Hey everyone! It's been nearly a year since I started my youtube channel, and I wanted to take an opportunity to revisit the bass that started it all - the Ibanez EHB1005MS. Throughout my (continuing) journey with this bass, we've swapped the pickups, sent it to friends, and recently added a pick guard. Let's take a minute to stop and smell the roses with this awesome bass.
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with MJC Ironworks Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(130) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at www.mjcironworks.com

It was because of this bass that I found your channel. Pre-COVID I was looking for a light and ergonomic replacement to my beloved Stingray 5 HH for live gigs. 11 lbs. of bass on my shoulder was killing my aging back during rehearsals and gigs, so I was looking at light weight options. My search brought me to the video where you thoroughly compared the NS Design Wave bass to your then stock EHB. That comparison video was the deciding factor to rule out the NS Design and go for the Ibanez. I eventually got an EHB 1505 later that spring and love it! One thing about these that maybe should get a mention in your reviews is the cheapness of the included gig bag. After only a couple months one of the cheap plastic rings that secure the shoulder strap broke while i was loading it into a care and the bass almost hit pavement. Luckily my reflexes were quick that day! I have since replaced the case with a Gator Pro-Go Ultimate electric guitar gig bag. I've been telling people on social media that are interested in this bass to factor in the cost of a decent gig bag/case, as the quality of the included bag is very disproportionate to the quality of the bass. Something better is definitely needed if you are going to regularly gig with it outside of your home. Thanks for all the great videos in 2020, looking forward to what you have in store in 2021!
@LowEndLobster

Thanks Michael! Very good point on the gig bag. I've heard a lot of complaints about them and it's definitely on the cheap side for an instrument over $1k. Glad yours is now well protected and that it survived the fall, and thanks for being a great part of the community :)

Well done video! Is there any particular reason not to go with the non-multi scale version of this bass? I would think the normal one would be more comfortable to play, and more natural to transition between this and other basses.
One of the competitors to the Ibanez EHB1005MS would be the new Cort A5 Beyond (multiscale). It would be great to see a comparison. Single cut vs twin horns.

Hey Nicholas! The EHBs are awesome basses, but I recommend shopping with a store that has a good return policy as Ibanez can still be a little inconsistent with QC (to make sure you get one that satisfies you). Awesome ! That pickguard is soooo gorgeous Your EHB video series is so helpful on making the decision whether or not to buy this bass. Couple questions for you though : - is the pickup size the same as the Nordstrand's big split of the 1505 ? - someone mentioned that the fretwork was not so good, what do you think ? Thanks !
@LowEndLobster
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mosbi! Glad you're enjoying the videos :). I believe the pickup size is slightly off by about 1mm in each direction. I forget the specifics, but from what I remember they're not an exact fit. Fretwork wise, I haven't had any issues. There was one dude who had really bad luck where the neck pocket wasn't sitting right and the bass wouldn't intonate. That's a major shame for sure. Mine is from a very early run as I got it in early march/late feb 2020. Overall, I've never had any issues with the fretwork on my Indonesian Ibanezes.

@@LowEndLobster Thanks for taking the time to answer with such details man I'm soooo hesitating between this ehb with a pickup swap and a Kiesel Zeus (same price however the kiesel would cost me a lot more in shipping & duties tax)
I have just modded my multiscale Ibanez SRMS805. Wired the stock Bartolini BH2 pickups in parallel, switched the neck and the bridge pickups places (for some reason Ibanez put the hot pickup in the neck position and the weaker one on the bridge), and seitched the preamp mode to a +3dB input to make the output a little bit hotter. Now it sounds way less dull then it was before.

Awesome series of the EHB, starting with the magic transformation trick video that got me laughing for minutes. I've since then watched all of the EHB comparison and upgrade videos you've produced over the past few months. The only question in my mind is: how much difference does the wood in the body and neck make, despite the pick-up used? Well, if you're looking to extend this series a little further, would it be possible to have the EHB1005MS and the EHB1505MS with the same pick-up? I really like how the Aguilar sounds on the EHB1005MS - very well balanced, leaving nothing to be desired, but found the EHB1505MS with Nordstrands sounding great with even more high frequency grit. Well, if you wouldn't mind entertaining the possibility of getting another set of the Aguilar DCB and put it into the EHB1505MS? First of all, is the compartment fit identical to even make this happen at first place?

I tried this bass at a music store, really hoping to buy it, as the specs, aesthetic and weight were what I was looking for. Unfortunately, after picking it up, I realized they cut a lot of corners in production: gaps in the neck pocket area, unsanded route area for the bridge (then just painted over), strange setup, lots of sharp fret edges. Seriously? I sourced a mid 80s Yamaha BX-1 for my headless. I still love how this Ibanez looks, and the progressive nature of the features, just wish it was made in Japan.

I don't know what it is with this bass. But I think it looks so cool now with the pick guard. Not a fan of the color, but I really dig that Bass :D Maybe in white, or matte black ... I wonder why there's so few headless bass on the market

Thanks asfodhell! They did just drop a matte pink a little while ago ;P. Hoping for a greater finish variety in 2021 and beyond. I dig some of the short scale finishes too.

@Deli Sandwich I have one here, the SRMS805. However the B string is 35.5" as opposed to 35" on the EHB, which makes it a bit more particular for string choice vs the EHB.

Hey Lobster, from your experience, how does a graphite neck differ tonally from a wooden neck? I have a Sterling Sub 4 Stingray and I really don't like the thinner neck on it and was thinking of replacing it with a Status neck that feels more like a normal Stingray neck, minus the difference in material obviously. I just want the actual neck profile of a USA Stingray.

Great question, Sean! That's a tough one to answer. From a Stingray perspective, the woods on the bass have very little impact compared to other basses. IMO, the neck is also a small percentage of the sound overall. My daily driver J bass was rocking a Status neck for 8-9 years and that neck is now on my Strat bass from D. Taylor. They're great necks!
Bought a regular scale ehb1005 online at GC. I love lots of things about it, the neck and frets are really good... However I don't find it ergonomic. The angle on the back is not suited for a fat person and it causes me to have to bend my left wrist excessively. Think the MS could improve that. I also can't play with my thumb and wrist down (Gary Willis style). The body angle causes me to be unable to mute the low b with my thumb. Its pretty comfortable for playing with wrist up (Jaco style). When slapping my right elbow hits the straplock. Also the straplocks are extremely noisy. I think I'll have to return it as I am really looking for a bass I can play for many hours a day. I think I'll go for a Spector, the concave body may be more suited to my fatness.

Thanks for sharing your experience Kai!
Have you done a comparison of this bass against the Kiesel headless 5 stings? I'm deciding between those two. I know Kiesel makes, I think 4 different body styles of headless. But a comparison would be great.

I haven't really had the opportunity to play many Keisel basses in my lair, but that's a great idea! I do have a friend who is a Keisel artist!
Hello there, If i got this bass, I probably change a stock preamp to darkglass tone capsule preamp

Thanks Caney! That'd be a great mod. It would totally work here as long as you did a stacked vol/blend or vol/vol. (only 4 knob holes)

Hey Mr. Lobster! Is there a soft case you would recommend for the EHB1005MS? I'd like to upgrade from the stock gig bag and was wondering if there's anything out there that fits well. Sorry if you've already covered this and I missed it.

Hey Invin! I have not, I just use the stock bag cause the bass isn't that heavy. That being said, I think there's some posts on Talkbass that have the answer in the EHB thread.

I suggest the Mono Vertigo but for guitar, it will fit perfectly according to talkbass
I’m curious about the the body on these basses do they wear as easily as the wood finishes on the soundgear line?
@LowEndLobster

I haven't heard complaints about wearing through this finish like with the transparent matte finishes on the soundgears (and the EHB1505) BUT I know some folks have reported getting some shiny spots. YMMV!
Is it 18volts? Do you think putting a obp3 preamp is a good idea?
Catherine where you at? I need one of those pick gaurds lol

Hi! Thanks for great contents. I am currently using the ehb1005ms and got a chace to grab a set of nordies gotten off from the 1505ms. I just found out your comment saying the nordies and barts are not the same size. Will it be possible to swap my barts to nordies? Thanks! - I am commenting this again, waiting for help. Thanks again!

Thank you! When I measured the pickups, I found there to be a difference of about 1mm in each direction. Depending on the pickup routes, the pickups may or may not fit. I really can't say for certain as I have not tried the swap.

@@LowEndLobster What I understand is that the pickups have differences, which means nords are not big at every directions and hope this is right. I should go though it. :)

From what I remember, it was 1mm wider than the 1005 in one direction, and 1mm narrower in the other. I could be completely off as I don't have the 1505 anymore. Your mileage may vary!
Can you describe the differences between the Aguilar pickups and the Nordstrand pickups? Are the Nordys really that much better than the others, or are they just focused on being bright and gnarly for the metal players? I am so close to getting one of these EHBXX05MS basses, and really want to order the right bass the first time and have an idea whether or not I will need to swap pickups. I play with a pick but am not really a metal player; I guess I'm wondering if there's a way I can figure out whether the Aguilar pickups will be enough of an improvement...? I know it's a hard question to answer...

Hopefully this video will help- kzread.info/dash/bejne/Zqyd19F9n63cpaw.html I compare the Aguilars, stock Barts, and the Nordies on the 1505. I really think the Aggies were a big step up over the stock 'Barts' (made by cort). The Nordies from what I understand are genuine in the 1505.
I am really curious about this bass as it checks off all my needs. Is it quite versatile? I am a P bass and jazz bass fan and not so much a modern bass slap guy. Would you recommend this for a vintage tone guy?

Hey Jayu! It's pretty versatile, but you're probably not going to be getting P/J tones with this config. There are probably other soapbars with an internal P config that would probably get you more vintage tones.
