As a native speaker of Chinese. it is Indeed, I have been learning English for more than 10 years, but I still can't communicate with foreigners very fluently.😂 If I live in the United States for a year, I think my English level will have a qualitative leap. By the time the kids went for a nap, you were speaking faster, pronouncing better (not that I would know) and also sounding more confident. The principal was right that with all the kids around you, you would learn very quickly.

I didn’t think he would use Hokkien when he told his aunt he didn’t understand lol that surprised me out of nowhere 😂 I use both Mandarin and Hokkien cuz I’m from the south of Taiwan (Tainan台南) my mandarin is better than my hokkien but I can still hold a regular conversation in hokkien, it’s just now that I live in the US I don’t have many chances to use to, and the only people I use Hokkien with is my parents and they don’t always speak hokkien, it’s usually a mix of mandarin and hokkien.

I feel like the way he used hokkien for that little bit is the way I use dialect too. I grew up in europe but my parents are from Hangzhou (a city in east china). I can hold a conversation in mandarin, but I also sometimes slip in little bits of hangzhou dialect just cuz I heard it so much growing up
