I just built my first modern PC. My dad has been building and programming for 40 years and i recently lost him. One of the things we wanted to do together was build one again together since his brain wasnt what it used to be. So i started watching you and some others to get back up to speed from when i was a teenager. Sadly, i lost him before we got to do that, so after i packed up his house i decided to go straight to microcenter for my first time. This was my first ever full build including selecting and buying my own choice of hardware. I think the thing came out absolutely beautiful. I did research for about a year and a half and got it to post on my first try. Im really proud of this build, and I could not have done it without your videos, and a few other influencers. I wish my dad was here to see it. He would have loved all of the lights and nonsense... haha god he was so old school. Ty for everything that you do. Im still learning how to set this thing up for max performance. This thing is an absolute BEAST of a machine.

Hope each day is gets a little better. I lost my Dad a few years ago. Lost grandparent in 1983-85 and 1992. I’ve been near death or maybe better said death has been a part of my life since my earliest memories. For years it was just people I didn’t know or who I had met but never got close to. However when my mothers parents died in 1992, I was living with them and much closer to them than my parents. I still miss them. A very important part of my life was gone all in a 3 month span. My grandfather and I made scale models together. The very first one we made was a 1:72 Sopwitb Camel fighter plane. It’s memories of doing things together that are most important when loved ones pass on. I still remember sitting in my grandfathers lap at his desk in Riverside California 1972.

"New stuff coming out is not gonna make your PC suddenly stop working. All that's changed is the ceiling." That's hella comfortable. It really is comforting to see because all you see are people just getting the baddest and greatest of builds. For us midrange, or even budget gamers, we just want a PC that runs on decent FPS on older games because we never had the time or the hardware to play with them before.

For the average pc gamer anything built with modern gen parts will last years before you have to upgrade. Granted you dont get the bare minimum at the start. Spending a bit more on parts at the start will save you in the long run since you wont have to upgrade to maybe a new cpu or graphics card.

i have a ancient i5 4460 4c/4t and was looking for upgrade,right? Thats 4th gen cpu,and i was looking for 8 gen upgrade,maan,just waste of skin..they have same core count and base frequency but costs 10x more,like..why to pay more and still have the same? And just sheere amount of different intel cpu-s w 2% more capability in between hits the prices up high..way to high..thats not tech,its just clever marketing and fraud to bunch of who doesn't know much of this stuff..

My PC is at least $2500, and its 5 years 1 month old. 2017 everything was expensive, RGB ram, Ryzen 1700, Vega56. Kinda like DDR5 now, x670, Ryzen 7000, Rtx4000 soon.

I pride myself in prolonging tech for as long as I can before upgrading. That also makes it feel massive whenever an upgrade is done.

I've been a life long "behind the power curve" builder/user, always getting 1 to 2 generation older parts new and below MSRP. This has undoubtedly saved me a good amount of sanity over the last few years and I am grateful for it.

Sanity is worth a lot more than money. I'd rather buy the current thing now and know it's gonna work smoothly than have the absolute best super new tech and have to bash my head against the inevitable early adopter problems and bugs. I want my computer to just work. Not have to fight it day in day out just to have the ability to brag I've got the best thing out there.

Until my 11700K/3080 system I'm on now I almost never upgraded CPU and RAM, I ran a Core 2 Quad Q6600 until 2016 then picked up an i7-2600 plus motherboard and RAM for dirt cheap. All I'd do is plop in a new GPU every 3 years or so and keep on going, 2-3 generation old GPUs don't cost much at all--from 2008 to 2021 I think I spent under a grand on my gaming PC.

My old eyes don't see things like they used to, I'll rock my hardware until people question how I get by before upgrading.

Getting ready to build my first PC after years of just buying laptops. I've been watching many hours of your videos here on KZread, thanks for all your hard work, it really helped demystify the process.

Might I add one more point... The benefit of buying last gen platform - all kinks have been ironed out by the time the new stuff comes out. I am sure that ZEN4 platform will have bugs that would take at least a few months to resolve, while ZEN3 is relatively bug free now. So, if you need a stable system, go for last gen.

I apply this same philosophy to buying consoles. I got my ps4 in 2018 (found out about red dead 2 while looking up a guide on rdr 1 and that did it for me) not long before ps5 came out and the slim model had none of the lauch model hardware issues (although, the ps4 probably had the best launch in terms of overall quality but I digress).

Great segment Jay. I recently did some maintenance on my parents 10 year old i7-3610QM AIO. Move everything to an SSD, refreshed the thermal paste and have it a good dust out and it keeps ticking with Windows 10. They need a new one but it is amazing what a good spec from 10 years ago can do today. A moderate upgrade with an i5 12600K or Ryzen 5800X would probably go another 10 year’s.

I appreciate this video very much just got all my parts for my first ever build and was worried about the new stuff coming out. This definitely puts me at ease so thank you.

I've been watching a lot of your videos lately to try and get to know more about building a pc. I'm going to build my first system this winter. Currently waiting to see the prices of the r5000 series to go down a bit and hopefully the radeon 6000 series as well. It's because of your videos that I feel comfortable choosing the ryzen 7 5700x, I wouldn't even know it existed if it wasn't for your videos. So thank you so much for guiding new people through this, you have no idea how helpful it is to get slapped in the face with "you don't need that" while most tech channels only conplain about more budgetfriendly parts

Sticking to a budget (with 10% buffer) really helps you decide on the components you're gonna buy. Built my first PC last 2020 around an AMD Ryzen 3300x, A520 Mobo, and a gtx 1660 and still rocking it today...Finished Witcher 3 a couple of times at 1080p High settings and got around 60+ fps average..I think I'll be good 2-3 more years with this rig hehehe

A little late to this video, but thank you. This made me feel alot better. Im in the process of building my first PC. I have my PSU, CPU, GPU, and tower cooler. Everything else is picked out just trying to fit purchasing them in with my other obligations. This channel is great, a literal wealth of knowledge.

I think the advice about what games you play is really underrated. When I first built my PC I THOUGHT I was going to play all the triple A games, but I just ended up playing indie games or MOBAs. Really take a moment to understand what your use case is.

I recently changed from a i7 2600 to a r7 5800x, big difference, but can't say that my i7 wans't able to run the latest games, it just wasnt as smooth, is incredible how hardware somehow stay relevant throught the years.

I feel like I picked a pretty good time to build my first one. I've been getting tons of praise for what I put together for my first build at the price I paid. I'm thrilled with it and will only learn more and more to make an even more educated buy next time from all the new PC communities I'm finding like this one!!

U goddamn right with a 10 year lifespan for a system. Recently upgraded from i7-2600 8GB 1333 GTX 550Ti to R5-5600x 32GB 3600 RTX 3070 for under 1000€ and I think this will serve me for the next 10 years

I think your advice is spot on! Bravo, and thank you for saying it. I've been using computers for over 40 years (first one was TRS-80 model I), and I've built my share. I've decided an Eluktronics Prometheus XVII, 5800H, 3080, 16GB, 1TB NVMe is the best for me. I've also parted up a Home Server recently for $550, and it's no slouch...5600G, AsRock A520-ITX/ac, SN570 1TB NVME, 32GB 10ns access 3200 PC4 DRAM, Core V1 case, EVGA 500W 80+Gold. I start with Passmark CPU Value chart usually, and the 5600G is stuck near the top consistently...the best price/performance with a built in GPU (Vega 7?) you can get. If I were building a gaming PC, I'd use a 5600 or 5600X. One thing I'd love someone (you, Linus, GN, etc) do is branch out into other-purpose PCs than games. I've seen Linus build servers, but they're huge and I cringe when I see what he chooses to build. I cringed on your recent build too, like when you had to replace drives. I'd love to see a home server, DIY NAS, home security server (w/ and w/out video capture), as well as small- or medium-sized business servers, like a ProLiant DL380 size server. But, that might be a lot to take on. You are in a better position to do it, because you like to give sound advice to new builders, and you know the uber builder scene as well. This video is a perfect example. You're giving good advice without any condescension in your voice. That's huge.

I am going to be honest. Branching out really into building servers is really not worth it other then a video every once in a great while because the hardware and design are not the same. When you start talking about true servers like a dl380 (I remember the gen 1 and 2s back when they were Compaq. I loved those boxes. So much better the the HP monsters and the IBM Xservers back then. Amazing how quickly both changes their design to match them), you are talking about a different level in computing. Building a home server with desktop equipment is cheap and easy. There is no special requirements to build a system to run as a nas or a home server. You just need to have the power for it to do what you want it to do. Building a server to match a backend system like the dl380 or a 3650/3850 (lenovo servers on that level) is on a different price level and outside of the vast majority of home user's wants or needs.

Awesome video, I just decided to upgrade my gpu,cpu and ram..I did tons of research beforehand..upwards of 10-15 hours of videos and forums etc to figure out what i should buy and you basically just told me everything i learned in a 20 minute video!

Honestly so pleased we have Jay in the computer/gaming/build world, everything in media or gaming worlds is always pushing the premise of "You need these high end products to stay relevant" the newer builders definitely need the insight of good products within a budget and not think their dreams are unatttainable based on cost factor even for someone who doesnt game, i have an interest in computers and slowly trying to upgrade what i have for the photography business ive been running for the last 12 months, i still have to do most of my editing on a laptop cause of budget. so this outlook of you dont need the very best is pleasing to see for the upcoming generation

They all use click baity titles and stuff to get views, but he ain't recommending no threadripper to any consumer PC builder, but he can't just make videos to only be viewed by .01% of the PC hardware consumers.

For a home build. A 3060ti, 5600x, 650watt psu, any b450 mobo, 3000 generic ram, sata ssd, and you have a pretty solid build for under 1000 bucks that you can game on in high fps in 1080, and for photo editing and it will do a fantastic job (overkill actually) but you'll be set for a very long time.

Thanks man. I've been wanting to build my first PC ever for a few years now. I was financially capable just as the prices blew up. Then I hurt my back and have been stuck at home killing my savings wondering what I'm gonna do for a living next. Watching you has convinced me I wanna learn computer science and build computer systems. I'm currently trying out console streaming, and suck at it. But I'm have been exploring my options to get a computer science education and start a new career. I used to be a truck driver by the way, so the change is pretty big for me. Anyways, my whole point is that I was trying to figure out the cheapest build I can do to get a good console stream and also be able to play AAA games at 1080p high settings. I play on an Xbox series x that I was lucky to buy at msrp a year ago, but wish to play some Sony titles that are releasing on pc finally. Again, back to the point. Your video today just brought me back to my senses. I just can't afford to join the pc world right now. Even at the low end. I hope to find some training and a nw career soon. Walmart has an HP Pavilion with a 3060 for $650 right now with mouse and keyboard included. There's not many options for future upgrades but just the graphics card alone cost $400 and you're getting everything but a monitor. I just built my 1st pc and here are the specs. 5600 CPU, Intel m.2 1Tb ssd Hd, 550 Pro motherboard, 3060 Gpu, case, 3 fans, 16gb 3200 hz ram, 750 watt PS and a new 24" 144 FPS gaming monitor for around $1200 and it has no problem keeping up with whatever I want to play. Mainly play Apex and I probably average 130-140 FPS and that is with OBS streaming and a couple of other programs running. I couldn't be happier with what I chose. Hope this helps!

For now, my living expenses have been prioritized over this kind of purchase right now. As soon I get back to making an income and accumulate the funds, I will be joining the pc community. I am still using the first PC I built in 2010! Yes i've upgraded a few parts over that time (new fans, new PSU, more ram, couple of dfferent gfx cards) but the bones of the PC is still the same - 1090t, m5a97 pro and 16gb ddr3. I'm only just now starting to put together a new build because its starting to struggle with ACC and MSFS, both CPU intensive sims. 12 years is not a bad innings at all for a PC, it has served me very well.

Amazing video. So rare to see someone talks about financial side of story. Games we play, how long we plan to play before new upgrade is required, amazing. Great work man!

Hi, Jay! I just built my first computer this week and your videos helped a lot. Got a little stuck plugging the front connectors to the motherboard but I got through it! I bought an i3-12100 because I haven’t decided what GPU I want yet but I’m already using it for work and some gaming (very light games). Thanks for all the good advise! I'm putting together a budget 1080p gaming system this week around the i3-12100F, my GPU choice is the RX6600. If you're playing in 1080p, and on a budget, this card can be had for $250 USD or less, and offers really good 1080p performance. It's also very power efficient. I'm upgrading from a AMD FX-4300 based system, so this is going to be massive for me. I think the FX-4300 came out around 2012... so basically a potato nowadays. Waiting for my PSU, and then I'm off to the races. I built my first system over 20 years ago, and have built many systems for friends/family, and the sense of accomplishment when you're done never gets old! Happy building! Enjoy your new rig!

Thx Jay! I was debating on what components to buy and almost bought a $1.5K rig for playing Minecraft and Valorant😅. After applying your advice I toned it down, found some deals, and payed $800 for a rig worth ~$1.2K! Now I’m rocking a Red Devil 6600 XT at 97% usage with shader mods on Minecraft.

Now that you have a gaming PC, it opens the doors for being able to play new games you couldn't run before, and sooner or later you'll end up buying 1.5k in components lmao

Im in the 1st build and my 1st component was bought Tthe black Friday b4 pandemic, MB, M.2, and Ryzen 5 2600x chip and the rx580 gpu but got the email runaround after a month of waiting for delivery that said there were delays and got the same for about 3 mos. until it was cancelled and my $ was returned, waited for gpu prices to stable out until this past black Friday and my build continued, 32gb ram, rx6800 also 1440p 160 hz ultrawide monitor and just finished build a week ago, in the yrs that I was in limbo I completed a 2 ch desktop audio system, desk, 4k TV wall mounted above the pc monitor..so my setup took a while to finish but I'm very happy wih the finished setup and it feels a greater feeling of acomplishment doing the build yourself! I would give this advice to a 1st time builder...Just have patience and do your homework so you get the sytem that you want for good value and have a good time researching what components you want with great channels out there like this one and others,

Good information in this video. ddr4 b die is still pretty pricey compared to all the hynix and micron sticks and cost becomes relative. I was trying to build a ddr4 rig and ddr5 hynix m die ended up being the cheaper option compared to dual rank ddr4 b die for the more aesthetic choices of ram. None of that matters to most consumers, especially if they don't care about rgb and just buy the cheapest b die like the no rgb patriot sticks but, it's something to think about.

Awesome content as always and great timing. I’ve been waiting for all the new stuff to drop and as a first time builder it’s overwhelming! All I’ve got confirmed at the moment is case, M&KB, fans and cooler. I unfortunately fall into the category of being stuck on buying top of the line stuff even if it isn’t necessary and doesn’t really add much performance. I only play Warzone and yes, sweat profusely. My goal is 200+ fps in 1440p. Picking parts is even more difficult not only due to all the new PC stuff coming but warzone 2 is also on the horizon, here’s hoping for better optimisation and maybe my goals will be surpassed

I got the PSU, Case, and RAMs, and honestly, I think RM1000x might not be enough to run an RTX 3080/7900 XT. Though, I'd be going 1440P 144Hz, so I guess even a 4070/7700 XT should suffice. Case is TD500 Crystal. Rams are DDR4 3600 MT/s CL18 Viper RGB by Patriot. Plan is to go 12/13 700k cooled with a Deepcool LS720. That should last for 10 years, give or take.

It's weird to look back at how much I upgraded my system over the years. My first PC back in 2005 lasted me close to 10 years and the only upgrade ever made to it was switching from integrated graphics to a hand me down Geforce 9300 GT. come 2014 I finally had money to build my own system with a 4690k and still had the 9300 GT. in 2015 I upgraded to a 750ti. From there it was a cluster of back and forth upgrades over the last 7 years. From the 4690k to a 7700K to a 8700k to a 9900k to a 10900k. When I got the 7700k I got a 980ti then a year later bought a second one for SLI. with a little hardship in the middle there I missed out on the 10 series which I'm not really upset by. About a year before the 30 series launched and shortly after I got my 9900k I went out and bought a 2070 Super. Once I got my next paycheck later that week I went back to Micro Center and exchanged it for a 2080ti. Now 3 years later I got my hands on a 3090 after the price drop. As I watched this video I made me realize that I just stopped upgrading my CPU. I think more so I got sick of upgrading my MB with it. I can definitely see that I haven't really had a reason to. Obviously I've upgraded Ram along the way between DDR2, 3, and 4. Not really looking forward having to upgrade to DDR5 in the next couple of years. Moral of all this honestly is to say that videos like this are even beneficial to us enthusiasts who upgrade all the time. Sometimes it's necessary to get some perspective thrown into your face. Unless the 3090 gets super out classed with the 4090 or even the 5090? I don't see myself needing to upgrade anytime soon. CPU, MB, and RAM won't probably be for another year or two at least. It's nice to actually sit back and think that I can, even happily, stop spending money on my gaming rig. My server and hopefully soon to be portable rig are an entirely different story.

When I first got a PC about 5 or 6 years ago which was given to me, most of the games I played ran around 10 to 20 fps. Bought myself my first gaming PC, and most of the same games that I played on my old PC run around 60 fps

Good topic and advice Jay, there will be so much hype soon on the new hardware and what it will do... but bottom line is exactly where you started... what games do you play and what monitor do you own or will upgrade too.... that is SPOT on.. the rest will fall into place as you explained.

You are correct sir! When I built my first PC the hardest thing for me to shop for was the simplest; the case. There are so many companies making them, each having several models. I narrowed it to gaming cases with good air flow. Take your time and do your homework. It will be worth it.

Just don't fall into the hype and over spend on things.. choose what resolution you want, choose what games you like to play or will play, think about what you want your pc to be, games and browsing or hard core video editing software. Then get a budget lined up and stick to it! Pick team amd or intel, you do not need a smoking hot CPU for just gaming, anything new from intel or amd will be more then enough and don't get hyped up thinking you need some 12900 or 5900 to game at 1440p or even 4k. Get a motherboard thst you like and has good audio and usbs and at least 3 m.2. Pick a GPU that fits your budget and what you need it to do, brands don't matter much here and get cheaper one or think about cheaping out of fans or a cooler or case and put the saved money into a next tier up GPU.. get a 19 dollar cooler that will fit your MB and cpu, don't pee away all you money on a liquid cooler unless you have money to burn! pick memory 16 gigs min at 3200 cl14 or 3600 cl16, I saw a kit for 57 bucks, don't spend too much as saved money here can be put into more storage space and that's more important imo.. look for cheaper storage M.2 gen 3 only, 1 tb should be about 78 to 95 bucks, don't fall for the hype of gen 4 or anything. Then pick a case rated on gamer nexus channel for air flow and quality and once again, get a cheapy one now if that will help pay for better gpu, cpu, storage! Add up how many watts the system will pull and look at a psu, you will see them rated for quality on some fourm, I forget the name. Do not over spend on it, you can get colored cables for 20 bucks, you do not need anything better then gold rated.. pc parts seem complicated when starting out, but once you learn a bit it's easy and you don't want to learn you built a POS pc. Lol. I recommend a channel called PC builder, he just put together a nice vid of a few cheaper, but nice pc builds from 600 to 1500 bucks. He also goes over the don't and do's to build a pc. Good luck and don't get screwed to the tech hype!

Might want to double-check your statement 15:20 that Intel 13th gen will be "DDR5 only". At least, an Intel 13th gen CPU is pin-compatible & will still work with a 12th gen DDR4 motherboard.

That comment did not age well. Intel never said anything of the sort, and now for 13/14 both DDR4 and DDR5 are compatible. Do you also know that 12, 13 and 14 are fully compatible with Win 10?

Yeah, I am still perfectly happy with my rig. Consider it to be pretty nice. R5 2600, rx 5700xt, 32gb ram, ssd, m.2, and hdd about 2tb of space total. Rock a 1440p 27in curved VA panel. I do have a aio on the cpu. Never have had any real issues with any game that I play. It runs even star citizen well.

Absolutely right, Jay. It’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole. You don’t need to have the latest and greatest to have a great time.

I'm building my first right now and it's a monster. Waiting on fittings since I sent back the 16mm ones and realized the bending radius is too large (I went through an entire box and got two usable tubes out of it). In any case I'm using this rig for Unreal and Blender rendering so I went high end: Corsair 7000X/D case, Asus 3090ti with Phanteks waterblock, Ryzen 5950X, 128gb/3600 Ram, Asus Dark Hero 8 mobo, 2x Samsung 980 pro 2TB M.2's Antec 1300 watts and EK/Phanteks/Primochill custom loop. I went with the highest end everything, even got a couple 20TB HDD's with space for more. I'm about $6K deep after some serious bargain hunting, I only paid $200 for the M.2's but the RAM was $700. A year ago this computer would cost $15,000. If your watercooling then the stuff coming out in a few months won't matter if you can't get waterblocks for anything. I'll do a 7950X 3D/4090ti rig in a couple years when blocks are available and I'll need a second work horse. New tech coming out doesn't mean current gen is a paper weight. My build is one of the most powerful computers you can buy today, that;s going to change very little a year from now. If a current build can beat up Blender and Davinci now it will still be the case years from now.

friendly advice ddr5 on intel z690 is really bad unstable big stability and memory errors, I hope x670 will have learned from intel but until people start reviewing and posting about how ddr5 works on it I would not look at a ddr5 system, its complete beta test currently it would not survive military testing ;)

I’m building for myself after 10 years of rocking my old build. Good ole gen 4 intel i5 and gtx 760 served me well. I won’t be going for the new new gen but I’m building on the z590 chipset and I’m excited.

You touched on something that I have never really thought of Jay. I like you also am an auto enthusiast. My last car built was an s13 with a 6 liter ls engine boosted. I drove it maybe 10 times and if those ten most were to the dyno to tune for more boost. I do use my PC more for gaming now days because I have time, but all these high end parts are wasted in me when I could care less about seeing nice shadows and light rays. Its about the build, then its boring when it cant be better. Thanks for making me feel bad lol...

I love building a PC at the end of a RAM generation. My old build was a 4790k build, and I only upgraded because the ram & motherboard scarcity meant I could part out my old mobo + RAM + CPU & upgrade to a R5 3600 for £20. This time I'm looking to upgrade my 3600 to a 5900x once the next gen drops & go from a GTX1060 to a 3070ti/3080 (I use cuda for work otherwise that'd be AMD too). This black friday is going to be wild

@Roenie I agree @ code. GTA5 has been out for almost a decade, but I've watched tests max out at ~90fps even with the nVidia 80s+ series. Mainly only competition games can hit the 144fps+ range or the rare game that was optimize amazingly. However, your setup may not be limited by your CPU, but it is limited by the ram speed; that's your current bottleneck.

@Roenie My 4790k was still good at running modern games but the 1% lows started to get a bit more noticeable, even if the CPU isn't at 100%. Not every game is perfectly optimized, sure, but the faster DDR4 RAM and newer core architectures definitely make a difference.

You’ve saved my build. I had no idea 13th gen doesn’t run with ddr4. Gonna return it tomorrow and get the 12th gen one. This also gonna save a good amount of money as well.

Hope you learned a valuable lesson. The 13 was a good leap over a 12, and both a 13 and 14 will run DDR4 and DDR5. Intel never stated otherwise. Never listen to the rumour mill. You missed out on a good CPU because of rumours.

this video is so underrated, we need this! per what you recommend, would you also do a parts guide for the outgoing and for the new gen?

Spot on with the longevity points. My i7 920 just hit the point where it doesn’t have a specific instruction set to play certain tittles. Been running since 2009.

Decided to go with an upper mid-range am4 build, ryzen 7 7800x3d, a rtx 3060ti, nvme 4tb with 4tb ssd back up, noctua cooler, 32 gb vulcan ddr4 3600 All in a be quiet 500dx for 1440 gaming, photo editing and some video editing. You're guidance, along with nexus gamers and ltt, has been sooo helpful. Thanks dude!

The most important thing about a PC build for me is that each iteration must retain at least one thing that the previous iteration included, like the Ship of Theseus/Grandfather's axe. Even though none of the parts now remain of my first build (the last things to go were probably some old SATA cables and the DVD RW drive), philosophically my current PC cam trace its form back to that first PC I built 20 years ago. It does mean your build is always behind in some ways but ahead in others but it keeps the philosophy of the original - form is second to function, the spec must allow for future expansion, you shall not expand to the point where nothing of the previous iteration is retained, but you shan't be sentimental about replacing any part. The choices you make on that first build have quite an influence on how your PC grows and changes over time.

I am actually still using a 7200rpm Western Digital Black from back when 1TB was sort of considered excessive by most gamers... I use it for storage, mostly, but I do still run a few games off of it, and it ...still works... so something like 2012? I also have a working Seagate Barricuda 500GB drive from 2009... that's probably the most ancient part I still occasionally access. It's impressive, really... the drive from 2008 or whenever does make a bit of noise, though. Just enough to make me think it's capable of bursting into flames. Probably a good idea to lay them to rest some time before that happens....

Great advice Jay, you are absolutely correct in your advice on upgrading vs not, and how you current gen system is not obsolete just because the new gen is released. My mentor that got me started in computer repair and building gave me similar advise that I still live by "Don't try to keep up with technology, you will go broke trying". To me that is still as valid today as when he told me that back in the 90's.

It's like my pc which doesn't really need an upgrade for 1080p because I currently have got r5 5600x, 16gb ram 3600MHz CL17 dual channel kit and msi rtx 2060 super gp oc and I play in 1080p on 1080p 144Hz 1ms monitor. There are only two games I play which are hard to run, cyberpunk 2077 on high settings and ray tracing and warzone in loading screens where it sometimes stays a lot because of the 15.5-15.7gb occupied from 16. My pc has got only ssds, kingston a2000 500gb and patriot burst 960gb. It's true I play on the highest settings, dxr and dlss balanced, but there are no stutters or fps drops in the match. The next upgrade will be 32gb dual channel kit from corsair and the reason for this brand is icue. Now I'm waiting for corsair icue h115i elite capellix and 3 sp140. The case is be quiet pure base 500dx which will be connected to the commander core with an adapter cable because it will be exactly like an argb led strip.

will build mine soon. im always interested in the last gen, due to stability, so new stuff is not at all interesting for me personally. which means, this is great time for me since sales might be coming. I started collecting parts in april/may, picking up whatever i can find on sales/offers. only a couple of pieces to go now!!

I’ve been recently disabled, so have had to look at what I have as entertainment option that are fine while being mostly confined to bed. I am slowly gathering some parts for a gaming pc that I can afford on my pension budget. So I have gone with an AMD 5600x on a special, A thermaltake case, thermaltske 240 aio, Samsung ssd, these were all on heavy discount. I still have to save up for RAM and a mother board, I have picked out some RAM and waiting for a special, and a Asus B550 mobo. I have an old 1060 that will do for now, and will visit graphics at a later date. Thanks to your channel I feel confident in putting it together myself, just need to get those last couple of parts before I can start putting it all together

Great video for the new PC builder. This is why I love Jay... says what it is 😁 I'm still on my 9 year old i7-4790K/32GB soon to upgrade GPU with an AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT. For months I'd be planning for a new PC replacement to either an Intel Core i9-12900K or AMD Ryzen 9 5900X. But fortunately, my 4th-gen Intel system still caters for both my work and gaming needs.

Even though I've built over 100 PC's it's still a good idea to cover the basics. Thanks Jay and crew.

Any advise on average price to build a good gaming pc for a 3090 ti or even 4090 still unsure but graphics is mostly what matters to me not really a competitive game or a streamer haha

I built my first pc this spring and got a 5600x and a 3050 and it works great. No complaints so far. runs games perfectly fine. I planned on upgrading the gpu to a 4070 when they come out but now I think I might just wait a while. I don't think I really need it

New to building PCs here. My aim is to purchase parts and build a PC that will last me for the next 7 years and allow me to experience 4k graphics for movies on 1 monitor and 240hz, 1msrt on another monitor for games like valorant, overwatch and COD. I know a 3070 will do the job but for the setup to last me the next 7 years comfortably Im happy to chuck an extra $300-$400 to keep the longevity alive. Still researching and watching these and other similar videos to gather more valid points and opinions.

Thanks Jay - appreciate this info! I think I am going to take the plunge on this Ryzen 7000. I have an 8700k - while it's fine for the gaming I do, I do think I'm finally ready to upgrade the CPU to match my GPU (6800XT).

Just get a good cooler and OC the 8700k. Don't waste your money, especially if you game at 1440p or higher.

Fair warning: 1) New CPU architecture (also new socket for AMD) 2) New chipset 3) New DDR5 standard 4) New PCIe5 standard People forging ahead usually forget that it's only 1 and 2 most of the time. This generation will be 1, 2, 3, and 4. There will be BIOS problems, there will be driver problems, it will take time to fix them. That's months, or even over a year. Know the spaghetti blame game that hardware vendors will be tossing around. Know you will definitely need to flash new BIOS, maybe to the GPU also. If you're willing to do battle then do the build. If not then wait till 2024 for Zen5, or Intel's first chiplet based CPU, 14th gen. Additionally special ATX 3.0 power connectors that offer extra communication cables and plugs are just about to become the new standard as well.

@@Mr.Morden Im sorry what? PCIe5 won't be causing any issues. PCIe 4 didn't when it came out, i don't see why 5 would. Also DDR5 is already in use and is not causing any problems either. A new socket (for AMD) won't be causing any issues either. And if you think chipsets and CPu issues will plague 13th gen intel as well as zen4 then the same issues will happen for 14th gen intel and zen5. So i don't get why waiting for 14th gen and zen5 is better here with your thought process.

I upgraded from a laptop with an i7 7700HQ & gtx 1050 mobile to a $160 pc with an i5 6400 and a gtx 1060 3gb. (Motherboard and CPU upgrade on the way though lol) Most PC gamers probably wouldn’t think much of it, but it’s a massive upgrade for me. Being realistic with your budget and your goals makes decision making a lot easier.

@@leruty Yes, I know that but there were other benefits I didn’t mention. Switching to a desktop cleaned up my setup, had *significantly* better thermals, and gave me a reasonable upgrade path. I was rarely bottlenecked by the i7 or the i5 with what I was playing anyway.

Hey Jay, I would love to hear you talk about picking parts for a work station. I know the line has blurred a lot, but I'm assuming you can still optimize a system for, say audio production, vs gaming. I would love to hear what hardware different productivity software benefit from most; like Premiere, Pro tools, etc. I tried doing my own research, but only found really vague answers. Like "this software is cpu heavy", or "a high end gpu would help a lot". Do they benefit most from clock speed or high core count? What about ram? Does ram speed matter more than gaming? On a low budget would a work station look exactly the same as a gaming rig? I would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks!

its bcs the better, the more convenient your work will be, we cant just suggest 7900x out of nowhere

I just completed my new Corsair/MSI build. Looks great but one thing I wish I would have done was bought my MD and processor as a bundle (if available). Waiting for the different components to go on sale at the same time, in the flavor you want/need, is a long waiting game. This is also going to be your biggest expense. Make sure you budget early for this. Most everything else will cost less and can be bought at convenient steps. Don't skimp on the power supply! If tou spec out to just needing a 750W PSU, go for the next step up. Your experience with performance will thank you. Also, try and go for the Gold or higher on the rating. Higher effiency == less heat => better pereformance.

All solid advice for us long haulers. I've finally relented to upgrade my 13 year old i7-950 system (with 1060 3GB upgrade) to a Ryzen 5600 system with a 6800XT this week. It could still run NMS at 1080p 60-90 fps, but wanted to go 1440p with newer games. Feel like this will last another 10+ years maybe with a GPU upgrade later. If I had advice for others like myself in the 1440p around $1,500 range... - Go for B550 board. You don't need the PCIe 4.0 storage drive speed yet, but nice to have later. A PCIe 3.0 M.2 will work fine for now. - Get the 5600 since it's $40 cheaper than 5600X right now, and a budget air cooler will work just fine. - Get a 2 stick RAM kit to leave upgrade path open, and 16GB 3200 CL16 RAM is good enough. - Prioritize M.2 storage as OS/main drive with a 2.5" SATA drive as backup or Steam folder storage option (it doesn't take that much longer to load). *Bonus: Keep your PC on your desk. Most dirt in the air comes from the floor, and keeping it in sight will make you clean it more often. I once dropped my gaming CPU temp from 90C to 60C just by cleaning the fuzzball off the stock cooler (which 13 years later is still going). Last, if the GPU crash does come when miners flood the used market, so will lot's of people building systems, meaning prices for all the other components might go back up or become unavailable. I would at least get all your other parts soon.

I am finally retiring my i7-4790k and 1070Ti. With prices coming back to normal and new stuff coming out, it felt like a great time to upgrade. Granted I never buy the newest gear, but I do want to be relevant for a decent amount of time. I went with a i7-11700K and a 3080Ti. I originally just bought the motherboard and processor since it was a good deal, but decided to go ahead and pick up the RAM and power supply to go ahead and get it running so I don't run into issues with a bad part I bought 6 months ago and can't return. Then I got a good deal on the 3080Ti, so I went ahead and bit the bullet for it also. I will build in my current tower, an old Corsair Vengeance C70, but will eventually upgrade to a Corsair 5000D Airflow in white as this will be my first "white" build. Then the usual odds and ends like a new AIO and fans. It seems like there is a narrow window in which to buy older gear when it is being liquidated but before it becomes "rare" and suddenly valued at 5 times the price. So far I think I did pretty well. I could have saved a few more bucks on the motherboard and CPU, but I made up for it with the 3080Ti for $800.

What's nice in having a good case is it lasts literally years. Especially anything in the past 2 years with a mesh front will last a long time. So you save that money and on fans when you upgrade.

I wish more reviewers would start to make noise normalized performance comparisons with GPU models, cause if you are not putting your PC in another room or wear closed/ANC headphones, you may not want a GPU running at 300-400W within 2 meters of you. For example, 3090 & 3080 have noticeably better peak performance than 3070, but unlike many other techs in life. 3070 has better performance per watt than 3080. So if you are only willing to endure a certain amount of fan noise(even the 3070 can be plenty loud under full load when it's within 2 meters of you), 3070 may be a better GPU for you regardless of the price.

Amazing video! Just started building my PC not even a month ago for the first time in 10 years! .... I'm going from an FX-8320 and a Radeon HD 7950 with only mechanical drives and 8gb of RAM right into a 5800X and a 3080 12gb (non-ti) which I just bought yesterday and will have it by the end of the month in my country, with a 1TB 980 pro and 32 gb of 3600 mhz RAM and let me say that I'm very excited... Most of what I bought I did based on many of your recommendations and I truly couldn't be happier while very well knowing what's almost around the corner regarding next gen. Where I live this kind of PC is an extreme luxury, but it will certainly help with work and my lifetime hobby which is gaming. Thank you for all your insight. Edit: If anybody is wondering, the PC is a full replacement. New PSU to account for the newer power draw, new case for more modern space and cable management, welcoming rgb (though I was hesitant at first about the rgb). In fact, I'm writing this from the new PC, just waiting for the GPU to arrive while rocking a borrowed GTX 970 and even with this GPU the PC runs like a dream come true.

I’m one of those 1st time builders. Great vid with great advice. My main use will be for running and streaming Zwift races. So with that in mind an i3 10100 with GTX 1660s, 8gb DDDR4 and a small M.2 with a few vans on an MSI B460 Tomahawk and I’ve got what I need for around €500 - & honestly great results have been achieved by others that just want to use it for Zwift specifically for even €300 using i3 4th gen. So basically cut your cloth to suit your measure 🤷‍♂️

There's only a couple of things that I would add to this. First one is to make sure your PSU has enough watts plus a 100, or 200, over head in case you decide to upgrade later. The second one is to make sure that there's ample cooling in your system. You're not going to get the most out of your CPU and GPU if they're running too hot. They have built in measures where the performance is lowered to ensure they don't burn up. Having said that, it's not that expensive. My rule of thumb is 3 inflow and 3 outflow. But, you can get away (depending on where you live and your a/c situation) with just 2 inflow and 2 outflow.

^^^This! Just ordered a 850w Super Flower PSU (manufacturer of some popular EVGA PSU, great deal) because I didn't go big enough to begin with. Initially was running a Ryzen 3600 and GTX 1650 (all I could find new at the beginning of the GPU shortage) so bought a 500w PSU. Then I upgraded to a water cooled 1080 ti with eyes toward 30xx or 6xx0 series GPUs. Gonna need a WHOLE lot more power than 500w just to overclock what I'm currently running. Buy enough PSU from the start and it'll last a loooooong time

@@mysweetshadow747 I used to recommend around 500-600w for medium range build ($800-1000), but now things are starting to require a lot more power. PCPartPicker has a feature that gives an estimation of how much your minimum wattage should be for your build. It doesn't account for any overclocking and possible upgrades. So, I still say, if you can afford it, give yourself plenty of room. If you're system only needs 500w, it's only going to pull that much even if you have a 850w PSU. So you're not pulling/wasting that extra 200-300w. It's just a good buffer to have.

Not necessarily for overhead for upgrading, but also so that you can take advantage of its 80Plus efficiency. Last thing you want is to upgrade two or three gens up and all of a sudden your power efficiency gets pegged, even if you aren't necessarily capping on your PSU wattage.

a 100 is barely enough for spikes...200 better

it's been confusing for me these past couple weeks, learning all the parts to make a good Gaming PC and finding good deals with stuff that will work together. However I still messed up and bought the wrong motherboard for my Ryzen 5 7600X. I canceled the ordered and ordered a new one then realized the new motherboard only uses DDR5, so I had to cancel my DDR4 RAM and get DDR5 RAM. I am upgrading from a 1080 to 3070 ti, and will upgrade from a 1080 monitor to a 1440 later down the road.

I’m building my second system. The first one I built was for my wife, 5600x and a 3080 10gb. My system will be a 6800xt with a 5700x. I was this 🤏🏻close to going am5 but the last Gen stuff was too cheap to pass up iMO… especially after waiting almost 3 years to build one.

I just threw some random stuff into PC part picker, sent the list to my friends and had each one modify it. I took all of their inputs and did one last chop for myself. $2000 budget, got it down to $1800 after monitors, peripherals and everything.

I’m going to build my first PC on the next month so this is really really helpful, thanks a lot!! 😃👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Rocking an i7 7700k + RTX3070 here - might sound like a weird combo due to the age difference but it works great! Stuff like cyberpunk and hitman run just fine, and it being an 11.5L mini-itx build (SG13 case) is just the cherry on top for me - although I did have to do a bit of metalwork to cram the RTX3070 dual in ;)

You're bottlenecking that RTX 3070, not a lot but you should pick up a cheap 5600x/5800x sometime later.

@@owlmostdead9492 primary Ethernet and WiFi for generalised internet, secondary Ethernet bridged with WiFi second channel for a routed lan that I can connect both WiFi and Ethernet devices to for debugging and localised comms - embedded is fun sometimes :D Sure, I could do much the same with a managed switch and an access point, but I don't have one at the moment and don't particularly want to get them when my computer can do it all by itself

@@triffid0hunter Eh kind of a suboptimal setup you have there, just waiting for headaches here. I was about to suggest a managed switch but I wasn't sure if it was applicable to your workflow, honestly just get one. Good ones are like 50 bucks and trust me they are way more reliable than random Windows updates F'ing up settings and configs, in fields like pentesting you'd be risking your home network with that kind of setup since it's not 'properly' isolated.

While my intention is to jump in on the new 7000 series CPU and GPU for an all AMD build, I am certainly still keeping an eye on the outgoing 5000 series CPUs and 6000 series GPUs. Depending how prices shape up and how performances stack up early on, I may be swayed to go with the outgoing tech. All depends how everything falls into place.

Walmart has an HP Pavilion with a 3060 for $650 right now with mouse and keyboard included. There's not many options for future upgrades but just the graphics card alone cost $400 and you're getting everything but a monitor. I couldn´t watch this before buying my pc this month but i watched older videos from him and im gald I didnt make any mistake he mentioned. At first trying to future prove my pc showed me that was not the smart way to buy. Now im happy with my new 5600x and 6650xt that i bought from saving from other components.

I'm about to upgrade from a Ryzen 3 1300x with a 1060 3GT OC and 16 GB of DDR4-2400 and these recommendations fit right in with what I want to build. Great video, Jay.

IM READY IM SOOOO READY .... but my wallet isn't ... ;p .. from other side .. i would like to see Jay make a hardware guide like that but with shift focus ... not all about games .. but about stuff like adobe photoshop / illustrator .. that would be something cool and fresh to see coming out from Jay

I totally agree. I do NOT PLAY GAMES. I do graphic design and scrapbooking. I use Photoshop and MS Paint. The only major game I have on my (now very) old system is Rocket League!! If I upgrade, i will need to spend more on storage to hold all the scrapbooking graphics that I purchase, than the CPU/speed/graphics - although a good graphics card is still required. A PC build Video for a NON GAMING PC would be very Helpful!!!!

I mean for anything like that pretty much just swap out the gaming GPU for a workstation GPU (better for rendering, etc.) and you should be fine lol (might want to lean towards a slightly better CPU than you would for most games too)

Best advice is most people don't need more than a 5600X/3060 build tbh.

What I have not found is a video for first time buyers that helps with peripherals. This channel is amazing at helping find the right pc build for you personally with prices to match. Having just built my first pc in over 15 years I had no idea how much peripherals have changed. Please make a video on best bang for your buck mouse (gaming and extra features). Keyboards!!! ( how many features and options are out there and nobody to tell me if any of ot matters.) And monitors...specifically are you going to play 1080p,1440, or 4k. If so do you want high refresh or not on each level. These combos matter. A completely new build with pc and all that runs 120hz 1080p is a completely difference price level from a new setup running 4k 200hz. Every part from monitors to gpus change by hundreds of dollars. I myself wanted high refresh 1440p gaming. Yet I could not find where I should land on cpu, gpu, or monitor. It was very frustrating. Every video is good budget pc or best of the best.

New to your channel, really appreciate all the information you share to the new builders! Haven’t built a new system in like 20 years. Off topic though, is that a Cecilio electric Cello in the background? I have one as well!
