Good discussions from your channel so far. I'm starting off via IBEW's training program and hope to add some insights later down the road as well.

I've been an Electrician now for 38 years, both working for non union companies and later self employed. If I could go back in time, I would definitely would of tried to join the IBEW. It is difficult paying for your own Healthcare, and no pension at all.

  • @Leggir

Pensions are great, as long as they stay (Think of Sears, UAW plants shutting, etc.) Keeping a tight lid on spending, not buying into new vehicles and extravagant housing, and paying yourself 10% / paycheck to go into your retirement is the best way to plan for retirement. I know a few union guys who worked well into retirement because they had poor spending habits, despite making 6 figure incomes for years.

IBEW Local 5, Pittsburgh here. I’m going into my 5th year as an apprentice. I take my Journeyman’s test next year. I worked in 2 sewage plants, a couple water plants, 4 hospitals and a ground up healthcare office building. Monday I start at a oil and gas field job not sure what’s going on there yet. One thing I can say where I live as a non union electrician the hourly definitely less than Union. They probably make decent money if self-employed. I’m not sure what the benefits are like. Our local has two pensions and a401(k) for lack of better words. The pay hourly is like one and ahalf times what a non-union electrician would make. Plus with the union there’s more job security. Granted, there may be times where layoffs could have a guy sitting for months depending on how work is. Thanks for the video stay strong in the trade

Good and fair post. I'm a self employed industrial electrician. I tried years ago to start my own business in upstate NY. The unions made it impossible to do that without paying them. I moved to Florida which is a right to work state and started my business repairing welding machines with no interference from the state govt or the union. 15 yrs later I make 200 per hour and I never looked back. Point is location has a lot to do with that choice

well, I see you must be somewhat new to the union, or have been involved for a short period of time. I started with non union myself, get into my local here in KC. I can't tell you how incorrect you are about getting more experience in non union doing can lights and small tenant finishes, residential, a chucky cheese and a jimmy johns. Ive been in the local for 3 years now and have done nothing but massive commercial industrial jobs. The Cerner Trail campus, hospitals, Arrowhead and Koffman stadiums, GM an FORD plants. Power plants. dude here in the IBEW we do bigger things than can lights and wire up chucky cheeses brother and I'm hoping you will get to experience this in time since you are new to the union. I was completely stunned with how much bigger and better the work is on the union side. I think you'll find that you will change your mind on that statement. It also helps that I'm with one of the 3 biggest contractors in my city MOE KCMO. I've learned more in 3 years of union that my whole time non union. you don't get a lot of bending 4-6 inch RIGID in non union and the job sizes are often a lot smaller. and the schooling at the IBEW is top notch if you don't fuck it off and want to learn.

  • @S33Electrical

    @S33Electrical

+roborobinson11 It's a good trade for sure, and the pay is good. Almost everyone has to make a choice about what career they want to pursue in life. It's a important choice, and because of your age what you spend the next 6-7 years doing will determine what the rest of life will be like. At your age you'll want to work just as hard on yourself as you do on the job. Make good choices, stay away from tobacco, drugs, and alcohol. I've met people in the electrical field that are highly intelligent, and well rounded people. I've also met total losers that have never hit a lick in their life. I think that going into the electrical field couldn't hurt to at least try it out. If it's not what you want, you'll know right away. Personally I can't work a regular 9-5 job where its is a day in and day out routine. I'm somewhat eccentric, I get bored of routines, and mundane tasks. Being in the electrical field allows me to constantly learn, and experience new things. After years of hard work I'm flexible, and I can conduct my business on my own terms. That's what I wanted, and that's the life I've set up for myself. My walk is going to be different from yours, so you'll have to make your own choice. I have it in to me to fight, and it's that strength that has carried me threw my whole journey.

Up until a year ago I've always thought I wanted to stay in retail. I'm interested in becoming an electrician because it's a good trade and as far as I can tell if I do a good job I'll always be employed. I don't really work with tools or am a handyman as I've stated I've spent my years in retail so with that being said do you think employers would shy away from me being that I have no type of experience? We don't really have alot of union in the dfw area so I can speak as to if it's better or worse. I do know that in my time as an electrician and under my current boss I have been exposed to just about everything and have learned to adapt very well. I went to a trade school for 8 months that certifies me for 2 years Electrical experience in my state (NY) and I've always been working in the field now for the past 7 months straight. I feel like I know the majority of Residential. I'm completely confident that I can wire entire apartments/buildings by myself from Rough-ins/Panel/Devices. I started at a low wage of $10/HR now I technically get 11$/HR .. 1$ off the books to balance what they take out for taxes. But Helpers in New York with 0 Experience generally start at 12-14$ and I went to school and still started at $10.. Regardless it's been 7 months in the field on top of school and I think that my productivity/knowledge is worth more than what i'm getting paid is it time to ask for a raise? And If they say no should I go to another company or should I just stick this out 5 months to get 1 year experience?

  • @S33Electrical

I feel like it takes 4-5 years for someone to really get well rounded in experience, so that's something to consider. I'd say learn how to write a nice resume that you can send via e-mail. Reply to ads with it, and see what kinda opportunities come from it. If you get a serious offer, and you use that as leverage when you go to ask for a raise with the company you're at. Good luck.

I've been a union electrician for 25 years now. There's no doubt about it, that from a personal perspective, anyone interested in electrical work is VASTLY better off doing union work. Also, more importantly, labor unions have been, and still are, hugely important in establishing labor standards, wages, and working conditions in this country. So the ethical, moral and RIGHT choice is to go union, if you have any choice about it. Union members pay dues, and those dues pay not only for benefits to union members, but also for benefits to non-union members. So please, if you can, work UNION, hire UNION, and support unions in every way, electrical or whatever.

That may well be true in New Jersey. I live in California. If you google "IBEW New Jersey" you should find a few phone numbers. Call them and ask about apprenticeship programs, if you haven't already. Or, you could move to some other part of the country. After a five year apprenticeship, you're free to travel and work in other locals, retaining all your benefits. Also, you don't have to fixate on the electrical trade. Other related trades have union apprenticeships also, like HVAC.

Im an lu80 apprentice and as soon as i get my hands on that card 5 years in I’m dragging and working for myself I know to many master electricians working well past retirement age because they didn’t take the time to grow a business, and have a large asset they can sell so they have a big ole nest egg too lay on.

Depends on many things really. Local 424, no one has worked more than a few months without layoff to cycle members through work. Also pension is based off like anything, continued success of the company or union, which ours has been struggling for 5+ years. Wage when working is good, but at 700-800 hours per year, has meant overall yearly income is pretty shitty. Having worked both, I respect both, but for me the 'infighting' and political interference with members turned me off. "We don't talk to other trades." "We don't talk to non-union." We don't... "" You'd better vote for... ". I just want to go to work, earn a good wage, work hard at work worth doing, and go home.

non union is shit, compared to union, for the most part, only a few non-union shops. And at 3:50 what he says is true, non union equals no safety or work protocal, or mentors to work with you for a few weeks, so you feel comfortable. The non-union shops care less about safety, i just finished trade school, and on day one the guy tells me to climb a 12 foot ladder and use a circular saw, and cut out pieces that are drawn for the race way., then bang the pieces out with a chesel and hammer. Then he says, so what can you do? i told him i can install lights receptackle, gfci protection devices, install smoke detectors, he says thats it. And then says im not doing anything, but standing around. Im new and the foreman expects me to do random stuff with no direction. Then he says looks like that trade school didn't teach me shit. i asked the other helpers how long they have been with the company, turns out one has worked with them for 4 weeks the other guy 2 months, aka the company has a high turn over rate. i expected them to have me do some tranining for a few days. I found it odd they hired me without a interview and i can see why. Left them and decided to interview with better non-union companies till i can get into the elevator union or electrical trades union.

You can take any type of call you want as a union electrician and do any type of electrical work you are looking for. There are residential, commercial, and industrial contractors in the union all over the country and they are all always gonna need help. learn more things in non union? are you serious bro? lol union is definitely the way to go . you get hands on experience in every part of the trade that can possibly be done. you can barely even find work without going through the union or the apprenticeship. well I'm talking about outside construction Lineman Substation Technicians and ground man. the safety is ridiculous if there is any problem my BA would stop that shit soon. I seen him kick a contractor out of our state and said you don't run indiana I do. lol and we was all working two days later for a contractor that wasn't trying to be ratty. the pay is crazy and benefits can't be matched like at all. I'm 19 years old I'm a apprentice lineman and on a 40 hour check plus per diem I'm bringing home 917 a week. and I'm just a first step. my dad is a journeyman lineman working in local 9 chicago and is bringing home like 2500 a week and benefits retirement. and when he gets tired of traveling and making money he will come home and work for 39 and change a hour and be home every night. here's the skinny, ive been doing this shit for 13, 14 years, he's right the union has more structure schooling is way more intensive and involved , for instance the union spends 6 months on theory alone and non union prob spend a month or two, non union you have to pay for insurance depending on what the company offers it can be sky high, but the union you have damn good insurance, dental, and vision thats all paid for, non union 99% of the time theres no retirement, union pays 3 bucks an hour twords your retirement at no cost to you, the non union is way more laid back most of the time you dont even have to finish school to get journeyman pay as long as you can talk your shit and prove you can do the work your in, i dropped out in my 3rd year and ive been a journeyman for 8, 9 years, if you pass all your schooling in the union and have OSHA 10, OSHA 30, firstaid, CPR certifications you can be classified as a JW which means no matter what country wide the union has to pay you 24.00 an hour at least for knoxville, (its different for every city which knoxville is one of the lowest), now if your a long time journeyman trying to get into the union (which i just recently did) you have to take 5 separate very difficult test to get your JW classification, you still get all the union benefits you just wont get top pay, but im still making more than what i was nonunion, i like how laid back nonunion was and im gonna miss all the guys i worked with but im chasing that top dollar and retirement, and i havent had insurance in like 2 years so its gonna be nice to have that

I don’t think I’d even be given a chance at JW unless I came in with my license, and then have to take a bunch of hard tests. But still, I’m way more leaning toward that than going in without my license and being forced to start at the bottom at an $8/hr pay cut.

Local 340! Go to a real JATC IBEW apprenticeship. You can NOT get that education anywhere else. During my apprenticeship, we were rotated to different contractors every year, for a more diverse hands on training. If you hit it off with a contractor, and they want you back, you can invoke a 5th year privilege, and transfer back to them. Both parties will be better off, after the apprentice has seen other ways of doing things. There's always gonna be guys out of work in my local, because they have been fired from every local contractor, and can only take calls from out of town employers, because they haven't burned them yet. I started my apprenticeship in 1997, and the only time I have taken off, was time that I asked for, to go on trips. Check the pension contributions, they change from local, to local. In Sacramento you get 5$ an hour put into your retirement. In San Francisco I think it's up to $17 an hour into your retirement. That's on top of your wages and Platinum medical, and dental. Some locals pay more working dues than others, but we ALL pay the National $36 a month, and receive a "Pension" for that on top of your retirement from the wage package at whatever local you work at, or travel to. I believe the National Pension is $32, or $33 a month for every year served/worked/dues payed. United we stand, Divided we beg.

with non-union you get less skilled workers, who do less quality work for less pay, and with less incentive to stay and grow with your company. If you do union more skilled workers, who are better payed and trained, you win more contracts, and workers are more likely to stay with your shop for years instead of a few weeks or months.

The union tactics for gaining membership are unbelievably unethical. There is a reason their membership is declining, even in the state of Oregon. According to the Department of Labor 86% of the contractors in the US are non-union, 14% are affiliated with a union. There is a reason for that. In Oregon according to BOLI, 70% non-union, 30% union. Every non-union contractor I know of offers 401k with matching. The union pension plan is a scam. They will make up every excuse in the world to not pay out the pension, and keep the money... this happens everyday.
