Ian Wright - Born to finish

The ultimate finisher, Ian Wright.
279 starts, 185 goals.
He scored them all... from 40 yard lobs to one yard tap-ins. From beating three men and smashing it past the keeper to incredible diving headers, Ian Wright was a scoring machine.
Here's Ian Wright, in all his glory.

I was too young to remember him, I was born when he was in his prime which was the mid 90's but did watch Bergkamp and Henry but fuuuuuuck if Wrighty was playing now he would be playing for Madrid and Bayern etc, some of these goals I haven't seen ever. Everyone likes to think their club legends were the best at something - but Wright really is a credible shout for best PURE finisher of all time. During most of his career Arsenal were ideologically opposed to chances for either team. Every week was a grim physical war with no opportunities at all, and every week he would score from a single quarter of a chance. 1-0 to the Arsenal. Tap-ins, Headers, Volleys, 1v1s, Rockets, Lobs, Solos, every type of improvised finish under the sun, and all done with a kind of...glee.

Workrate, vision, pace, sublime finishing and tenacity all rolled into one, Ian Wright. . . Legend!

And, has anyone ever lobbed more keepers in the history of mankind?? The salmon header off the back of his head into the opposite corner isn't humanly possible. One of the best strikers to grace the English game, was always shafted and underrated because he played for the most hated club in England, far better than Shearer and all the other chumps who started for England around that period. Shearer was a yes man, that's what the corrupt FA like, Wright was outspoken and didn't hesitate to speak his mind and they didn't like that.

A hopeful ball over the top maybe and he scampers onto it with strength and pace and balance, ball glued to his feet. Just unreal player and does not even get close to the credit he deserves as up there with the greats. People say players like Raul are legends, and they definitely are. But WRight is much better!

Great video, and what a player. Unlucky to play in a team going through transition from 92-96, where he still scored a shitload of goals. Henry overshadowed him in terms of goals, and he was a better all round player, but had Wright been in the 97-02 team he would have scored silly amounts of goals. In recent years he's been a bit chippy about Arsenal and the results of the club, but one thing that always comes across is his love for the club. A legend.

Somedays you just couldn't believe what you'd seen and have to wait until MOTD for a replay. I was right behind the goal for the triple lob v Everton and everyone went nuts. When the game finally kicked off again, there was a spontaneous outburst of applause starting in the North Bank that swept around the stadium and the great man took a bow to us all. Great day. Really felt for Southall though, no chance whatsoever.

Some real finishers back in the day, real pure strikers, like Ruud, henrik larsson, Henry, just a real goal scorer that didnt fuck up half their shots

I'm here the morning after Gabriel Martinelli became the first Arsenal player since Wrighty to score in each of his first four starts for the club. Now if he can only continue to emulate this utter LEGEND.

As a brazilian, I hope Gabriel Martinelli grab the opportunities by the horns. He already scored in his first premiership start. More than that, I hope he can keep his mind straight and free from shit. Many brazilian players tend to lose themselves in alcohol, women and parasite friends, especially when the expectation is very high. The expectation on him wasn't that high though. He was grown in the academy of a small club here in Brazil, named Ituano (their president played in the premiership, Juninho Paulista. Has idol status among the Middlesborough fanbase). He was playing in the biggest tournament for academy players in the country 11 months ago. He is more known now than he was at the beginning of the year, which is uncommon, considering he is in a famous, historical club of Europe. Arsenal found a true jewel. I hope you can work him well, and I hope he can value himself higher than distractions.

@@otaviofrn_adv Thanks, Otavio, it's great to get the perspective of a thoughtful Brazilian football lover. Brazilian football will always have a special place in my heart: the first world cup I remember is Mexico 1970, when of course I fell in love with that wonderful Brazilian team. And again in 1982. In those media-poor times, it felt like football from another planet.

@@worldlyconcerns you're welcome man. I didn't got to see any, I'm from the penta (portuguese word for 5th title) generation. But I've heard the histories from my grandpa about 70 and my dad about 82. More so, the coach of 82, Tele Santana, made my club from the heart, São Paulo FC, win the world. We beat a Cruyff coached Barcelona squad, with Stoichkov running the attack, and a Milan with Maldini, Baresi, Costacurta that was European Champion almost every year thanks to his football vision. Nowadays, figures like him are missed very much in our game (he passed 12 years ago). Our players, especially the ones raised by the youth academies of major clubs, are cocky as hell now. Don't accept the training of fundamentals, only think about status and hair styles and are, in general, poorly formed. Always with a fucked up dad or agent in his back, so the little "angel" can do no wrong (irony here)

@@otaviofrn_adv Interesting you should say that, Otávio. Around the time he brought Alexis Sanchez to Arsenal, I remember hearing Arsene Wenger say he thought the best strikers come out of South America these days because they typically have had to struggle against the odds to succeed in an era when many European players have opportunity handed to them on a plate. I guess the problem of entitled egocentrism is not an exclusively European one.

I have always been a fan of this guy, just loved the passion he showed playing the game, makes me sound like an old man (at the ripe old age of 28!) but you just don't get his sort any more. You can really see the work he put into his whole game from this clip it's a shame that we didn't see more of Wright in an England shirt. I've also seen that recent interview on how he became a pro footballer and it makes me admire him all the more. Great video and love the music too.

Palace and Arsenal Legend - never seen someone so clinical in front of goal. Scored all kinds of goals, 6 yards, 18yards, 30 yards, diving headers where the boots are flying, If you needed someone chinned, he'd do that too! Inspirational player (:

Imagine Giroud or Welbeck trying this stuff. It seems that Wright and Henry didnt play nearly as much with their back to goal. I can imagine Walcott doing this with some of recent finishing before his injuries. #Walcottthroughthemiddle

The fact of the matter is that real strikers are so comfortable in front of the goal they put the ball away with ease...a tap, a lob, a touch either way the ball goes in the net with little effort.

I know many people won't agree but I've always thought the goal he scored against Swindon was his greatest (1.13). Anyone who has played the game knows how high the level of precision is that you need to chip a goalie who wasn't even that far off his line. The turn on a sixpence and finish is just incredible. It's a chip with real pace in it too, which makes it even harder to execute.
