Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 1st Edition is bringing electric cars to the masses. But can this crossover do "crossover" things? We have a complete look, then we drive it on our forest trail to see just how well this electric can handle light trail duty.

One of the best all around, logic reviews on the ID.4. I bought an identical one about 3 weeks ago. Honestly, the off-road portion of the video convinced me AWD isn’t necessary for standard driving and minimal off road needs. Nice job!

I have owned my ID4 for two-months and it’s back to service again! VW has changed my screen (Head Unit) three times and still it keeps going dark while driving. Also, the Car-Net app is useless only three functions, ( Battery Level, Car Climate, & Charging Stations). Some of the positive things are the seats are very comfortable, very quite, power is okay, panoramic roof with cover, three-years of free Electrify America charging, and the turning radius awesome! Lastly, they are not all sold out, some people did preorder them, but many are sitting on dealers lots. Negotiate for a fair price!

As @Blake stated, the ID.4 has "lane centering" with ACC, just that VW calls it "Drive Assist;" it is available on all 2021 ID.4s, regardless of trim level. You just had to push the "button" for "Travel Assist" (icon looks like a car) on the steering wheel.

As a new ID.4 driver I think you gave a fair assessment but you did miss a few things as the car has a steep learning curve. It does have lane centering but its called "travel assist". Press the lower right button on the left side of the steering wheel to activate. You can drive hands free if the car senses lanes for awhile then touch the wheel to let it know you are there occasionally. One other misunderstanding is when you questioned why you would want a sport mode for adaptive cruise control. In sport mode it sets your adaptive distance more aggressive. Not as important but the left button at 8:28 is not the "main" menu but the "park" menu. You did get lucky with the voice commands and the navigation, they are both pretty dismal. As far as I know, there are not tire pressure sensors, from what I've read it reads differences in tire sizes to sense a low pressure tire.

  • @nissetuta

Considering the wheel size this car is very powerful and by the results much better than many four wheel drives! Impressive test results. Soon the 4WD is here and that will be a true revolution I think:). Thank you for testning and for sharing:).

All terrains on smaller wheels with more sidewall, that thing would have eaten that hill. The ability to have full torque from zero rpm can't be understated for off-road. The ID 4 that ran the NORRA event wasn't that extensively modified. Safety equipment, suspension, a few cooling tweaks. Electric will dominate off-road (and everything else) in time.

Great review Ryan. 1:14 LOL. The MY frunk full of stuff adds extra weight ahead of the front axle. That makes the MY an understeer handling vehicle. While the frunkless no extra weight in the nose gives the ID.4 RWD handling vehicle. 8:11 Move on, iPhone, iPad, android all have no buttons. If it's okay for Tesla to have no buttons on their tablet display, it should be okay with the ID.4. You forget to mention that ID.4 has a smaller turning diameter of 33.5 ft. vs MY 39.8 ft vs Mach-E 38.1 ft. That's a gargantuan difference of 6.3 ft. and 4.6 ft. of the MY and Mach-e respectively. And the ID.4 short front and rear overhang vs the other two.

Excellent review, Ryan. I always get a personal kick from your reviews since I'm familiar with the roads east of Seattle that constitute your test environment. It's one of the main reasons I live in the gorgeous Pacific Northwest. As far as the ID.4 is concerned I've already seen a few "in the wild" around the Puget Sound area and my local VW dealer has a substantial waiting list. The remaining barriers to consumer adoption of EVs are rapidly coming down as charging availability and range improve. Vehicles like the ID.4, the products from Korean automakers, and the F150 Lightning are potential game changers. The proportion of EVs among new vehicles is still tiny. ICE vehicles won't disappear anytime soon. But for those skeptical about the future it's worth noting that in 1900 the vast majority of vehicles were dependent on live "horse power." Within 20 years horses were no longer the dominant means of transportation; they had become pets or the objects of gambling at race tracks.

I have property in the NW (Point Roberts) and would not be found dead in the ID 4. His concern for puncturing the underside given the flammability of the battery packs in EVs is legit. No spare is a non-starter and unacceptable in a city car - much less anything you might take to the boonies. I may have to keep my Outback XT Onyx until the wheels fall off, but no.

@@DavGreg If your point of view is based, at least in part, on your location in Point Roberts, I can understand your perspective. But Ryan's reviews are somewhat unique in their focus on off-road use, a mission for which the ID.4 isn't designed. As my daddy used to say about dogs dancing, "You don't ask how well they do it. It's amazing that they do it at all." BTW, are you able to get in and out of Point Roberts in the age of COVID and Canadian prohibition of Americans crossing the border?

Adaptive cruise modes like sport and comfort are essential. I have a 2019 honda crv. When a car cuts me off, crv reduces the speed but after when the road clears up, crv starts to speed up almost at full throttle to catch the speed i set. Which is annoying. My Mazda is somewhere between full throttle and smooth acceleration depending on the difference in speed and clearance ahead. However I would like a more aggressive setting as it's too relaxed for rush hour commute. People getting irritated behind you because you are leaving a sizeable gap when getting back up to speed or in stop and go traffic it takes forever to get back up to cruising speed while the guy in front is long gone. Then because of that gap people cut you off or merge infront.

I think the Tesla disclaimer at the beginning is spot on and somehow a lot of people can't get their head around that there are people not attracted by raw acceleration or car as a gadget...

I know most will disagree but I think VW will wipe the floor with Tesla within three to five years. VW electric future is very strong and build quality is a major factor for success and price. VW can drop prices to get marketshare. And they have Audi and Porche etc that uses the same platform and they will speed up charging infrastructure. A little late to the game but a very strong and a very Green future. Time to invest in VW!?

VW in Europe has an agreement with battery manufacturer Northvolt in Sweden that is worth SEK 120 billion. VW has thus secured access to batteries for the next ten years.

I think the white interior is interesting and different, and that the autostart is annoying. So, different minds. How are breaks set up in electric cars? Were they affected by splashing through those big washouts?

VW's biggest flaw is to give you hard plastic door panels (top half is bare minimum to make soft-ish) and ask 45k for a car...

I also think the Tirepressure thing only checks if all wheels spin at the same speed/frequency to detect if one is off, meaning it's lost some air

I have a 2021 dual motor model 3. I did get stuck in my driveway with over a 8 inches of snow. I was looking at the model y but the interior creaks and rattles are pretty bad. I’m just waiting for the awd id4 so I can get that. Still never getting rid of the Tesla. But I feel like the vw will be built better and I’m biased.

12:23 -- and this is why I will probably opt for a different EV (even though I love my e-Golf and was interested in ID.4 since ID.3 is not coming to N. America). Are you absolutely sure that stronger regenerative braking is not user-selectable though (I'm always a bit leery of non-EV cognizant reviewers). If anyone knows, please drop a reply here, thanks!

I drive long distances almost every day in the winter in mountainous rural areas. 250 mi. range will not cut it. When I can get legit actual 350 mi. range in very cold (Zero degrees Fahrenheit) weather I will be ready. But I fear this is pretty far off, and will end up costing $100K.

That TPMS is gonna drive me crazy. I'm the king of flats and it gives some extra assurance my mind isn't thinking there's a slow leak.. guess they're taking the software from Audi into this where it just lets you know if its flat or not.

VW TPMS just tells you if there is a loss of pressure - that is nothing new for them. The 2019 Mk 7.5 Golf Alltrack I used to own had the same kind of system. It is based upon the rotation of the wheels instead of using sensors.

Why not auto start with the break peddle. First if the car is open and a child climbs in , if the key fob is in range, the kid can accidentally activate the car to horrible consequences. Second theft, say you get out while to pick something up , whist the fob is in range , it doesn’t stop anyone from jumping in and driving away , the. Fob is not needed once activated and doesn’t auto shut down if out of range . This is why users should be able to disable the auto start seat sensors well as adding a pin to start on the touchscreen, Lao when trying to look out the back when parking, if your short, and lift out of the seat to see 3/4 and rear , the car shuts down. This is a fundamental flaw that has to be addressed
