    Many people mentioned that in the Model 3 vs ID4 tests, the ID4 didn't go to the same starting position. My only explanation to that is that I didn't keep 100 % full left turn with ID4 all the time. A small mistake by me then. I think it did go to the exact position on the 1st test vs the e-Up.

    Your very naïve. You should worry about gasoline emissions which are far more dangerous because their particules are much much smaller than the one for diesel cars and can therefore get much deaper in you lungs and potentially into you blood. By the way don’t believe that other car makers did not twist their emission results. They were just lucky not being taken.

    Tight turning radius and round steering wheel, these are things that makes a daily a joy to use in tight city streets, something Tesla doesn't get...... Oh and the ability to go from drive to reverse and back to drive again quickly when you're trying to do U turns.

  • @Frank71

    @Frank71

    3 жыл бұрын

    U turns arn't the issues, you can go around block In place of a u turn. Tight turning radius is more important in backing a trailer or backing a long vehicle...Semi truck or a coach bus. A Car not really. That car is so small, you not need to cut the wheel as much as the the larger VW to turn the same. It's counter intuitive, but it makes sense. that row of single car garage behind him. Be easier to park a trailer in those garage spots with the ID4 without pulling forward and a smaller car but does not cut the tires as well

    Great test! Correct me if I'm wrong, i'm a noob: i feel like another disavantage of FWD is that when accelerating hard you have less adherance, even with pretty good tires (exemple e208 with Primacy 4)

  • @MarwanRashad

    @MarwanRashad

    3 жыл бұрын

    That is true. Very generally speaking almost all FWD cars with decent power will spin the front wheels when accelerating hard from standstill. This is due to the fact that the weight of the car shifts backwards to the back wheels when accelerating, reducing the pressure on the front wheels and therefore causing the front tires to lose grip.

    Very cool comparison. My first car was a Volvo 240 station wagon that I inherited from my dad, it had the craziest turning circle for a huge long car (RWD), and I feel this has been a neglected point ever since. Especially my first Model S was super disappointing in 2014, it was a RWD too, so no reason not to give some proper turning angle. Just, probably, Americans have lots of space so this is not on their radar. AWD or FWD cars can use the excuse that the drive shaft joints can't handle more angle, but I'm sure it can be done if the manufacturers are willing. It's such an important feature to the car's nimbleness and practicality, when parking, turning and many other manouvers. Kudos to VW for putting effort into this, and well done Harald for making a point of it. (Also very cool to see Bjørn sparring with top level executives!)

    A short turning radius is a big deal in crowded cities like San Francisco and much of urban Europe, as is the length of the car, both in parallel parking and as store parking lots are restriped to narrower parking. A wider track and shorter front-rear wheelbase allows tighter turning, as also does the max angle of the front wheels. One downside is that a shorter wheelbase, as in small 4WD (Jeep Wrangler, Suzuki Samarai), gives a more rocking-horse ride on interstates. A few cars had rear wheels which turned a bit, to allow both tighter turns and crabbing sideways at higher speeds, but seem to have disappeared, probably because the added complexity and cost wasn't worth the slight value.

    I noticed that too ! If I had to take a gues I would say it is because at those crazy wheel angles the lateral slippage of the wheels is severe because of a large deviation from the ideal turning angle due to the imperfect (non linear) steering mechanism

    Please try to recreate this test when you review the 4wd variant. Additionally, it seems to me that the second motor is the fly in the ointment (efficiency-wise) for all legacy auto EVs; EQC, eTron, iPace, plus the Polestar. Perhaps this is why the Koreans make efficient EVs. I guess the Taycan 4S is the only outlier in AWD efficiency.

    ICE cars do have a big fat engine and transmission, that is correct! RWD lacks the need for a CV - constant velocity - joint that is required for any front wheel drive vehicle. By the way, check out the turning circle of the Smart EQ - short wheelbase and RWD - it is less than 23' / 6.95m!
