Hi Matti! If I am heading out to do some casual photos, I usually grab a simplistic camera . If I am going to a park or natural setting, I take a point and shoot, maybe with a bit of a zoom. The worst experience is when I get out on a photo walk with too much gear and I spend all my time fiddling with 3-5 lens, bags and other things. Some of my favorite cameras are my cheapest, give me a Kodak ccd sensor camera any day. 5-16mp has been the resolutions I been using lately. I love using a DSLR too. I love shooting with my Pentax MX-1 and Q for pocket-ability. What makes me buy a new camera, usually the images I see that have a certain pop. I try to keep a low camera budget. Dedicated cameras for certain looks. Thanks for sharing!

I've gone from having six lenses of which I only used 2 regularly, to three which I use all the time: a fast standard prime, an f/2.8 standard zoom, and a standard-wide pancake. I'm going to say it made me feel less GAS-y: although I have more invested in lenses, I am using them every week. Would recommend.

I have an Olympus E-PL7, two Lumix GX-9s and an OM System OM-5 (with an Olympus neck strap) my newest addition. For very casual photo walks I take the Oly E-PL7, with the 20mm and 42.5mm f/1.7 Lumix lenses. I can put the camera body and two lenses in my coat pockets, and don't even need even a small camera bag.

Hi Matti! I have two cameras: a crop sensor Canon 100D and a full frame Canon 6D. The 6D is used 95% of the time, because I mainly take landscape and portrait these days. Also the 6D sensor quality is noticeably better than the 100D. The 100D is very handy if I go into a city and want to take a camera "just in case" because of its tiny size, and the image quality is fine for street photography. Basically the 6D does all I could ever want. It can even cope with wildlife subjects really well, except for birds in flight. I'm just not interested in other cameras after having acquired the 6D used just over a year ago, and would much rather spend money on used L series lenses...

The camera I take out depends on how I feel that day. Last month I felt like using my LX5. It is more work to get technically good photos with it, I had to be ready for that challenge. For GAS, yes you have it, just like we all do. To what extent I would not like to say! 😉 For an unused but cherished lens, my Olympus 45mm f1.8 spends too much time alone.

Hey Matti. I think most photographers get GAS from time to time. And, sorry, you have it! We all have our fave brands so when a new camera is released in their line up we check it out., initially online and then maybe in-store. Then we ask - do we need it? Will it help our photography? Can I justify and afford it? This might all be self evident to everyone. I usually try and not read or watch any reviews after having any alcohol (LOL) and then if I think I'd like / need the new camera I give myself at least an overnight cooling off period. Never buy a camera online in the evening. And I have a personal rule - if I buy a new camera then I have to sell a camera too. I currently have 3. Fuji X-S20, GRIII and GRIIIx, and I don't believe I have any plans to buy again! Yet!

HEre's when I look for a new camera. 1. If there's a shot or opportunity missed more than twice, and 2. There's newer camera's that can solve the problem that caused me to miss the shot. For instance, if I consistently cropped a shot and thought the result was too noisy, I'd start looking around for a higher resolution camera.

I don't have gas anymore. It used to be really bad at times. Watching a video of a camera and then going on online. Then people starter reviewing old cameras then I would jump on eBay and say 300 for this body great deal. But you have to factor in batteries and a lens of your in not invested into the system. I don't even go to ebay anymore. I'm 100 percent has free now.

I don’t think GAS itself is a bad thing. The problem can become what we do with it. It visits me every so often, so I dance with it until the moment passes. While being wise with money (because financial peril is not fun for pros or hobbyists) there’s no shame in wanting to experiment with technology, having a lot of ideas that do need a varied toolkit to realize, or even in being a collector. I prefer to have my own experience with photography than to police the way other people experience photography.

To me they are only a tool for me to enjoy taking photos - I have zero interest in video. I like buying lenses and I make sure that I always leave a lens on my camera for a week- I go on a photo walk every day. I use an OM-5 and the camera is still out-performing me. I would like to get the OM-1 Mkii but, at 61, it will probably be the last camera that I would ever buy. Thank you, Matti.

Hi Matti, my choice of camera for walks is made on the basis of the technical aspects. I will mention just there camera's as I have way too many. My daily camera which I use on frequent walks wherever I go is the OM System OM-5, because it is compact and light and weather sealed. It has all the features that I like to use like Live ND and Hand held HighRes. For portraits and (night) street photography I use the Olympus Pen-f, because of it's brilliant black & white features. For Macro and nature photography and situations where I need higher dynamic range I use the OM System OM-1. My 75mm f1.8 lens does not get that much use, but whenever I use it I get great results.

Let's say you get married and have your first child, you run to the nearest camera store and buy "a" camera, any camera. You take a thousand pictures every day. Who cares about the specifications of the camera then? You may as well have a dog or a cat. Or you may own a horse. You may even want to grow plants. Or landscaping a beautiful garden. In that light, perhaps we want new equipment when we don't really have a subject we want to photograph.

Generally this is how I choose a camera before heading out (I break these rules constantly :-). GRII - quick snaps, rapid changing situations Olympus XZ-1 - General walk around camera, a camera when I don't want to take a camera along (mmm... that does not make any sense :-), love the colours and look of the images Olympus E-1 - When I feel like shooting film but with a digital camera Olympus E-M1-III - Do everything camera , hiking, macro, people. Rugged, weather sealed. New camera? Well, sometime in the future I would like to get a 35mm mirror-less digital for my older 35mm SLR lenses. As for less used lenses, I do not use my longer lenses very much, 90mm and longer (35mm equiv)

I got my gx85 kit sight unseen because I thought the two lenses would cover a lot of use cases. I felt a bit exposed not having weather sealing, had a desire for more responsive autofocus, and felt paralyzed by the compulsion to switch lenses frequently when trying to make images so I got a q2 hoping to embrace its limitations. That camera has served me well. Now I want a camera that will truly be everyday carry in a pocket I can have anywhere. Even going to work. For that I'm considering a GRIIIx. I can justify that camera for a use case more than buying a new m43 body at this point. To me those three cameras are different enough to coexist without one being an 'upgrade' for another. I use what I have interchangeably.

On my GAS shopping list would be: a DJI drone (so far managed not to buy it out of concern for regulations), Panasonic 100-400mm MFT lens (already have the 100-300 which I don't use a lot so again a reason not to indulge). What helps to get rid of the guilt is to sell some other either older or not often used gear to help fund the new purchase. If I can I'll try to buy it used (unless it's something just released). Last on the list is the OM EM-1 Mk3 or OMS OM-1 Mk1 to replace my EM1X. EM1X is a very good camera for stills but it's just very bulky to carry around and kind of beats the purpose of MFT. So in the end I usually grab my G9 or GH6 as they are more compact even though I've set up the GH6 for video. Both G9 and EM1X were bought second hand ;-)

I like to stay small with Olympus for hiking photography and that drove me to last upgrade to M5 for more closeup work. Recreational photo and video maker here! I tend to switch / collect cameras often based on feeling. Right now I have a sony zve1 with 40mm g lens. Fantastic combination and for me 12mpx is plenty. Video is out of this world. But also a big m43 fan. If Panasonic would have launched a g100/gx9/gx8 with their new sensor and 4k 10bit video I wouldn’t have swapped. I also recently sold my om5 because of the video quirks. So close of being the perfect camera for me. But then I realised the zve1 has all I search for: small light (almost identical to om5), ibis, 10 bit video with organic look (like my old bmpcc). Big bonus is the low light and 14bit color fidelity in stills. Downside for me is no evf, but just like you I tend to use the screen more and more.

It really depends on a lot of factors and priorities. I have an EM5 I, which I bought around 3 years ago, before that I had an E620 since 2010. I do see the limitations in low light stabilisation or maybe it no longer works well and the same with autofocus. Video is limited. I will just wait for a good deal on a relatively less old newer than my own camera and pounce on it when I get the chance. My general interests are travelling and landscapes and I think it does not require too much tech as such.

Not the last word in edge to edge or speed but you can't grab the image if you don't have it with you. I prefer to shoot prime but to take my 1.8s and /or telephoto then I need a shoulder bag even if it is fairly small (MFT rules!). The things the LX100 didn't have and I wanted are: fully articulating screen, superior EVF, larger sensor, interchangeable lenses, IBIS, weather sealing, slightly larger body and over 50% more resolution. The boxes were sufficiently ticked. Thank you for your informative and entertaining channel!

I have found that as most of my photography is street photography and portrait photography I find that my Fuji X100 and old canon D10 are too obtrusive. I sold my Ricoh GR some years ago and instantly regretted it. I’d like to buy the GRiiix as the focal length of 40mm would be a reasonable compromise for both uses.

I don't do street photography, so my camera equipment is always chosen by purpose. Currently, my best long telephoto lenses are Nikon, so I will usually use Nikon for wildlife. If it's something where I want to use vintage lenses, then Canon equipment. Sometimes I may choose film cameras when I want a certain look. I have an infrared converted camera for when the light is very harsh and I want to do landscape. I rarely buy new cameras. My newest cameras currently are my Canon 5Ds which I bought in 2018 and a gopro hero 8 which I bought in 2020. I buy lenses when I want to do something and none of my current lenses is satisfactory. I buy old used stuff from time to time, often from thrift shops and fix it myself. When I started out, I didn't know what I wanted, so many of my purchases were off target for digital equipment. I first tried APS-c, but eventually figured out that all the best equipment is full frame. I have given away all of my APS-c gear, and now I use full frame. For Nikon I use a D800e with a D610 for backup. For Canon I use a 5Ds with a 5D Mark II for backup. I have 35mm Canon and Nikon film cameras, which share the lenses with the digital equipment. I also have a micro four thirds camera for arduous hikes when I want something really light (Olympus Pen E-PL7). I even have a large format camera for special occasions. I have a very large number of lenses. A few I bought new, many I bought used on eBay or at camera shops. Even more I got at thrift shops and did my own CLA on them. When I give cameras to family and friends, I give the complete kit. Backpack, tripod, camera, lenses, chargers, cables, batteries, cards, etc. That way, they don't have to buy stuff to use it properly. I can also give a nice spectrum of lenses to accomplish just about whatever is needed. I don't think that there is anything wrong with buying camera gear just because you want to. I do think it's a big mistake to think it will improve your photography most of the time.

Lots of questions in this video. I'm a hobbyist photographer and I take a couple of walks a day, always with a camera. Which camera I choose to take depends on a number of factors, including weather, anticipated subject(s), lens choice, lighting, etc. I don't do video, so that isn't a factor when I'm looking at new (to me as I almost always buy used) cameras.

I just bought a (likely temporary) new camera. I already have the A7iii and XT3 and am perfectly happy with either. Both do all I want / need while their successors so far don't offer much more than I need at an attractive price. BUT I have a travel project coming up and before I throw out a lot of money on a trip and return empty handed because something breaks, I decided to buy a second Sony (used) and ordered an A7IV. I decided on the Sony because I simply have more / better / the right lenses and accessories for the system for such a trip and because I got a good deal. I also only have to carry one system on such a trip, which makes the whole thing much easier to organise. If I could choose new, I'd probably have bought an S5ii(X), but it would be yet another mount with yet another upfront cost of things like flashes, adapters, batteries and more. Because I don't start from scratch and I don't need another or new system - I just needed a backup in case something goes wrong. And when the travel project is done, I might sell the new camera or my old one again - simply because it's cheaper than renting would be for the same time period and because I don't need more than I already had. Buying new for me becomes a thing when the new generation offers something that would improve on my experience and results in a lasting manner. With Sony, for me, this could be mostly software like focus bracketing for macros, pixel-shift high-res, the new flippy screen and the better evf. But it would all have to come together in one affordable package and not something spread out between their newest 4k+ models. So changing the mount becomes an option, but the cost and time to learn it again, as well as the often only incremental upgrades, also often don't justify the effort and money spent. Upgrading a camera comes from a place of being offered something better at a good price. Switching a mount comes from the current offerings not providing this improvement AND needing a new camera due to defects or gross dissatisfaction with the results, handling or company policy.

Firstly without spare money there are no purchases. Then it splits into two reasons, technology improvements or shiny and pretty😅. I’m content with the sharpness of my lenses even budget ones so mostly I would look at bodies but as a Canon user I found that you have to wait ten years for Canon to bring out anything worthwhile as they reuse and cosmetically change camera parts. Lastly as I get older and more sensible I just take photos as my gear is suitable for 90% of my needs even though it’s old [DSLR).

Hi Matti, that's pretty simple. I'm trying to push my existing cameras to the limit. In my case a Lumix GX8. At some point I realized: Fine camera even today, but my preference went more and more to "low light" shots. I love the operation of the Lumix system, and it just so happened that after a long time this company brought out an affordable 35mm camera with the S5II. This camera is simply fun, especially with the 1.8 fixed focal lengths. And for focal lengths over 200mm (35mm equivalent), there's always the GX8 and compact telephoto lenses. Do you need it? Not really. But if you look at the development between the GX8 and the S5Ii - there has definitely been progress. Not as rapidly as in the smartphone sector, but "conventional" photography is not stagnating either. What I would like to try out would be the Leica Q3. Wetzlar is less than 30km away from me, the camera is just incredibly stylish and definitely far too expensive. But costs and benefits don't always have to be in relation to each other. Especially if you don't have to earn money with it.

Thanks Matti.... enjoyed your video....I have two cameras & on one of them I leave a particular wide angle lens on it most of the time...the other camera I change lenses depending on what pics I am taking... before I go out I decide what combination I want to use...no new cameras for me as I can't afford to upgrade to mirrorless gear...I still love my two DSLR cameras & lenses...I have Nikon cameras.... cheers 🦘🦘😄

I only own the original Olympus EM5 at the moment. Last year, I did buy a 2nd hand compact camera to try out in my art bag for taking reference photos for sketches, but I didn't like it so I sold it on. I also sold 5 lenses last year that I really wasn't getting enough use out of and I knew I wasn't really interested in taking them out this year. My needs have changed and what I like to shoot has become more focused. I've tried various genres and had various lenses for those genres and now I've got a good idea of what I really enjoy shooting and what I don't really care for and that allowed me to streamline my kit. So I basically have a 3 prime set plus the 2 tiny Panasonic kit lenses the 12-32 and 35-100 for family trips where I might need the wider 12mm or something longer than my 45mm prime. Those two weigh nothing and take up very little room. My GAS for camera gear has pretty much passed but now I have GAS for certain art supplies instead 😂 PS. The round building is a bandstand, it's a sheltered place for bands to give concerts in the parks. There are lots of them around here in New Zealand too.

I should have said for brass bands. Most of them were built at the end of 19th century and some are very ornate. New photo project maybe 😉

As for when deciding to upgrade, it's much easier now that it used to be. When digital tech was improving quickly, there was sometimes a real need to upgrade for resolution or noise reasons. But for the last several years, improvements have been incremental and would not affect my life much, so spending money returns fewer rewards. The last purchase for a used Olympus E-M1.2 was because my previous E-M1 had high shutter count. I shoot a lot of bicycle races so wanted to avoid risk of failure, and also the price was right. I used that E-M1 for 8 years so I can be patient.

when i want more megapixels and need better focusing with a future telephoto. i did my research and found a canon r7. while my panasonic could do birds, i think the canon would be significantly better. unfortunately my combo with the canon is an 18-45mm. if i like it that much, i might trade in a lens or two until i have acquired a 100-400mm lens for the Canon. nothing is wrong with the 100-300mm of mine, but i feel like M43 for these lenses are basically on par with Canon's RF lenses for telephoto specifically. also the Vespa picture, also red flowers for the subject of red would've been an interesting composition :D

I probably missed it, but what are you using for video right now? whatever it is, it looks really good. I don't think the Pocket 3 has as good of output from what I've seen, but it sure looks very handy, which might be a worthwhile tradeoff.

If a camera makes me doubt, if I want to carry it out, then I might as well sell it. I dont mind more weight and size, as long as I get photo quality I want. Everything else, like weight and size, combined, is a price worth paying. Nothing worse, than regretting not carrying your best gear, when life presents you, with an amazing shot. I decide to upgrade, when its 3 or more generations or tiers, from my current gear. Any less, and the gains are marginal. That's just how I see it.

I do own 3 Fujifilms, X-T2, X-T3, X-H2. If I go out like today with my daypack, I most probably use my T2 with the 16-50 OIS: cheapest cam, cheapest lens. My photos don't get better with 40 MPixels. But I must admit, AF is better on the other cameras, so I am thinking about selling the T2 this year.

Honestly for me it comes down to a feature I need or a desire to shoot a particular type of photography. I shoot a lot of landscapes and low light, so it predominantly comes down to dynamic range improvements and high iso improvements. I also shoot street, wildlife and portraiture on occasion. I have a D850 that's my landscapes and low light camera. E-M5 III and a E-PL9 for street and a OM1 for wildlife. The Nikon and OM1 also double for portraiture.
