‘I Went From Party Girl To Paralysed & My Life Changed Forever’ | This Morning
Ойын-сауық
It was a split second that changed her life forever. Lauren Doherty was just 20 years old when she stepped in front of a van which resulted in her being catapulted 30 metres through the air and left her paralysed from the neck down, wheelchair-bound and relying on breathing apparatus. Now 36, Lauren has turned her tragedy into a force for good. She and her friend Rebecca join us to discuss their charity - Road Safety Talks - which sees them give hard-hitting talks to school children across the country.

That doesn't surprise me. Half my family is British and Half Irish. I can honestly say looking at mum's family here and in England people who are disabled or old do get treated better in Ireland.

I have had a spinal cord injury too. People often say ‘oh I’d just give up in your position’. But what give up mean? You can just stop doing anything and whither away. Often you won’t get funding for caters 24/7 and unless you have family close by, you will have to do things for yourself . Sure it’s hard to get out of bed in the morning sometimes and lots of days are not productive m, but you have to sometimes change your goals in life and take the small wins. 7:28

What independent life for cries sake, the woman is totally paralyzed and needs a caregiver 24/7 every second of the day for even the simplest of things - going to toilet, eating, drinking, taking a bath...she's more helpless than a newborn baby.

Yes, so when they said she is independent and has her own home, my first thought was she must have a full time caregiver. They should stop misleading others about the extent of her disability.

@valiasa-di6hr, your comment comes across as meanspirited. By the way, she is NOT "totally paralysed". She can move her head, eyes, mouth, and so on. She can talk and communicate her thoughts. By talking to people, especially to children, she is working as a teacher. She is a fully productive member of her community

❤ Bless Lauren for trying to get kids to be road safety aware. 🙏Lauren can get stem cell and/or Neuralink has some new applications and/or some new bionic treatment. I truly believe some brilliant treatments are around the corner.
I hope you have found peace, lady, and some kind of contentment
I wish you well and a speedy recovery, Lauren
I will bever forget a few years ago my brother and I were walking to his flat on new years eve and a guy was hit by a van. It was like slow motion. He flipped in the air and then we heard his body smash onto the road. We don't know if he survived, hopefully so.
Poor lady strength to you sending you much love
I know of Soldiers that have left the club and walked into the road to their doom. Be safe out there, wishing her the best and a continued recovery.

What a transformation!
The poor women wasn’t able to look at the hosts, maybe she should have been facing them or in a circle.
yes i do feel really terrible for her and she is paying the price but also through her silly actions has caused that driver trauma and his life will probably never be the same again after what he saw and did through no fault of his own.

That’s such a negative outlook. Caregivers are the gateway to having a sense of independency. They take you out on outings, they allow you to live in your own home rather than at a facility. She owns her own home that right there is being independent.

Twisted her arm 🙈
Is it just me but what is she doing on the tele?? She by her own admission walked out onto the road whilst under the influence! This is the best example of Karma you'll get. Feel for the driver who may have been mentally traumatized by the incident. Typical TV nowadays if they can get anyone in a wheelchair on a programme or in an advert they'll try their best!
