This entire video, and your answer to the weighing of fish comment is precisely why you're the man in this field on this medium. Class. Been a fan a lot of years now, but now it becomes apparent every video I become a deeper admirer to a deep and humble mentor! Wish my buddy and I luck on another spell of tangos with dinos from the depths!

Another quality production from Clayton Schick Outdoors, but of course, he's Clayton Schick. I really appreciate how you handle the fish you plan on returning. I appreciate your discussions, over the course of your videos, about handling fish in freezing air conditions and using the right gear to land and not exhaust the fish. The best thing is you're not scared to use a barbless hook💪 👊. Around here those big girls you're releasing could be 30-40 years old. You're a great teacher and steward of your passion. Keep it up! BTW, nice fish too! I'm jealous down here on the southern edge of the ice belt.

I carry a decender on all my laker trips for the sake of the fish. Very important. Only need it once every couple years, but it's saved a few 30 pound fish. P.S. Terrific video as usual. Loved what you said about being open to learning new things.

Clayton, your recent information about trout not burping helped save 3 lakers in the last couple outings. One of which was a really bad situation. The irony is crazy. Been fishing lakers for over 25yrs and have never encountered one that didn’t burp until this week. They came up with a mouth full of burbot, quick reaction to remove the lodged meal followed by massaging till she puked all over the ice with some nice burps for her to be released back down to the depth’s. now as much as you didn’t give out much info on the what to do in this scenario, having the bit of info you gave fresh in mind made the emergency revival that much more quicker for us to get her back safely instead of just laughing at the fact we caught a hungry trout with a burbot in her mouth. As much as you think you’re getting repetitive in your videos, which you sometimes are, the fresh information or refreshers help many of us more than you think. I can honestly say without a doubt you helped save a beautiful 31.75” chunky laker. And I can’t thank you enough for that.

I like your thoughts on weighing and measuring fish. It's pretty easy to get a quick pic and measurement of a nice fish, but the extra time it takes to weigh could make a difference as to the health of the fish when it's released.

every try boiling lakers? Had to do it once when cooking in the pouring rain in the BWCA and couldn't keep a fire going. Now, when fishing for trout, we always have one dinner boiled. Cut into small cubes, they boil very quickly and sprinkel some Lawrys salt. Fantastic!! It's a big deal on the south shore of Lake Superior. My wife grew up attending lake trout boils (HUGE kettels, under a fire, with potatoes, carrots and onions all cooking together).

I caught a decent Laker around 16 lbs many years ago that would not burp. I couldn’t get it back down after many tries. I ended up putting it in my livewell and used a syringe to vent it like you can do for bass. I hated doing this but it was my only option. It did swim down after but I am still not keen on venting. So glad this has only ever happened once

Not a question but a livescope tip if you're interested Clayton... take your depth off auto and adjust manually when you're ice fishing. You're losing about ⅓ of your screen in this video at that 70ft depth. Get that bottom as close as you can to your bottom adjustment buttons. Thank me later.

Hi, just curious ive fished lakers for many years in the apostle islands, and you fish mostly what i think of as whitefish, splake, browns depths, i like 200-250 feet i never target them in less than 125-150 feet. Never caught i big one yet, lots of nice ones. Most times they don't have a problem swimming back, just if its small take a bit more time bringing them up. Is this in your opinion killing many of the fish, most people here think they live and id agree if you take time on the small ones, some you cant keep too small 13,14 inch, but they are not bloated if you slow down bringing them up.
