IBM Selectric Typewriter Return Tab Cord Cable Repair Winding Main Spring

This 13" IBM selectric 1 with Blue/Blue key-tops broke the transport tension pulley & all the cords came off. New pulley video on a different IBM (red) is on my channel too. This is the unofficial way to do this, I was taught by the best, the IBM way & somehow I found my own method. Most typewriter technicians can do this, it's definitely not as complicated as a center pulley/hub replacement.

Hello Phoenix Typewriter - Duane, you really do a great job. As soon as it is possible, please, post a presentation about exchanging the Tilt & Rotate tapes at Selectrics II. This is some frightening job for the owner of these machines. A training video about this is missing among the most expectable videos on KZread

Been waiting for a broken machine to come thru shop to do that. Probably will do it soon as I get some time with or without broken selectric

Many years ago my IBM tech told me, that the operational shaft noises from my IBM Memory 50 Typewriter could be cured by replacing the bushings, but after only a few years they would again become noisy.

Great video as always! Can I ask what type of lube you use on these and the manual machines? Have thought about using synthetic non mineral oil with PTFR pr maybe lock oil as to minimise residue and gumming up, would thos type of lubes suffice? Thx in advance!

Do you have a video on how to thread the other cord in the Selectric II? and what is the technical name for the other cord? On my machine the white plastic tension pulley broke and both cords fell off the machine and the tab cord ended up jamming in between the white and metal gears

Tab cord is the cord that goes around the spring pulley on right & attached to drum in front. Return cord/cable attaches below carrier & heads towards stationary pulleys on left & then back side to rear drum. Yes the return cord/cable is pre attached but takes a direct pathway around pulleys to drum. I don't have any other videos about tab/rtn cords.

Yup I have done it the IBM way, Done it the way my ex-business partner did it (close to IBM way) And then there is my way. . . . . My rotate band replacement is unconventional too . . .

Phoenix Typewriter, just wondering.. When you say the pulley broke (0:20/17:14), I noticed there is a little metal bracket there with a thick U-shaped spring. Well, my Selectric II has a white plastic bracket and it is broken. I found the spring in the bottom of the case. When I turn on the carriage constantly pulls to the right. Will replacing the bracket and spring fix it or will it also need adjusting?

Missed this comment somehow, original pulleys were plastic & will eventually break. If cord don't come off you can just replace pulley, if not, you would need to go thru the whole process. See this video for just pulley replacement kzread.info/dash/bejne/gKKrqqqLZ8_UgqQ.html

To add to this, you could get replacement plastic pullies or metal ones like this. The replacement plastic ones were guaranteed to break again eventually as they wear thinner and thinner unlike the metal one. The metal ones were more expensive though.

neat. Mine has a tab that operates normally most of the time, but sometimes stalls once past the halfway point. I thought the ballassembly was hitting the black safety covers below, so I removed them, but it still stalls even with no clear interference. Wonder what causes that...

Simply push either margin arm to the left as if the carriage had finished it's return.

Wasn't so sure this was going to be a survivor, looked rough, in that case I was going to transfer keytops to a selectric 2, but after I got pulley & cords installed & got to run the typewriter thru it's paces, It seems to be strong & after some more basic maintenance, I'm pretty confident it's gonna last a while. But It has been Pre-sold to an enthusiast who is a member of ATC. Looking at getting the ugly green case powder-coated.

How do you determine whether a machine is salvageable or not, and where do you even begin? Just got a selectric I and finally got the shaft turning but there are many problems left to sort out... Thanks for the videos, they are helping a lot!
