    I watched all the backward crossovers videos out there and find this one the most helpful. Showing the technique, pointers to get it right and mistakes to watch out for. I still have to lift my foot to cross over but my practises have improved so much. I feel closer to success! I also want to thank you for the Russian Stroking video at the Patreon page. Group lesson coach taught us that last week. My attempts were a mess until I found your video and watched it several times. When I next get on the ice, I nailed it! What joy! As a middle aged beginner, figure skating is challenging for me, even at basic levels, and your videos are so helpful. Thank you so much Lloyd for sharing your knowledge. Have a Merry Blessed Christmas & Happy New Year!

    Thank you very much for your kind words. I'm happy to hear the video has helped you improve your crossovers. Mastering keeping the crossing foot on the ice can take time, so don't be alarmed if it takes more practice! If you have any questions regarding this, feel free to ask. Also, thanks for giving me the feedback on the Russian Stroking exercise video. I wasn't sure if people had managed to find it on our Patreon page. Glad to hear it helped you out, its a great exercise to do on the ice. Thanks again for the kind words! Merry Christmas and have a happy new year too :)

    One question. After pushing under and uncrossing the leg. Where do I return the inside leg? Is it on outside or inside edge? I see a lot of skaters step to inside edge before pulling their foot onto outside edge and pushing under.

  • @IceCoachOnline

    @IceCoachOnline

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@samfromuk it can be done both ways to be honest. I like to teach it as stepping straight onto the outside edge in order to reinforce the idea that your weight needs to be over your feet at all times. You can do it stepping onto a slight inside edge and the rolling it to the outside edge, but then you run the risk of stepping too wide. This means that you your weight stuck between both feet and you have to now correct this before you can focus on getting a good strong push on the cross under. If you look at a high level skater, with exceptional skating skills like Stephane lambiel or Olivier schoenfelder, they will have their weight under themselves the whole time during their backward crossovers. To sum it up, I would recommend stepping straight onto the outside edge. You would never step wide onto the inside edge, then roll it over to the outside on forward crossovers, so why do it backwards?

    For the second push afte rthe pump, what is the direction of your push?

  • @janetslater129

    So what tips do you have with keeping the heel down as you cross on the backward crossover? This has become a very bad habit for me, especially with my left over right backward crossovers.

  • @janetslater129

    @janetslater129

    Clarification: I have the habit of letting my left foot come up more towards the toe as I’m crossing the foot over my right.

  • @IceCoachOnline

    @IceCoachOnline

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@janetslater129 I would say this can be two things: If your weight is correctly over your right foot, but the left toe pick is lightly scratching the ice as you move it, since there is not a issue of weight placement you should simple flex your left foot a bit as you go to move it, this will lift the toe off the ice. If the weight is heavily on the left foot and grinding on the toe during the cross, my guess (without seeing it for myself) is that you did not fully commit your weight to the right foot during the first push. So your hips will be back, shoulder too far forwards and your weight is in-between both feet. This makes you transfer straight into the toe of left foot. If this is the case, go back and work on backward pumps and backward chasses to get the feel of correct weight placement in the first push. Once this is fixed, the crossover should improve. Hope this helps!

    Thanks for the video, I always thought I knew how to do a backward crossover, now I feel I need hella practice. Just one question: Some people in my class who are not comfortable with lifting the leg, do the crossover like the "last mistake" shown in the video except that they don't do full swizzle. They correctly do backward pumping and shift the legs without lifting from the ice. The teacher approves. Is that another way of backward crossover? If yes, can you have a small video briefly discussing that type too? I can do that with my strong leg, but with the weaker, it looks impossible... As always, thanks for the videos! This is the best skating channel and I am always practicing with your videos!

    Happy to hear you enjoyed the video! So in regards to the people in your class keeping both feet on the ice, this isn’t necessarily a mistake but it depends how they are doing it. My example was to point out that starting with two inside edges then pulling them into the cross is wrong. It’s hard to say without seeing the people in your class, but often I see beginners leave their weight on the outside foot (1st pushing foot) and do not transfer to the inside foot for the second part of the cross. So essentially the weight stays predominantly on the outside foot, which is a mistake. In my video, I teach it the way I do to try and avoid this becoming a habit early on. You can leave they foot on the ice the whole time during the crossover. This is not a mistake. If you go to 2 : 4 1 of the following video you can see my full speed crossovers: kzread.info/dash/bejne/o4BkmqppqZPbg5M.html Ideally I would be a little more upright, but I have injuries in this video! As you can see though both my partner and I keep both feet on the ice the whole time. Your suggestion for a video explaining this is a good one and I will add it to the list. - Lloyd

    i still have questions on the second push: when you push with you outside mid-to-forward blade there, which direction are you pushing you foot to? My coach keeps saying it's an extension and I don't know if I should extend side ways or more side and front. and how to get that let staying on ice as long as possible? when you are pushing with that second part, which part of the blade is the other foot (the final foot on the ice)?

  • @MikeO89

    @MikeO89

    Жыл бұрын

    more side front. pushing to the side helps with the depth of the edge and pushing to the front helps with the speed. there is a sweet spot at each speed and radius of your circle that gets more intuitive over time
