ICL vs LASIK - eye surgeon explains what are the differences and which one is right for you?

#draudreytai, #ICL #VisianICL #ICL surgery
ICL surgery is a type of refractive surgery (like LASIK surgery) to correct nearsightedness (myopia) and astigmatism, to help improve vision and eliminate glasses and contact lenses. In the US, Visian ICL is the only type of ICL lens approved by the FDA for correction of myopia and astigmatism.
ICL lens stands for Intraocular Collamer Lens or Implantable Contact Lens.
Visian ICL lens was approved by the FDA in 2005, and the astigmatism correction version of Toric Visian ICL lens was approved in 2018. By 2019, over 1 million Visian ICL lenses have been implanted worldwide.
In this video, I review the following aspects of ICL surgery:
Mechanisms of action of Visian ICL lens for vision correction;
ICL surgery steps overview;
The differences between ICL surgery and LASIK surgery;
Screening criteria for ICL surgery;
Potential risks of ICL surgery.
If you are considering getting refractive surgery or have already had refractive surgery, which type of refractive surgery did you choose - ICL surgery or LASIK surgery? I’d love to hear your choice and your experience in the comments below👇.

    i have very bad vision. about -16 on my left eye, and -18 on my right. my right eye has also been a lazy eye ever since i was a child, causing me to have a slight case of strabismus and nystagmus there. the nystagmus usually only happens when i close my left eye though. anyway, i've been considering ICL recently and consulted with a few clinics. one clinic is willing to take me in for an examination, but the other clinic outright refused to even examine me simply because i told them i have nystagmus in one eye. apparently they said there's too high a risk of something going wrong if the eye keeps moving even slightly.

    @@rainbow20112011It does. In fact in EU many experts perform around 3-4 hours worth of tests on the eye before calculating the exact size, position and strength of the lens. It will correct the combined aberrations of the eye more precisely than any laser could (because it doesn’t rely on any healing distortions). It is much more complicated than just a bare prescription and a formula. Or at least I hope for you that it is the case for the place where you want to do the procedure.

    Sorry I can’t give individualized medical advice on this platform without eye exams. But in general, in the US ICL corrects myopia up to 15D fully and partially up to 20D. There are special considerations for cataract sugery for very high myopia, such as increased risk of retina detachment. It is important to have a detailed discussion with your surgeon about your case specifically. I hope this helps.

    I dated an emergency medicine resident and I was talking to her about glasses and surgery and she told me that she doesn’t know any ophthalmologist that get corrective eye surgery…?

    This is a myth. They have the biggest rates of corrective surgeries of any population size. In fact those that have indeed experience with corrective surgeries - perform them on themselves aswell after seeing the great effects. Those that are working for/with opticians ofc don’t have any incentives.

    @@MetallicReg oh yeah…? care to share any of your evidence that you conspicuously don’t include… i’m going to believe it’s a myth because somebody on the Internet says so.. also, how would they perform it on themselves… Have you ever even had the surgery? It’s impossible to perform it on yourself…

    Can I have the the ICL surgery if I have nystagmus symptoms?

    Thank you for the question. In general, nystagmus is not a contraindication for ICL sugery, but there are many anatomical criteria for one to be a candidate for ICL. I’d recommend you see an ICL surgeon for a consultation for your eyes.
