I've been doing that mistake of flicking with the extension and having more of an empty push. Always wanted to know how to correct it - thanks so much!

In ballet for the arms I got taught to imagine as if someone had tied a string to my middle finger and is gently pulling my arm forwards/sideways/upwards by it. 😊 It always worked for me! I now really have the feeling like there's a pull and yet I can equally relax into the hold of an invisible string.

That is a great way of thinking of arm movements. Your ballet training is very beneficial to helping you learn to ice skate.

2:06 One foot hockey stop, perfect form. Knees bent, lower torso leaned back, upper torso leaned forward, toes. knees, and hips all crosswise to direction of travel, head looking straight ahead in direction of travel. One foot off the ice and a nice slide. It looks so easy, but it eludes me.

This is exactly what I’m looking for! Glad I find your video. Other coaches on KZread don’t give any tips for how to improve forward skating but explain other fancy skills. Left my mind blank.

Wow, you're such an elegant skater. Even just your forward stroking looks so good. Thank you for pointing out common mistakes. I have seen so many people flicking up the back leg that I actually thought it was the proper way to do it. And I was copying the mistake 🤣🤣 Thankfully now I can fix it 🙏🏻

I am a beginner figure skater who has been skating for 2 months and even though I know how to do forward skating I want it to look smooth and not stiff and unnatural

Can't wait to practice this on my next session, thank you! I was wondering if you could cover Mohawk in one of your videos too. My coach (in group training) tells me to push my feet in the opposite direction towards the wall to get the 180 degrees. but it only hurts my knee. I know the turn in the ankles should come from hips but I don't see how this exercise can improve it without breaking my knees...

Thanks! We'll be uploading videos on Mohawks in the future, both inside and outside. That is one exercise you can do to try and open your feet more, but it is tough on the knees. There are others you can do that are potentially more comfortable for the knees that can also work on opening hips. Try an off ice “Frog Stretch” for instance.

I have skated for a while but am still a beginner (adult) n have not improved in my stroking. Seems that I get worse with more questions floating around my head! Hope. u can help answer some : With each push, I will tilt forward. Is it because my back is not strong enough to hold myself upright or ?? I don't have my arms in the "big position" but slightly lower. Does that impact anything or it's just esthetics? Holding arms so high up cause strain in my neck n shoulders in no time. Is that something that one will get used to eventually? When u push, is it to the side or diagonally? How to ensure leg is fully extended n straight? In my attempt to straighten, I ended up flicking the leg, just like what u said NOT to do! Lastly, where is the weight? Fully on pushing leg or only most of it? Say we push with right leg. The left leg glides forward because of the right leg push or we start to glide left foot forward while maintaining enough pressure in right foot to push off strongly? I am feeling a lot of empty pushes especially on my weaker side. Hope my questions make sense. As always, thank u so much for all the tutorials, they r of such excellent quality.

OK I watched your forward cross over video again n see that tilting forward n empty pushes are due to leaving my hips behind instead of right underneath. Am I right? It's hard to b pushing forward n yet not titling forward.

No you don't put weight on the pushing foot. All your weight is on the gliding foot, such that you can lift the pushing foot off the ice at the end if the stroke as shown here.

Distracting snare drums playing in the background. This is an instructional video - the only sound should be your voice.
