His effortless flow and rhythm is rare. You might like a modern drummer who cites Ian as an influence (Highway Star in particular) here, with a nice solo in this song... kzread.info/dash/bejne/eHyk16eqfaTJdMo.html
I love how he says it's not a difficult part, yet in the whole solo section he's playing 16th notes on the hihat with one hand, and making them feel just right on an opening and closing hihat as he steadily increases intensity. World class and humble.

Exactly. That part is actually very difficult, for the 'average' drummer. Well, Ian Paice certainly is a different breed though. "Just playing time..." Yeah, right xD

Yeah I was thinking the same thing as I watched that. Heard the song a ton of times, but watching it is so much better. I never would have picked up how truly badass that part was without seeing this video. Amazing!

Yes it's simple in theory but in that tempo and as rocksolid as he plays it it's not easy.

AMEN on the snare tone...Ian over the decades has had questionable snare tones imo on DP records...he got it right here!
4 singers, 3 guitar players, 3 bass players, 2 keyboard players but only 1 Ian Paice!! The true heart and soul of Deep Purple

@evidamayani4170 . Correct. Purple now on their 4th guitarist. Ritchie, Tommy Bolin (RIP), Steve Morse, Simon McBride. Joe Satriani (Satch) doesn't count as he was only brought in to complete the 93 tour in support of The Battle Rages On after Ritchie walked out/left the band for the second and final time early in the tour.
Brilliant , my favourite drummer of all time . The legendary Ian Paice 👍👏👏👏

Masterclass! The subtleties and nuances, the way Ian doesn't overplay... The way he holds that groove - outstanding!
Living legend. 50 years after Made In Japan was released and still kicking ass. Wow...

Made in Japan is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded.
Ian Paice is a living legend and Icon in the music world ... he has been and continues to be one of my greatest influences
Saw Ian a few times live , but the best was at Barrymores when he was touring with Gary Moore. I was less than 20 ft from him with an unobstructed view of his pedal work. What a machine!! Says something when Gary Moore is on stage and all you can do is watch the drummer. Legend!
When amazingly humble Ian Paice is proud of his work, you know it's gonna be good. Awesome work. That is some crisp sounding drums 👌
Amazing Ian. A great song is when you can take the vocals out and the song stands on its own. This does.
You are one of my favorite drummers of ALL time. You are one of the reasons I started playing the drums back in 1973. Rock on Sir.
This man is one of 3 people who made me want to play drums when I was about 5 years old.
Ian is such a powerhouse and a groove monster. Truly one of the greats.
Used to play drums, wish I still did, but Ian Paice was and still is my favorite drummer. I used to try and play like him, but was never good enough to keep up. Such a beast, gonna go put some DP on now and rock out to sleep.
Wow, such great feel, precision and musicality.
The technique coupled with such humility….the man is a living legend….need to see him on tour soon 😎👍🥁🎶❤️
The wizard of drums. Bravo, maestro!
My favorite all time drummer. Saw purple for the 3rd time this year in Lisbon and it’s always a joy to watch him play. It was a great gig, btw. Keep rocking Pacey. 🙏🏻👍🏻
Groove is king and there's the proof. Thanks Ian for a lifetime of solid grooves.
Huge respect for one of the greatest drummers ever. Thanks Ian.

Roger is smoking on the bass. He puts down an excellent line. Paice and Glover - great rhythm section, one of the best ever!

I was listening to that bass groove, it was perfect for this tune.
Ian...Legend! Ian's playing is all about the music and not flash. However, his restraint and style prove that he is as a big of a part the sound that is Deep Purple. And at his age, he's proved that a drummer's can survive the business that is rock and roll.
Had the pleasure of meeting this gentleman ..in my view he is the greatest rock /jazz drummer since Buddy Rich
Just feel and groove for days every note has a purpose...LOVE that style of drumming and that bass combined its almost like they are performing a dance perfectly in motion with eachother never overplaying or fighting for the spotlight...fantastic.
I could watch Ian play all day. Such a great drummer and always comes across as a great bloke too
My mentor, guru, and inspiration. Thank you Ian. Fell in love with your groove since Who Do We Think We Are.
My favorite rock drummer ever!!☀
Deep Purple ..yeah.. GREATEST band ever. Fortunate to see them a few years ago.
Great job my friend! You are one of my idols. My top five albums are all live albums and the one with Mr. Pace is «Whitesnake, Love in the heart of the city» from 1980. I have played the LP and CD to shreads long time ago. Love it. Thank you. I have seen DP twice in Oslo. Thank you again!
Loved that detail about the intensity of the drum part matching the guitar solo’s intensity. 😎🥁😎
Great performance! This is such a good song and I really enjoy the solo section. I'm a Finnish drummer and a keyboardist and there's a lot of things I really like here. Deep Purple have been blessed by having one of the greatest drummers of all time but also two of the best keyboardists. Jon Lord was fantastic and I've always really liked Don Airey in all the albums he's been playing. I really appreciate the upload. It's great to hear this monitor mix of the song. In some ways it sounds better to me this way. The final version that ended up on the album is still really good though. Thank you for keeping the quality of music very high all these years. Take care and I hope you're having a great day.
F A N T A S T I C...great dynamics and very interesting arrangend...always serving the Song...I want you on my next album 😉
Браво МАСТЕР ! Долгих лет!
One od the greatest rock drummer in history,if not the greatest.
The snare sounds so great. I love it. Mr Paice, I started to be a drummer at the age of 12 because of you and stil playing now at 60. Thanks and God bless you!

Absolute class! still got the great groove and technique Mr. Paice 👌
Awesome Ian loved the stuff u did with Whitesnake, back in the day. I believe ur one of the most underrated drummers my friend. Outstanding
Awesome! What a groove, and so musical to listen to. Thanks for this Ian. I hope our friend Cliff shook your hand on my behalf a couple of weeks ago. 🤓🤘🥁

ridiculously good....nice!😁 Ian is the man!
Stunning performance. Nailed it!!
Thank you for everything, Mr. Paice!!
Still got it Ian..enjoy..love everything you play. Just remember out of all legendary drummers, please accept that you are the very best. Thankyou 💯
So smooth! You make the drums and cymbals sound great!
Absolutely nailed it!!! 😯😯😯😯😯🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Уважаю этого музыканта.
Love how the beat supports the solos. It really has that leaning into it feel. Nice Paistes too!
6:42 My favourite part. Watch how the intensity builds to a crescendo while pushing the beat, but then instantly drops back into the tightest, deepest groove possible. Playing the notes is often simple compared to making them FEEL good.
You have it, or you have it not... Amazing to still keep that groove and precision at that age... incredible!!
Very great Mr Paice. You are my inspiration in drumming. Thank you
Thank you for this Mr. Paice , my hero, what a great performance on this track! The master in action!!
Amazing! As always! You sir are a huge inspiration to me and I'm sure to many others. Thank you very much
Impeccable , as usual Mr. Paice.
still love your drumming-over many many years!!
Love the long extended solo section, that buildup works so well.
P H E N O M E N A L drummer! Why would any fan of the band doubt that he'd nail it?
The track seemed so-so on the album, but live it became a very different beast. Thanks for the very interesting video.

I love this man, incredible musician.
Awesome work Ian. Playing in good form.
the hi-hat on the solo section is one of the grooviest I've ever heard. So beautiful!
Even as a ten year old kid in the 70's (geeez, am I really that old?) when my older brother came along with a few Deep Purple records, I instantly admired how Ian Paice played the drums. A genius, non the less. And he is still doing it today. Thank you Sir, for being such a constant part of my life.

Ian, the legend! And so humble! The beginning of the track reminds me... Kansas, in the 80s 🎼🎸
My favorite track from Now What, indeed a great groove and also a great vocal work in my opinion.
Wow! Stunning drumming and what a beautiful bass line by Mr Glover. No wonder they drive the best rock band in the world so well.
I have always been a big fan of you and your god given talent as a drummer, I have learned a lot from you sir. this a smooth take. loved it. keep this great content coming.
If you have It, please show us the video of one of your greatest studio performances ever: Hey Cisco!

People say shit like that about guitarists and it's a pile of crap. If it were true, they just wouldn't bother playing anything. Imagine being so fucking dumb as to praise what a musician *doesn't* play.🙄
Great to meet in Leeds - as personable in the flesh as he appears on the videos - thank you for the 50+ years of pleasure you and your numerous colleagues have provided me with.
Great to see Deep Purple still performing, Have seen you guys every time you've been to Adelaide SA. I was only a young guy then, but, it was way back in 1975 but have been a fan since.
Nice to see you back Ian...Cheers from the Rockies.
His way of drumming is always spot on...no extra nonsense. I am 64 years old now lived in Holland now in Austria. I grew up with Deep purple so to say. He is not showing how good he is. Ian is in love with his instrument and his band that's drumming all about. Believe it or not I bought the CD Now what today in Spittal kärnten what a coincidence. Anyway thanks for sharing Ian 🙂👍👍
Ian Paice, the reason I took up drumming as a 14 year old.
Legend! And a killer drum sounds! Especially snare drum! Best wishes from Croatia 🙏🏻🌈
Always enjoy watching you play Ian!! professional through and through.
Ian Paice on the Drums, Yessss!!!
Enjoyed it very much! Much better than a drum machine because with human feeling. Super Song, great drummer! Got the CD. 👍🏻👏🏻🙏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Excelente trabajo Ian.....lo mejor de lo mejor.
Well done, and great sounding drums!
Fantastic to see you Ian. I love what you have brought to drumming. You’re one of the drumming legends that I’m glad I’ve been alive to experience. Thanks man. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love it Ian , and you deflinetly nailed it with fabulously great time feel !!! Wow
What a pleasure and an honour it was to have watched you and the band play, last Sunday in Lisbon! Thank you Ian, for a very special night!
Your left arm must have been burning after that!! Incredible job Ian
Brilliant sir , been a follower for decades and decades !!!!!
We are so lucky to have you still groovin!
Happy birthday Ian. You are the reason I started playing 🥁.
Mr. Paice, I just wanted to say that you have always been the person that influenced my drumming from the very beginning. I actually started off playing Trumpet but when "Made in Japan" came out I just had to get it. After hearing it I was pulled into it by your playing. I put my Trumpet away and started to play the drums. Then I didn't know why I was so moved by your playing but now that I'm much older I know the reason. You ability to play with such dynamics is amazing. It's easy to play drums loud and with power, but to be able to play with such control of dynamics and still keep the power in your strokes is amazing. Today we drummer have so many tools we can use to give us the little something extra, but back in the day when you were on stage there were few extras you could use. Needless to say few can make drums speak, and you are one of the few that can. Thank you for your positive influence you have had on so many drummers.
Thanks a lot. God bless you. Long live Mr Paice

Wonderful, thank you!
There is elegance in simplicity. As much as I love Cozy Powell's drum intro in "Stargazer", I love Charlie Watts' intro in "Honky Tonk Woman" just as much!
Great to have you back on here Mr Paice.
