i3 12100f: When will it bottleneck your GPU?

omnirayelectronics.com/
When doing a budget build, its important to note that your path to upgrades can be inhibited by the cheaper parts in your build.
Today we are going to look at the Intel i3 12100f and test out multiple levels of GPUs until we start to see a large bottleneck caused by the cpu.
Games used in benchmark:
Red Dead Redemption 2
cyberpunk 2077
Tiny Tinas Wonderlands
Doom Eternal

    Yeah so pretty much, the crowds are CPU heavy and requires more cores, my r5 is also bottlenecking my card in Spiderman when having the crowd and RT on, but just reduce the ammount of crowd and the ammount of objects displayed in the reflections and I'm good. I have this with a 6600 for my second build and lord is so good.

    Resolution is very important in this equation, as high resolutions will make the video card run slower, which means less FPS, which generally means the CPU doesn't have to work so hard. I didn't catch what resolution you were using, but it looked like high frame rates, suggesting 1080p. While twitch games (FPS and such) benefit from high FPS, in conjunction with monitors with high refresh rates, for the sorts of game I ( and others play,) 60fps or so is fine, so no problem running at 4k resolution in many games. As I game on a big screen TV, that can't do better than 60hz anyways, I would never worry about any i series CPU bottlenecking. But a first person shooter player trying to get a high frame rate, understanably so, would certainly care about this topic, and have more of a chance of seeing CPU bottlenecking.

    I'm currently using an i7-8700K with an RTX 3070 and 1080p causes a huge bottleneck for me so I ended up getting a cheap 4K TV so I could bump up to 1440p. So far so good though this 8 series architecture is really starting to show its age in the latest titles.

  • @LegitCamelRetro

    @LegitCamelRetro

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah, everything below 10th gen is starting to show its age a little bit, but I find 1440p is a nicer gaming experience overall so you can probably stretch a few more years out of it.

    @LegitCamelRetro

    I appreciate the nice feedback! You are correct 1080p was the resolution used for all the benchmarks shown here, perhaps I will do another more comprehensive video in the future showing all resolutions with a wider variety of GPUs. Also, yes, generally speaking when you are bumping up the resolution and graphics settings the GPU starts to become more of a bottleneck than the CPU. You could arguably run a 3090 on a 12100f if you are maxed out 4K settings with ray tracing. But for the games that require more from the CPU it will start to look pretty bad.

    @@leungonion4383 Yeah when you start going to higher resolutions you can usually start bumping up the GPU, at higher resolutions and settings the CPU is very infrequently your bottleneck, but at 1440p it probably really depends on what titles you play and what not, I did a video with the 12100f and 6900xt with 4k resolution to kind of prove how far you can really push the little guy.

    Well I just got a 4090 for my 12100f set up lol. altho I do play at 4k and the 12100f can hit 144fps pretty easily in my experience in most games. ( altho I am running it at 5.2 ghz, can do 5,3 but it requires a decent amount more voltage). but it does match the 5600x in multicore and the 13th gen intel in single core in cinnebench R23. but I am vaguely wondering if it can keep up. I had a 6700xt and 3070ti for a while and those were definitly to slow at 2k high settings and even more 4k at high settings.

    @@LegitCamelRetro I was thinking about maybe doing that if the i3 proves to be insufficient ( altho I exect it to run fine). But if not, then I am not sure if the 13600K/13400 will be a lot faster than something like a 12400F or especially the 12490F since ive read it overclocks really well. And both options will be a lot cheaper ( around 100-200 euros less), not that I really am on a value build anymore, I threw that out of the window when getting my specific mobo, ddr5 ram, now this gpu. But I mean atleast it is all faster, with a 13600k vs 12490f I think the 12490f could very well be the faster option. the 13600k has 4mb more chache, but I expect the 12490f to have much better single core speed. it is pretty hard since on neither I have been able to see comparisons or really like proper videos with oc results on benchmarks like R23 that I can compare my cpu to vs theirs. like in cinebench R 23 my multicore score was 10K+ and single core was 2047 while I am pretty sure the oc 13900k got 2198 so in single core its roughly 7% faster. And I think 2047 was at "only" 5.1 ghz but not sure. I do know that the 12400 should be able to go higher than 5.3 and especially the 12490f but I cant confirm it either so im really not sure what cpu upgrade I should do. I know my i3 is pretty locked at 5.3, maybe 5.4 with way to much voltage works. but I dont really wanna do that lol. so for the i3 this is about the limit that I do know for sure. might be intresting for you to take a look at the 12490f and oc it sometime as I have not seen much on it.

    @@LegitCamelRetro So I got the gpu at last, and it seems like a decent combo, im usually game bottlenecked as neither the gpu or cpu see full usage. unless I run 4k all maxed out then it is almost always a gpu bottleneck with some exeptions in bf2042 where I at rare times will get a cpu bottleneck if a lot of stuff goes down. but besides this maybe being a weird build I think ill stick to the i3 for a while and maybe get a i5 if I see a good deal on it or AM5, but im not sure if thats worth it as AMD is kinda iffy on if they will indeed support the socket that long as it was a pain in the ass on AM4 with people really struggling to make AMD keep their promise. If you're above 50% on a hyperthreaded CPU while just gaming, you're bottlenecking. Virtual threads are no where near as effective as real cores, and you'll get more performance if there's additional real cores on the CPU in the same situations.

    @@antonioton-tonfukuchi3106 It depends if you want to use the GPU encoder or not, if you are using an AMD gpu unfortunately the encoder kind of sucks compared to nvec, so then you need to use software encoding which is really hard on the CPU, in which case I would not recommend the 12100f. Another option is to wait for next gen GPUs which will ahve AV1 encoders which is supposed to be fantastic for streaming, or you could bite the bullet and get an intel GPU which has AV1 encoders already but as many reviewers have mentioned intel drivers suck.
