Ibanez PIA review part 2, things to look out for on the Ibanez PIA3761 (SDG)

Ibanez Pia review part 2, a follow up to the original PIA review, to give you my thoughts after playing the Ibanez PIA for a few months and seeing how it performs in day to day use.
This is the follow up to the detailed review and tests of the Ibanez PIA3761 SDG I did over a year ago. Here's the original video if you want to watch it;
• Ibanez Pia review, a d...
After seeing several reviews of the Ibanez Pia where the reviewer was just trying to show off and talk about themselves I decided to make a proper Ibanez pia review where the guitar is the star and I go through the Steve Vai signature Ibanez PIA3761 in detail looking at every component of the guitar. I review the Sun Dew Gold version of the Pia which is one of the limited edition first year coloured versions available. The review had an unhappy end, so it became necessary for me to make a second part to the video.
The Steve Vai signature series Ibanez Pia is the updated version of the Ibanez Jem 7V which was an excellent guitar. Because of the similarities in the Jem and the Pia I will be doing some comparisons between the 2 guitars using the Ibanez Jem as a base line. The Ibanez PIA3761 is an expensive guitar at over £3000 here in the UK, but you will have to decide if it's actually worth the money or not yourself. I have to point out that I have owned and used daily as a professional the Ibanez Jem 7V for over 15 years and it still looks great and plays great, the frets are just starting to ware out.

    White PIA 2022 owner - arrived flawless. Such an amazing instrument. The design allows for the use of every technique the modern guitar player could want. From bar flutters and dives to lighting fast legato and slow deliberate vibrato, it can all be done. The scalloped fretwork makes bends and overall clarity easy to obtain. The rounder neck profile (from the wizard style) allows me to grab my Strat right after putting the PIA down and I instantly feel comfortable on my Strat. The wizard necks are such a jump from any other that it is noticeable and requires some time for adjustment. I am completely shocked at how good an instrument Ibanez and Steve created. I expected a very good guitar but it has far exceeded every expectation. The craziest thing is that this seems to be the view of many other people as well - its not just a shredders guitar. It is thee Guitarists' Guitar.

    I can believe this cuz I bought one of the newer neck thru premiums but it came with a real Ibanez edge bridge and I wound up having to shim the saddles on the low and high e, b, a strings to get that perfect fast action without buzz. Awesome playing and sounding guitar and the fret work is as good as I’ve ever seen. Very resonant. It’s the rgt1220pb. The specs are off the chain… neck thru, stainless frets, Ibanez edge and ebony board. It came with the typical tonezone/air Norton pups but I just ordered utopia pups cuz I thought they’d look unreal on this guitar more than anything. Hope they sound how they look but the few reviews I’ve seen have been very good?!

    Indeed a proper review of the pia, part 2!! Well done 🤘🤘 Both videos very informative, thank you! Back in the day in 2005, I got the JS1000 over the Jem just like yours. There are days I regret not getting the Jem. (kind of a PTSD not getting a Jem since now with the pia, there is no Prestige made in Japan Jems) But with your two videos about the PIA and Jem, with the precise overview (like the fret heights, epic review detail), I am even more happier with my new made in japan RG550 Genesis Collection then I already was. Next guitar goal, pia in the new Blue Powder (or maybe Seafoam Green in the future)

    Strangely before I bought the JEM I wanted one of the Joe Satriani models but for some reason I didn't get one. I agree with you, it's a shame they've gone over to the JEM Premium because it just doesn't seem as good and the JEM was one of there biggest sellers. 😊😃

    My black PIA arrived today, and the neck was a little off on mine too. Not as severely as yours but still enough that I was grateful for this video - I followed your directions and now it's perfectly even on both sides. I didn't enjoy doing that on a very expensive new guitar, but at least it saved me from returning the thing! With the neck aligned properly I adjusted the bridge height and was good to go. The trem angle was already fine, so nothing to do there. Honestly the hardest part of the process today was removing the plastic from the pickguard. Those tiny pickup screws do like to hang on to that plastic.

    I know I'm late to the party but just wanted to say great part 2 of your original review! After owning a couple Pias, and a few Jems, for a while now, I can say that the Pia is a nice upgrade. The stainless steel frets alone are a great upgrade that was very welcome. One question I have is in playing both I've noticed another difference is the neck of the Pia feels thicker overall than the Jem. I don't have any tools on hand to do a precise measurement so I'm not totally sure if it's just my imagination, but I would guess a measurement from the bottom of the neck (where you might place your thumb) to the top of the fretboard would be greater on the Pia. Assuming I'm right about that, I slightly prefer the thinner Jem neck, but the difference is small enough to not be an issue.

My Green Pia had the same problem with the strings a little bit off. I noticed that after watching your vid and could so solve the problem. Hello, enjoyed your reviews. I just received the black Pia… it looks like I’ll need to move the neck slightly on this one too. But my main concern is the tremolo arm socket coming loose, did you ever fix this from the first video? From what I know, there’s supposed to be a nut on the other side (under side accessed through the back plate), but there is not one on this one. So the only way I see to tighten it up is on the top with a very wide straight screw diver. Did this but is still comes loose. I guess my main question is shouldn’t there be a nut on the back of this to tighten? Does yours have one? I have a rg770dx reissue with the same tremolo and it has a nut on the backside to tighten if need be. Hopefully you’re able to reply to me as I’m not finding much info online as to if there should or shouldn’t be one. It would be quite weird if something like that was missing. I really wanna figure this out though as I just wanna play it without the socket coming loose!! Please help! And thanks for your videos!

    Hi . . yes there's a nut on the underside of the tremolo system that you get to by removing the back plate. It's a bit of a pain to tighten because it's set back at the end of a shaft, so the only way to tighten it is with a pair of long nosed plyers or a long reach socket or something like that. But since I tightened the nut on mine it hasn't come loose again . . 🤔😊

  • @guitar-academy

    @guitar-academy

    Good question . . Yes, the part of the bridge that accepts the tremolo bar is bolted into place and it was loose. I went in through the back and tightened the nut up. It was a bit awkward but it has sorted the issue out. Thanks for the question 😃

    That's a good question . . and I have to answer it with balance. Yes, it will ware quicker than the silver or black plating, but it will still take years to ware with daily use. The Jem I show in the first video I've owned for about 20 years and it is starting to show corrosion and rust braking through in places, but it took years before it did. I hope this helps 😊😀

    Hi. Hope you are doing well. My Pia should reach within the next two weeks or so. It's close to three months since I pre-ordered the guitar. Though, the guitar comes packed in a hard shell case, I am contemplating about purchasing an additional soft padded gig bag. Problem is that I am unable to find the actual physical dimensions (LxWxH) of the guitar anywhere. Kindly let me know the dimensions in cm/mm. Thank you.

    It is indeed awesome. The playability, the way it sounds and it looks gorgeous in white. I like it more than my Yahama 212 but then for the price the Yahama, too, is a value for money product. The Pia is a class apart. The finish, the pickups, fretboard, the steel frets, all give a nice feeling of the quality workmanship that has gone into making of this guitar.
