Danny Carey 'Pneuma by TOOL (Live in Concert) Drum Cam | 1st Time REACTION for Scott

00:00 Intro
01:04 Reaction
15:27 Final Thoughts
I play the Vic Firth Danny Carey drum cam video of Pneuma from my long time friend and band mate, Scott. Scott is a drummer and is very much into the jam band scene. He doesn't follow TOOL the way I do. I've seen this video a lot, but this is the first time for Scott.

Hit the nail on the head. “Boomers had Pink Floyd, Genxers have Tool.” I’ve always thought of Tool as a modern day Pink Floyd, not that they sound like Pink Floyd, but that they are on the creative level of a band like Floyd and do not sound like anything else.

I didn't even know about Tool until a few years ago and I was like "How in the hell did I not know about these guys and especially Danny Carey?" I'm a reformed drummer but it's still in my blood. It's so difficult to describe what makes Tool so unique, fascinating, and mesmerizing to those who have never played an instrument and dealt with something other than 4/4 time signatures. In songs like Invincible, there are sections where each musician is playing in a different time. Normally, something like that wouldn't be at all musical. Yet Tool manages to pull it off and then they bring the time back together seamlessly. The complexity is just off the charts and each of them make it look so effortless. There are just not enough superlatives. Each song is an incredible musical accomplishment.

What if Lars Ulrich played drums for Tool one concert?" Rush is the group that comes to mind that showed the way to Tool. In fact having Alex Lifeson play live with Tool was a perfect synergy. The other band that comes to mind is Iron Maiden, who are a band of five ( Janick joined), that have amazing time changes and perfect unity, in very complex music

i have a theory: the reason you can't "find the 1" in the song is because they're basing this song around the act of breathing. There's no "time signature" to that, so what I think Danny is doing is playing in a very "reaction"-based way, where his drumming is literally having a conversation or playing in such a way that with adam's guitar, and justin's bass riffs, it seems like a completely subliminal action, like it is with breathing. we don't think about it, but it always happens. it's just a part of our existence, and it's rarely "in the way" of anything we do.

  • @elasticmachinery

Danny, Justin and Adam write to 'songs' and only send it to Maynard once it's basically complete. Maynard at the point will immerse himself in it in for weeks or more and just let the lyrics flow from the composition. He said he'll intentionally listen to it on different audio sources, different environments etc...to ensure it fits everywhere possible. He's a modern day genius poet the way I see it...and this is just Tool, he has 2 other bands, Puscifer and A Perfect Circle as well!

100% disagree with the comment that he must be in his own head and not aware of or listening to anything else around him. The band has said they don't play to a click track. So they are 100% listening to each other, as any good musician should.

While I do agree it is usually the drummer who keeps the time so the guitarist and bassist keep up with them. Tool isn't just any band, obviously, but Danny in some parts probably just does his thing.

@@princeofpcos9804 Check out the new (today) rig rundown from Premier Guitar with Justin. No click. And Justin explains he has to run multiple delay time settings on his pedal board because the tempo of some songs changes by the end (mostly because of Danny speeding up).

Danny's just trolling at around 10:20. He does a little drumstick flip before and then a little after, for no real reason other than flair. Play on playa.

This song is more about the time signature than the playing, nothing he’s doing is out of the ordinary that makes me say wow, yes he’s good, it’s nice and clean I’ll give him that….that section where he plays the Tom’s continuously over the bar line, is just putting it on auto pilot. Maybe in the rock world he’s one of the best but this idea of him being the greatest out there is ridiculous, go check out some fusion drummers, one guy who comes to mind is Marco Minneman if you want to talk about 4 way independence or polyrhythmic drumming. There are too many to list you just have to leave the rock world.

These two think they know who the best in the business is, but they have yet to even watch the best in the biz. There are several drummers that existed who are way better than Danny Carey. John Bonham performed things on the drums that Carey wouldn't have a clue how to do. Buddy Rich is another, Carl Palmer, and let's not forget Neil Peart, just to name a few who are on the list of better drummers.
