I Was Wrong About Ghost.

A lot of you have been asking me to do a video on #Ghost. They've just released a new song, so I'll go through it with you here. It's the first time I'll be hearing it. I had heard a song by Ghost before and I wasn't hugely impressed, but I may have been wrong...MAYBE.

I only had one chance to see them live so far. I was so looking forward to it but something happened. I had been so hyped for it for literally months. I'd been listening to Ghost for years and finally I could see them. The concert was 10 days after I turned 30 so it seemed like the perfect birthday celebration gift between me and my girlfriend at the time. Little did I know she was going to do everything she could to fuck up my 30th birthday and my life so unfortunately I never made it to the concert. My life got very difficult and very hopeless for a while with her doing all she could to destroy me mentally. I escaped that relationship and I'm now safe and very happy in comparison! It's horrible how the toxicity or ill intent of an individual can cause them to mislead and harm someone to that extent. She even set up the tickets herself as something to look forward to ruining for me. I'm so glad I escaped that relationship. It was so messed up. Around 4 months clear out of it now. *BUT* I can and WILL go see Ghost Live the next time they do a lap around our unworthy planet! Onwards and upwards folks!!! Stay positive out there ✌️☮️❤️

Im a fan of Ghost not only for some killer songs, but if you go back and follow the story, you see that this started as a side project from a musician who was in a few different groups that were not really breaking out. Tobias is a fan of all sorts of different genres and he put his vision together, tried it out, and had some grassroots success. He stated he never really saw it getting as big as it had. He even stated he wanted to be a guitarist in the band and not the front man. He was working a full time job, had kids to support, but his wife convinced him to go all in on Ghost to make it work. Hats off to him and his wife. It’s also refreshing to see the humor he puts into the story around Ghost through the periodic promotional videos with Nihil, Sister Imperator, and the various Papas and Copia. It carries through to the stage. His banter between songs is pretty damn funny.

Ghost are one of the most wildly misunderstood bands in history. Everyone sees a photo of them and expects some extreme black metal and listens to them and they're much, much lighter and they go "what the hell is this?" and thus thinks they're failing to achieve something rather than just being what they are. But I think it's much better to understand them in more of an Alice Cooper sense than a Mayhem one. There's a lot of camp in there, and Tobias Forge has said he models them on a sort of late 60s-early 70s thing. There's a sort of Hammer Horror thing going on there. Kind of serious and (intentionally) silly at the same time.

Call Me Little Sunshine genuinely helped me cling onto my sanity after the last two years. It's basically telling me that I'm not alone, that I can call out for someone to be by my side. Of course, they've delved into the Satanic vibes for it & Tobias himself has said that the Devil is calling out to you with false hope, making you think he's there for you & not for a good reason, but deep down it's a song about support to those that need it. I don't listen and hear Mephistopheles calling. I hear Papa Emeritus. I hear the reminder that I will always have their music to fall back on when I'm feeling rough.

Tobias doesn’t stretch himself vocally on many studio tracks, but his live cover of Sympathy for the Devil with Hellacopter sees him embrace rock n’ roll a bit more. As for Ghost, Dance Macabre is probably the poppiest thing they’ve ever done - Cirice (and the rest of Meliora) might best exemplify the midpoint between the doomy origins and the current stadium aspiring sound. If you end up doing interviews Tobias would be a great shout - he’s a music fan first and foremost, it’d be a great conversation.

He usually writes and arranges everything, down to every drum beat. The tasty choices seemingly made by the drummer were made by Tobias. He wanted someone else to sing in the band, but when the one he wanted didn't want to join, he decided it should be him.

Great review, Justin! Years back, my intial reaction was completely dismissive of Ghost - when I first saw them with their distinctive costuming and imagery, but hadn't really listened to them. I figured they were likely 'form over function,' possibly hiding inadequacies with 'window dressing,' as is often the case. I was wrong. When I finally gave them a serious listen, then read or listened to multiple interviews with Tobias, I realized they are a talented band with great music, lead by an artist persuing a comprehensive musical and theatrical vision, not unlike some all time greats such as Alice Cooper or Marilyn Manson. Now I enjoy Ghost and definitely have respect for Tobias.

Dance Macabre doesn't really represent Ghost's music as a whole. their first album is more on the metal side, while they're later output started experimenting with a more "antichrist superstar"-hard rock approach drawing inspirations from various decades of rock music to build on the band's lore as an "ages old and larger-than-life" band. dance macabre is kind of an attempt at 80's disco to represent a form of decadent partying while the world is decaying outside, which was an overarching theme of the album Prequelle.

  • @FraserX

@silver goth yeah, I can see why you'd say that. I love both songs. Dance Macabre leans waay more into the disco aspect, hence the Carpenter Brut remix, which just dials that up to 11. When I first heard the original I immediately thought disco, which I'm sure is totally intentional.

No one replied to this comment so I'll try: Tobias Forge, songwriter and front man of ghost has related in interviews that his experiences of Christianity as a child where very traumatic, he had a step mother and elementary school teacher who were very religious and used a lot of threats about the rage of God. Growing into a lyricist and musician he himself thus related much more to the story of Lucifer and he felt more at home with Satan then with Jesus. The satanic themes are sort of skin deep in my opinion though, there are other motifs that are explored much more intricately such as unrequited love, power and the rise and fall of empires. All in all I think a Christian person might find some of the lyrics off putting first but is say that ghost is more critical of the way religion can be used with malicious intent rather than dismissive of Christianity at large. Ghost uses it's blasphemous aura to enhance its theatrics and build community in my opinion

They're incredible live, especially if you're lucky enough to see them in a smaller, more intimate setting. Had the fortune to see them before Meliora released, in a smaller club. Papa's banter is absolutely hilarious, they just ooze cool.

Really enjoyed this video. As a Ghost fan KZread's algorithm directed me here, then the penny dropped mid video and my mind was blown when i realised you were "the fella from The Darkness". Tobias' vocals can vary quite dramatically between albums. If you want to hear him push his vocals give Elizabeth a listen.

DEFINITELY give their Seven Inches of Satanic Panic EP a spin. Mary on a Cross is, in my opinion, Ghost's best song to date.

Wow I have just found out about your KZread Justin. I've been a fan since I first saw you on Jools Holland killing it back at the beginning of The Darkness. Rock on dude, I love your analysis.

I love Ghost... Super talented bunch and yes I totally understand where Justin is coming from with Dance Macabre. I remember hearing that for the first time thinking "Wtf that's not metal!" Then fast forward to the guitar solo then I was like " it really is metal!!!" Very unique to say the least

I’m here in The States; and it’s hard to find musicians that can “hold it back,” as you said and serve the song. No one wants it as bad anymore as maybe the old days. Anyway, Justin you should take on old blues songs that could be fun. Cheers from Ütah.

Justin! Good day, sir! I have been a fan of you and your work for around 20 years now. I just wanted to say thank you for your additions to musical history and future. Currently watching all your videos to catch up…. and packing for a move. Priorities. Just thought I would add to this I got W.A.S.P Widow Maker from the intro. Carry on the good work and stay sound

Justin, I hope you've had a chance by now to go back and listen to Ghost's back catalog. It really is incredible stuff. Brilliant live too.
