It's a simply a case of who did it first. If England did it to Australia, Broady would've taken the road he took with not walking, vice versa obviously he has a problem with it. It's like a penalty in soccer, if your team gets it: great, awesome. If it goes against your team: cheating bastards, bad referees. That said, I like Broady for his legacy of being the villain. He's one of the few England cricketers I will ever miss being up against, a great cricketer and I have immense respect for the bloke even though he is a whiny little bi***.

Best interview yet, possibly because the memories are still so fresh but also because Stuart is such an intelligent and interesting speaker. Hopefully one day we’ll get to see Jimmy Anderson’s interview. Well done Simon for making it get a bit spicey, I doubt any other interviewer would’ve gone there.

Nice one! I am a lifelong English cricket supporter and I have always respected Aussie cricket. I am now 70 and have seen many great Australian sides, Dennis Lillee being my all-time favourite bowler! As far as sledging is concerned being working class from the North of England. taking the piss is part of our culture as well, a good sledging always makes me laugh! Respect to you mate, personally i like the Aussies!

Utterly facinating. You watch someone throughout their whole career, and you have no idea who they actually are. Until now. What a remarkable character.

A great man lives on in the memories of great moments. Broady stood tall and changed games over a decade. Great interview.

Adam Gilchrist walked when given not out in the 2003 WC semi versus Sri Lanka but agree it’s rarely been done throughout history

Sat in the lower Grand Stand with my godson to see Stuart make the first bit of his highest ever Test score with Trott. Hit that flat hooked six into the Tavern that never went more than 10 foot off the ground. Agree with those others who have met him - utterly charming, polite and modest. Great bloke.

You know what as an English cricket fan I had no problem with the Bairstow run out, the umpire made the decision, not the players and Johnny was out according to the rules! Also, I see nothing wrong with players respecting each other and being friendly after the game as long as they are trying like hell to win, In fact, mutual respect is a good thing as far as I can see, it's only a bloody game!

Why wouldn't the Aussies call back a batsman when they were bowled or given out LBW? If you're out, you're out. Hiding behind the 'spirit of cricket' nonsense is juvenile. It doesn't apply to this instance because Carey threw the ball as soon as he took it. The ball was in play. It was Bairstow and the umpires who were at fault. Bairstow for sleepwalking and the umpires for not paying attention to what Carey had done.....legitimately trying to run a player out.

I watched every single test match broad played starting with Sri Lanka away and ending with Australia at the oval this year...and I can honestly say there's never been a game where broads not given his absolute heart and soul for the shirt...massive heart never went hiding

Good interview this, I watch cricket all the time and usually interviews with players are totally dull because they're so well trained in media speak. But this was far more honest, great stuff.

A true legend and as a fan you feel like you get honest, insightful answers from Broady - loved every minute of that. Interested to know what the skip was during the KP chat though, what was cut :(

Malfoy is great. As an adoptee of Oz I have no problems with him; he was a fantastic player, who went in hard and I would pay to see him anytime. He was one of the few who put in on the 2013 Ashes horror show in Oz. Lucky to have seen him. The Bairstow thing was some sharp practice, but of a kind that was hardly what it was built up into. A situation where if it happens to you, you hate it, but if you take a step back you see it is within the rules and has happened before and will happen again. It certainly galvanised England, though.

Great interview. And what a great sportsman and gentleman Stuart Broad is. I think the Ashes rivalry is what keeps the game going. As for crowds getting stuck into players, of course it has some basis in respect not hate. You only need to go back a few years to see who was voted King of the Jungle in the Australian version of "i'm a celebrity get me out of her" by an Australian audience, FREDDY FLINTOFF, who himself copped heaps from Aussie crowds. No one was more surprised than him.😀

Aaaw.. The English said last Ashes they were the keepers of the Spirit of the Game. Apparently that includes whinging about the Umpires when a dozy Ginger takes a stroll down the pitch and gets stumped. Plus, abusing a batsman who made 140 and let's not forget the abuse of players as walk through the Long Room at Lords for lunch. Stuart won't be defined by one dismissal, if the ball hadn't hit the wicketkeepers gloves it wouldn't have gone to first slip. But as someone has already said Aussies have always had double standards over walking. Stuart will be judged by the amazing spells he bowled against the very best. His 8/15 is legendary but at times he seemed unstoppable and got the crowd behind him better than any other England bowler I can remember. A true genius as a bowler who gave me some of my best moments watching cricket, thank you

Most sports interviews are not that interesting because, let's face it, most sportsmen are not that interesting. Unusually, Broad is a very intelligent and eloquent man - which made this a fascinating watch.

Criticised Simon before now for talking too much during these interviews but this strikes the right balance. Broad is articulate and got a chance to talk, but Jordan did challenge him and didn't allow him just to paint his own picture.

Bairstow was either being ignorant of one of the basic laws of the game (literally Under 10s stuff), or he thought he could unilaterally decide when the ball was dead. So he was either stupid or arrogant. Why should Bairstow not get punished for being stupid or arrogant? Plus, this whole "advantage" argument completely falls apart with this clip: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qniF1K2vic7Fiag.html If Australia stumped Bairstow the same way Bairstow stumped Samit Patel, the UK would have kicked Australia out of the Commonwealth.

​@@sitaylor Yeah, I think the appeal was in the spirit of the game. Michael Vaughan made the point that if anyone broke the spirit of the game, it was Bairstow who decided that one of the most basic laws of the game didn't apply to him. I agree with Michael Vaughan (god that hurts to say) in this case. How can that Patel clip exist and England fans still try and say that Bairstow was wronged? The entire cricketing world was laughing at England and Bairstow when that clip surfaced after Lords. Like, you literally couldn't script that better. Still brings a smile to my face knowing that clips exists. Poor Bairstow doesn't just get to randomly decide to have a 180 degree shift in his opinion when the very same thing happens to him. Hypocrisy, thy name is Johnny Bairstow.

@@sitaylor Great example of a dead ball in cricket. There is clearly a moment when the SA batsman looks at the keeper and is happy that the keeper considers the ball dead and then leaves his crease. Rizwan is also not attempting to run the batter out, so also considers it dead. In that case the umpire would deem the ball to be dead. If Bairstow did that and Carey threw the ball after and hit the stumps then I would agree that it's not out. Not understanding the dead ball laws is the big reason with why some English fans are so upset about this. A little flick through the MCC laws should help.

I wish he had played for us....Yorkshire! He would have had a statue! Headingley...with weather, seam and swing...he would have got another god knows how many wickets! At least 50!

At the end of 2023 Pat Cummins will be remembered for retaining the Ashes, captaining Australia to the Test World Championship and the ODI Word Cup - not sure the Bairstow incident would get a mention.

Alex Carey was in the form of his life up until that moment. Since that moment and the ensuing bullying from English crowds and media, his career has nosedived and he now finds himself out of the national team. Its a shame, because all he did was perform a brilliant piece of wicket keeping.

I agree. Carey did nothing wrong, there was no sneaky pause or anything, he literally caught the ball and threw all in one motion. The reaction was massively over the top, with Carey's family getting abuse on social media and obviously it did affect him.

Kidding yourself thinking the bairstow incident was a dead ball.

Both umpires had disengaged one turning to give the cap back and the other not even looking walking off, it needed TV replays to determine what happened. Clearly everyone had felt it was the end of the over, Bairstow had marked his ground and walked to speak to the other batsman no advantage was being sought. Disgraceful appeal by Cummins and Australia, his legacy now tarnished forever.

@@jimmyriddle5246 for a nation still reeling from being caught systematically cheating (sandpaper gate) this was a golden opportunity to restore some much needed poor reputation, but instead of doing the 'right' thing, the moral decent thing, the Aussies confirmed they're the "same old Aussies ....." There was a very similar incident a couple of weeks ago at international level, was shown on BBC website, it wasn't the end of the over either, but they chose not to appeal. knowing the batter wasn't seeking an advantage and how it wouldn't be cricket to appeal for such a innocuous thing. I'd say 50% do walk. They stop for a moment just to process that they've nicked the ball, the keeper has caught it and everyone has appealed! When it's that blatant... You have to work. He'll always have to live with people commenting on this. Therefore, we know it wasn't good. @@stevebrindle1724

Full disclosure, never warmed to Broady as a bloke. Felt he was dripping in private school arrogance and entitlement. Well aware l don’t actually know the bloke but that was my impression. Post interview l feel like the ‘real’ Stuart Broad is a different beast, bar shouting in 😂. Loved the fact Jordan pressed him on several topics, however the KP questions were fudged/dodged and clearly a part was cut. We all know it was you Stuart, maybe we’ll have to wait until the ECB can’t hurt you for the truth!!
