20/3 Update : To my and I guess everyone's surprise, the volcano is still alive. Divided into few growing craters producing stable amount of lava. Some gas pollution can be expected in the surrounding areas.

Great video, thanks for the update, fascinating and scary to see these great nature powers at work. Stay safe my friend 🧡

Thank you Lars! Fascinating indeed. And so is all the work Icelanders keep doing with the barriers now to protect the lagoon, town and powerplant 🔥

18/3 Update : The lava flow slowed down, but the eruption still continues in about 500m long crater row which has grown in height since yesterday.

Always great to follow your updates, Jan. No scare-mongering but down-to-earth honest advice. But DO agree that the way Blue Lagoon situation/visits have been handled are totally irresponsible. I live in London & fell in love with Iceland on a photo-trip 2 years ago. Hoping to go again sometime in future.

Thank you Renate! Honestly I am curious to see if there'll be any comments on this in the news. I might do a deep dive into this topic, but will have to figure out the way to approach it as like with everything where there is too much money involved it is a touchy subject. I hope you will soon get to travel back for another Iceland road trip :)

Nice video Jan. hopefully things settle down for a while. I’m heading out in April to get some drone footage in and around Kef. Good health.

Thank you! I hope you will get some great shots! Let’s see maybe the eruption still continues and you will be able to get closer with the drone 🔥

Hi Jan. Looks like you missed something tonight!? The road to BL and Grindavík is already toast since 1:00am! Anyway, thanks for your update... Cheers...

Hey Pete! I did. I had a voiceover ready and then added a subtitles over the footage where lava crosses the road to correct it, but I uploaded the wrong file without the corrective subts. Thanks for letting me know i will have to be more careful next time!

Hi Jan, thanks for this video of the newest Volcano eruption. It sure looked beatiful with the darkness of night and the hot Volcano Lava flow. It is nice to see on video but it would not be fun to be there in the middle of it. Looks like the snow is still falling there at the filming of this video. Take care Jan until next time.

Hello Ben, it looks magnificent but like you say I wouldn't want to be in the middle of it! Huge respect to everyone working next to the fresh lava building the defence walls and so on. And yes we have a full on winter here still in north of Iceland, in the south on the other hand it looked like spring just few days ago. So different, just couple hundred kms away.

I absolutely agree 100% about the BL, I’m so anti them🤨 playing with ‘stupid’ people’s lives 🤬 on the bright side, it in no way puts me off a return trip which hopefully with be Sept/Oct this year. I’m planning a longer stay with time included for the North. I see it was snowing quite a bit from your view 😊

I am a bit surprised that not many people spoke about it, even though I feel like everyone was thinking the same. Well, good thing everything worked out this time, but still it feels like a gamble to me. Other than that I am happy to hear you're planning a trip back to Iceland :) It is a great time of the year for northern lights and I love the orange colour of the landscape (you may have seen that in some of my previous videos about sep/oct)

Hey Jan, I am planning a trip to Iceland probably sometime around May. I am staying far away from the Blue Lagoon because I don't really like crowds, but I also wouldn't want to stay there due to the proximity to the volcano. I am not entirely sure the staff would want to be there either to be honest. I think that the government opening the Blue Lagoon again when the volcanic hot spot has so far been unpredictable is bordering on negligence. I understand that there may be major economic impact if they close it for the summer peak months to survey the risk, but I think that the outcome where the lagoon is breached when people are staying there would not be good for the tourism industry of Iceland. I am hoping to see a volcano from a safe distance when I travel there, I just hope that whatever I see does no damage to peoples homes and lives.

Hey @atanjacket ! thank you for sharing! Yes, that's all exactly what I'm thinking. It seems to be something everybody knows and talks about yet not many people here seem to be really addressing it publicly. I guess that's what happens when there's a lot of money involved. It is a touchy subject. For now it seems there won't be any damage other than some infrastructure which shouldnt be difficult to repair. I'm excited for you coming here and I hope you'll be able to see the volcano and have a great trip here :)

Although lava might not get to the Blue Lagoon, it has affected the main road twice and this time with no warning- so this needs to be factored in for future plans.

Im very curious to hear what the authorities have to say after this blows over. The idea of having people in the area where eruption can occur with little to no warning seems a bit scary to me

I thought letting people stay at the Blue Lagoon was foolish. Volcanoes are unpredictable by nature, never a certainty. How people go there with the risk of being boiled alive is very strange. I’m not sure how the first Icelandic people decided this was a good place to live? Freezing cold, volcanoes, risk of losing your home and land. There must be something really good there.

  • @janiniceland

I believe that BL informed their guests regarding the potential eruption and gave them instructions how to evacuate quickly if that was to happen. I just don't think that everyone going there had the good understanding about how close and how uncertain things were. It is being now pointed out that building many towns in Iceland including the capital of Reykjavík near old lava or what we know used to be volcanicly active area perhaps wasn't very good idea. In regards why people live here, I completely understand. Pure beautiful nature, natural resources, clean , quiet and safe environment...there's a risk of loosing your home everywhere in the world : you have floods, earthquakes, wildfires, war, landslides, tornadoes, hurricanes....nothing is certain
