I Wore a $500 and a $500,000 Watch... Which One Did I Like More?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I have two watches. One, a Furlan Marri chronograph. It costs $500. It looks very smart, feels great, works like a charm. If you’re new to watches, then, you might be wondering how the very similar A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon could possibly cost an incredible 660 times more. We’re going to take a look at what they’re made of, how they’re made and what they do¬-to find out.
Featured Watches:
Furlan Marri Havana Salmon Ref.1031-A
A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon

Superlative video as always. I have been collecting watches since the 50´s ( I am an old man of the Third World) . In the late 50´s when I got my Hamilton Electric, then the Bulova Accutron, first ETAs quarts and Omega Megaquartz in ther 1970´s I would have never have imagined that mechanical watches that were obsolete in the late 50´s, would have survived until 2022. Earning 100 US dollars a month in my land, it will take hundreds of years to buy it. So, for almost all the world a Lange is a heavenly curiosity. Thanks to technology we stll can buy some watches. Cheers from frozen Patagonia, Argentina.

The ALS is a marvel for sure. I also marvel at the word choice used to describe the differences between the two watches. The ability to maintain interest by the descriptive words chosen without being bogged down in unnecessary pretense is worthy of note and appreciation. That said, a healthy percentage, seeing this ALS in a side-by-side comparison with a Rolex Submariner, would choose the Rolex as the more desirable timepiece. Even as nothing could be farther from reality, the ability to see the difference means requisite knowledge and frame of reference have to be present. Long before I came to love watches, I could not afford I somehow imagined the best look made in the world today would likely be German and not Swiss.

I'm on Lange & Sohne's side just because it doesn't use that damned ubiquitous mechaquartz movement. I was in the market for a budget-friendly chronograph for work last year, and I can't tell you how many of them in the low-to-mid three-figure price range use it. The chrono runs just fine, but the lack of a running second hand is a complete deal-breaker (the utterly superfluous 24-hour dial is no consolation, especially for those of us in the U.S.)

If you think what prices some far lesser brands sometimes command (Richard Mille 🥴, J&Co🤢🤮, many AP RO, many PP Nautilus, Rolex Daytona’s 😵‍💫🤡, etc. etc.). Indeed, PP will ask at least 3x for the same functions but will not be as executed/finished as well; it’s bother brand VC will ask 2x more and also not executed/finished as well; AP will probably not be even able to make it 😜

Is A. Lang & Sohne worth the difference in price? Well, I think it has to do with what kind of statement you'd like to make. I wouldn't question the execution of parts and time it takes to put one of these marvels of time together. Another thing to consider is: how many people would feel comfortable walking around with a $330K watch on their wrist? When we talk about the intrinsic value of its 729 parts, I'd say it's worth the heft price tag. But if all someone wants is simply to have a good-looking watch and is just concerned with having an accurate time piece, then the Furlan Marri will do just fine and then some. Again, what kind of statement do you want to make, and can your pocket afford making that statement.

  • @florianlipp5452

Isn't the user experience of the ALS greatly diminished by being hand wound with just 50h power reserve? I mean, no one uses this watch a a daily beater. Even an Investment Bank CEO wouldn't wear it during the weekends, right? Which means that it would have to be reset fairly often. Which - being a perpetual calender - probably takes some time. Or you have to rewind the watch all the time even when you aren't wearing it.

It looks like a manual movement to me so you'll have to wind frequently anyhow. But I guess that's part of the experience of owning such watches, isn't it? I think they are much less than you might expect on ultra luxury watches such as these. There's a team of people hand finishing components for a long time, so it kinda makes sense that they need to be paid. They are also extremely specialized and skilled experts who cannot be easily replaced and can probably negotiate the hell out of their payment. But in the case of mostly machine made watches (I'm including Rolex here, which is mass produced, unlike ALS which is not) I'm expecting a healthy margin indeed

In the closeup shots of the Furlan Marri, you can see the imperfections. Where as the A. Lange & Söhne is perfect.

German engineering at its best, have they surpassed Swiss ? Like their cars, its a shame, only very few people can truly enjoy the luxury.

It's top of the line engineering for a top of the line product. The cars that are meant for the masses have lots of the parts outsourced to the usual countries nowadays. I'm sure the top of the line cars still retain the famous German quality.

I get it that you guys rate the Furlan Marri, but really it is not a competitor to the ALS watch. Anyone going to look at a $330000 watch is not going to give themselves a pat on the back as they walk out with a $500 watch. You might just as well sum this up as a salmon dial comparison that is nothing more than that. I love your work work nevertheless.

500 euros is too much for the FM.. this watch is bad should cost no more than 200, for 500 you can have SO MUCH better ! considering grey market too

Rather get a seagull chronograph. You get a column wheel, a swan neck regulator, AND have change from the 500.

@@adamw.7169 good argument but the reliability and inability to get them service made seagulls a one way street for me. That micro rotor Baltic was so tempting other than the seagull movement. Regardless, they’re sold out.

Yeah. But their mission is “attractive wristwatches “, and they are quite attractive in person. Can’t get decent mechanical non modular chrono under 2k (no Chinese made for many reasons), so quartz. Got the Griggio for fun and pretty good looking from every perspective. Cheap eye candy

Although i adore the mechanical complexities of the ALS . any quartz watch will scare the pants off it for accuracy. Its all down to expendable income. I tend to err on the side of accuracy . Mere mortals, financially, will always err on economy over exclusivity. Nice to dream of lottery win finances but.........
