Denny had two rocky seasons ahead of him before Darrell Griffith, a freshman in this '77 tourney, matured greatly for his senior season. Darrell worked tirelessly to improve his game, inspiring the young 1980 Cardinals, and they won it all, and over UCLA.

Those goals need to make a comeback.

I was a kid when I watched this game with my uncle and cousin, who both played bball in college. The announcers mentioned Jeff Cook came from West Covina, CA, which I remember vividly because a lot of my family came from West Covina. Cook played a few years in the NBA, so he represented WesCo very well.....

I went to the same high school as Cook, I was a freshman,saw him as a senior on the varsity team, I believe he was player or the year in the San Gabriel valley, I was pulling for UCLA, yes, he representatived West Covina well, too bad the announcer miss pronounced West Covina as he was introducing Cook for the starting lineups.

Madame Catherine Deneuve with the highly sensuous purr after the Cougar growl in the "Lincoln Mercury Monarch" Commercial! Nice touch during an Idaho State Bengals game as well...😂😘😉🎤🚘💃🐅🏀🇫🇷🎥B.W.

That NBC theme song was so captivating.

Gene Bartow was fired after this loss. It was seen as unacceptable by everyone within UCLA losing so early in the tournament after all John Wooden had accomplished before him. However, In all fairness to Bartow, anyone following Wooden was in a no-win situation, anything less than winning it all would be seen as failure when compared to Wooden.

He actually wasn’t fired. He left for UAB in the summer of 1977 and UCLA needed to find a coach quickly. They ended up hiring former assistant Gary Cunningham who also lasted just two seasons (and almost left after one as he discovered he didn’t like the way recruiting had become)

@@paulsonj72 If anything UCLA allowed him to save face and resign, but everyone knows UCLA no longer wanted him after that Idaho State loss so I will just continue to call it as it actually was. He was going to be fired but was allowed him to resign.

Massive Upset !!!!!!!! 1977 the year of the Marquette Warriors !!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was the only year NBC did games from the Sweet 16 live in prime time. NCAA productions handled sweet 16 games in full until 1981. In 1982 when CBS took over they did one game each night in the 11:30 ET slot. In 1985 CBS expanded that to three games a night with one game in the late time slot. Not until 1988 were all Sweet 16 games televised by network TV and no late night games

By any chance do you have any footage of Cal State Fullerton’s run in the 1978 tournament? Their upsets of New Mexico, USF, or elite 8 game against Arkansas?

I was in middle school in 1977, played basketball on the school’s team, and was a big fan of Roy Hamilton of UCLA. I was so bummed when UCLA lost to DePaul in the elite 8 his senior season of ‘79. Very much enjoyed watching this video, brought back some good memories.

That loss to DePaul was devastating. My dad and I drove from LA to Provo for the West regional. Such a letdown after the huge win in the highly anticipated showdown with USF. I got to meet Roy Hamilton, David Greenwood and the rest of the team a couple years earlier at a team party at Gene Bartow’s house. I was friends with Bartow’s son Murry. Played horse with Hamilton and Greenwood.

I loved this video for many reasons.. first of all, the interview with Coach Tark was awesome .. the interviewer asked some great questions.. I was 11 years old and was a huge UCLA fan when this game was played. I was crushed with the results. Little did I know that I would play for Killer at TCU 8 yrs later . Ran the same offense and defense . Great stuff . Shout out to Jeff Cook . I grew up in Baldwin Park Ca, next city over from West Covina. Had heard lots from the TCU asst coaches about this game ..

The halftime interviews about "the return of the slam dunk" is classic. They all look so young, Knight, Boeheim, Coach K, Carril, etc.

I had just arrived to the state of Idaho for employment when this game happened, to say that the state was *_A-BUZZED_* by the outcome of this game would be understating it. Some people contended that one advantage ISU had was in the altitude of where the game was played at BYU with an elevation of 4500 feet, which was comparable to ISU's home court elevation at around 4300 feet; whereas UCLA home court was near sea level.

That was a great interview at the beginning by Tom Hawkins of Jerry Tarkanian. He asked some good questions, and Tark didn't get offended. He just answered the questions.

Never happen today. But I was a little offended for Tark cause the ICLA TEAM WAS BOUGHT AND PAID FOR AND WE ALLL KNOW IT, but tark got shit for his ways. Such BS! If tark wa allowed to coach and and not defend himself 24/7, he woulda won 2-3-4 titles

pretty funny to ask Tark about his possibly dubious recruiting, when you have UCLA right there with all of the great players they just happened to get year after year, and we all know now and probably did back then, how they were getting them with money from boosters.

@@FranklinSpicer -- thanks for your kindness. We won the trophy each year of my four-year career. Didn't lose to U of Idaho or Boise State for that matter. ISU was a football and basketball powerhouse in those years. Money then funneled to BSU in football; more toward UoI for basketball.

4 of these Idaho State players were eventual NBA draft picks...but only 3 3nded up being NBA players.

UCLA made some big shots at the end but Idaho made their free throws.I missed this one ,back then just a few of the tourneys games were on TV.

UCLA missed a whole bunch of shots in the first 10 minutes of the game, I believe this cost them the game.

I put this on Gig Simms, who never developed and sat end of his Sr year by Larry Brown; and Sr players must start Wooden mentality with shorty 5'11 Jimmy Spillane. Brad Holland was a better player.

Gig Sims was very athletic, a good defensive player, but had to play for 3 different coaches in 4 years. In the 1980 Final Four, he came in and blocked 2 of Purdue's Joe Barry Carroll's shots in a 30 second span. Sims went to star for 12 years in Italy.
