Imagining playing it is one thing. Imagine writing it and performing as one song in a full set night after night in your 60’s. He’s a machine.

He's been called The Octopus for a reason. Dude holds 4-6 beats at a time like it's nothing. Truly the best drummer of our generation. Deserved Hall of Famer. Danny Carey really carries much of the band's instrumentals when you take the time to listen to Tool's songs intently. It's actually insane. I never get tired of listening to and watching him work his magic on the kit.

For sure, he is the central force of the band. Guitar and bass in different rhythms and Danny keeping them on the ground together. And Maynard wandering around them beautifully.

Danny Carey can play four different time signatures. One with each limb… he’d do five, but not with his pants on.

My Brother!!! Thank you for reacting to my request. I know how big of an appreciation for music you have, and I knew you would like this. This is one of my top 3 TOOL songs, which, for me,is saying something. Danny is not called the Octapus for nothing. This song truly shows his skill with all the Polyrhythms. Thanks again Tommy.

Danny Carey is a master!! This is a good video. The first part and middle sections are a warm up for Danny. On a side note he had a birthday recently. He is 60 now. Still young. As for the title. This is one of those F'ed up English words where they put a P at the beginning. Just think neuma.. As I stated earlier this is his warm up. My favorite part is coming up. When the overhead white light start to flash he shows his stuff. Try to keep up with his hands, try!! The rest of them are pretty good also!! Get ready my man. Danny is about to explode our brains! AND at 9:40 something he releases the drumming beast. Was that BOSS or what? I guess that is what drumming for 50 years can do for your skills.

  • @abrazor

What a journey, right? As the drumming peaks you feel like you can take on the world but at other times it is meditative. And the lyrics are insanely deep too. So glad you reacted to this.

Tool is always balancing the uncomfortable with the familiar to put the listener in a state to "join" with the music not just passively hear it . This means no two people have the same experience listening. I believe this is true for all great works of art. Having problems is normal when you first hear something like tool. When one experiences something complexly new the mind doesn't know how to approach it. Back in the day I wasn't sure I like Lateralus when it came out because it was so different from my expectations. Now I love it! Listen at your own pace and in your own way. Spiral out!

The guitars/vocals are so ethereal and the drums keep this constant mesmerizing, almost primitive or tribal like rhythm; each of Danny's four appendages doing some different rhythm. Very spirit-like (or, uh...pneumatic??) experience. Next Tool song: "Parabol/Parabola"

What I would pay to see TOOL with Sleep Token & Jinjer all together! Danny Carey is one hell of a drummer and this video shows exactly why, In the live show they had a cam overhead on Danny for Pneuma. the song is not too comlpicated (by Tools standards) but the drumming is on another level. Danny just makes it look like nothing to see here guys, but there are nested poly rhythms in there. Next you have to find one of Kai Hahtos drum playthrough videos he did for a Drum Expo or the Drum Cams from Nightwish Concerts in Finland, they are so similar but different. Big Love Brother

Danny Carey is one the best rock drummers of our time. Initially I was turned off by the excessive use of digital drums, but I then realized other bands would hire an additional percussionist to do what he's doing while drumming. Exceptional. My personal favorite drummer is actually Gavin Harrison, for me he's slightly better, but that's more a matter of taste. BTW: The song was great, I'd like to see a full band performance of this....

First, the balls. The absolute flex by Mr Carey to write this, put it on an album and sentence himself to playing it night after night in his 60's is just gargantuan. Second: an alternative to most people's interpretation, the title literally translates to Breath. I always imagined the heavy guitar sections as Godzilla stomping Tokyo so breath takes on a different meaning than the one in the lyrics. But it's funny.

Yeah I'm another who has had problems with Tool. This song however, is undeniable. The groove was fantastic, there were at least 3 distinct rhythms... working together, then apart, then back again between drummer and the other instruments. I can't fathom how you do that without messing up other than talent and lots of practice. Enjoyed that a lot, Tool will probably still be hit and miss for me, but i have new appreciation for what they do after seeing this. ❤ and ✌️

my great lonely musical wolf 🐺 The so ingenious and great game of rhythm, supposedly changing tempo to faster and faster as you yourself thought, felt and lost the rhythm after less than 10 seconds after the song started, you no longer knew what, what's the rhythm now....Don't worry, an extremely large proportion of people in the world have no feeling for rhythm or beat and already fail at rhythmic clapping at concerts.... And here at Danny's Polirhythmic master class example is at the most end of the day in terms of tempo, beat and rhythm! But it's still exciting because a lot of it seems so unusual, chaotic at times, but at the same time precisely ordered! I think that's why you like the band Jinjer so much, it appeals to you more and more and there's something about it that appeals to you in a positive way! Vladislav Ulasevych, the drummer from Jinjer, loves to play when composing with polyrhythmic sequences, other bars from other genres mixed with heavy metal, he often plays shuffles (invented by John "Bonzo" Bonham - Led Zeppelin), which is unusual and never heard is in metal! I think that's why you somehow like their sound, it's not a boring, typical metal sound like everyone else has traditionally done for many years and because of that you lose the joy and desire at some point because everyone and everything is the same and has to repeat itself all the time! That's why Jinjer broke out of this wheel many years ago, and here with this song and Danny flirting with polirhythms, influences from Far Eastern sounds, paired with rock and great rhythms, tempo and beat shifts just make you laugh, be amazed and enjoy! I can even shed tears at certain songs, bands and artists because their masterful skills and talent make me fall to my knees, feeling how much they put their own heart and soul into this one song, album or concert. that in the end I'm in tears because I notice and feel how much you, here Danny, what you are doing, your life, your heart is simply everything you are and have! Keep it up my lonely wolf sitting in the dark 🐺😉🤗🙏🏼

So, not sure if anyone else has brought up the fact that there is a rumor making the rounds that Danny Carey almost certainly made a deal with the Devil. No one is quite sure what Danny got out of it, but the Devil got Drum lessons.

Danny Carey can play four different time signatures. One with each limb… he’d do five, but not with his pants on.

"Pneuma" is a Greek word and Gnostic term meaning "Spirit". Spirit is associated with breath, air. (Think: pneumatic)

Pneumonia 😆 Actually, you're not far off! Pneuma is Greek for "spirit" (or breath). The word pneumonia comes from the Greek pneumon ("lung").

Cannot aggree more. Tommy, if you're going to check out drum cam videos, you must watch El Estepario. He is possibly the best drummer on the planet.

@@Will-ug5rs he is without any doubt. my son's drum teacher is a jazz musician, highly skilled and he said his grooves are impossible to play, especially on godzilla and blinding lights. also his one handed short clips are super addictive

Hi Tommy - Danny Carey is a beast. If You're into darked Christmas songs, I have one for You. It's Marko Hietala from Nightwish singing an old Finnish poem that was turned into a dark Christmas carol. "Varpunen Jouluaamuna" aka "Sparrow on Christmas morning": kzread.info/dash/bejne/q3-tyZamYdSvf7Q.html If the lyrics is hard to follow on screen - here's the English translation: "Snow has already covered the flowers in a valley, the comber of a lake frozen in the winter freeze, A sparrow, little one, has eaten the summertime food, the comber of a lake has frozen in the winter freeze. On the stairs of a little cabin there was a dear girl, come, sparrow, with joy, take a seed from me! It is Christmas, homeless my sparrow, miserable, come here with joy, take a seed from me! To the girl the dear sparrow flew joyously: with gratitude I do take the seed from you. The God will want to reward you sometime. With gratitude I do take the seed from you! I am not, my child, a bird from this land, I am your small brother, I came from the Heavens. The tiny seed, that you gave to the poor, the small brother of yours, from the land of the angels, got. lyricstranslate.com"

Well, I can see why he's wearing a sports jersey and shorts, that was a full on extreme workout and yet it looked relatively easy for him (though I'm sure it IS NOT easy).

Wrestling shoes, a lot of drummers wear them because they let them feel the pedals while still giving good grip.
