As a proud Portuguese I say: Rhodesia will always have my love and support. It will never die for those who love it and all it represents!

I think that what Rhodesia has become only proves that these brave men were fighting for the right cause - A Rhodesia where all people, black and white, benefited from the bounty of a stable and well organized economy and infrastructure. Rest easy all.

Mate, I hear you. I increasingly find myself more patriotic towards what we were, rather than what we've become. I believe in the same things my grandparents did, more than the things my siblings believe in. Theres 10 years between me and my younger sister, 11 years between me and my younger brother, but ideologically it might as well be 100 years. There is a saying; "Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, weak men create hard times". And I think its 100% true. I was raised believing it was right to support those that stood beside you in times of strife. Now they're raised to believe its right to support whatever makes your life easier. Its sad and lonely to feel like a dinosaur at age 39. I feel closer and more akin to the men that fought for Rhodesia and the commonwealth when I was barely a year old than I do to those that enjoy the fruits of such struggles now. My race doesn't come into it, but my place as part of the family that was our commonwealth does.

@fred smith I 100% agree with you; their cause WAS just. Their tactics weren't. And had Smith's govt been allowed to continue its program we would have a modern Zimbabwe where all can vote, but it would have retained a cohesive and comprehensive stable and secure economy and society. The concept of responsible majority rule is one of education and gradual measured change; it takes longer but always yields better results in the long run, for everyone. Violent revolution has never yielded good results in human history. Mostly because the change happens with both sides still full of resentment, hate and a desire for revenge. These are not good ingredients for successful progress. I pray that with the recent change in leadership that Ian Smith's eventual dream of a united, equal and prosperous Zimbabwe may finally be realized.

Too Fred Smith may i ask have you read animal farm? All animals are equal! As the revolution begun. After the revolution. All animals equel some more equal then others! Pigs like Mugabe did great the sheep dogs doing his bidding putting down rebellion were doing ok. The farm yard horse retired to the glue factory. Nothing has changed in Zimbabwe one pig has replaced another and the worker will be put down. The farm has gone to ruin, education infrastructure law and order health care are no match now for what was Thriving Rhodesia! Also the miltary standards for letting lose fire arms on annoyed voters is somewhat below that expected of any tinpot dictorship from a seventies south American banana republic!

a gradual integration of Africans into eventually running the country would have been a far cleaner and more successful way to have a majority rule in my opinion. However even with the rushed change Mugabe should never have taken the country, it's a sad thing that so many Zimbabwe/Rhodesians have suffered due to actions of outside countries both UN and USSR and an internal struggle that escalated to brutality.

My ancestor was Cecil Rhodes' brother... Rhodesia was a symbol of hope for Africa, which was unfairly snuffed out.

How the fuck is a country built by europeans a symbol of hope to the rest of sub saharan Africa? Only if it was built by sub saharans to show the rest of the neighbors countries and the world it would be a symbol and evidence it could be done. If anything botswana and rwanda are the real symbol of hope.

Had I only been born earlier, if there has ever been a cause that I would have fought for, it would have been for the preservation of Rhodesia!

When I look up the words 'bravery', 'dedication' and 'guts', there is a picture of a Rhodie. God bless all those who fought for freedom against thugs and terrorists.

I was a teenager in Zambia during the height of the Bush War, and schemed how to runaway from home, travel a couple of hundred miles and get across the boarder. A fantasy that never came to be. My family returned to the UK and I joined the British Army in 77. My fascination and admiration for the Rhodesians, the Troopie, RLI, Selous Scouts, Greys Scouts, The Black Devils, RR, C Sqn SAS etc never diminished. Rhodesians Never Die

Yep, my old man went to Rhodesia in the late 70s for training and ended up meeting my mother in Salisbury

Interesting video on a country betrayed by the west. Around 1975 that lasted until 1990 a civil war erupted in Lebanon between Christians and Muslims. We had some fighters from Africa, mostly white from South Africa and some from Rhodesia that came to help the Western backed Christians. However we lost in the end but Rhodesia had it much worse. Great country it was Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe is a shit.

Dude...because I am Canadian. I was one of those 'foreign volunteers" who enlisted in the Rhodesian Army. A "man among men" among thousands...but not enough to stem the tide.

Yes, the freedom fighters were true heroes in taking on armoured cars, jet fighters, helicopter gunships etc armed only with an AK47 and a desire to be free.

As already mentioned, there was a no photos policy but to this day I wish i'd taken photos of what I went through. Not for my gain but simply simply for posterity. Intake 141 - C coy - Kariba (1974 - 75) then back to depot - 4 R.R. - Manicaland. The proudest time in my life was serving with F Coy (extended call up 76) under Major "Buster" Johnson. We lost a lot of guys during that time but when R.L.I. say that you have done a fantastic job - well that is something to be truly proud of.

Nicola Taylor After the first and second world war's Rhodesia had provided more troops and lost more troop's fighting for the crown! Provided Rhodes scholarships to those world leader's who voted sanctions against Rhodesia yet they were eager to squander over the mineral's within the country!

jayhuegan do not blame the blacks, the RAR, Rhodesian African rifles fought died and bled amongst their white brothers. Blacks accounted for 80% of all Rhodesian soldiers yet the RAR was entirely volunteer, you want to blame someone, blame the communists/ globalists who killed Rhodesia and left her for dead.

I am a soldier in the US Army and I am too young to know the wonders of your land but had i been born 60 years ago i would have along side you proudly!

In fact, Rhodesia was actually one of the most progressive states in the whole of Africa and, before Harold Wilson poked his nose into where it wasn't wanted, was doing a lot better than even Britain at racial integration.

The FN-FAL (or R-1 as the South African supplied variant was called) rocked the house. You hit a man with a solid torso shot at battle ranges and he is down...solid, accurate and reliable - what more could a soldier ask for?

Thanks for that comprehensive reply. The Armoured Corps must have been must have been wetting themselves in anticipation of blasting ZANLA to oblivion! I read somewhere recently that the director of the CIO at the time is suspected of having compromised security in the latter stages of the war; the classic cold war double agent. It's a small step in logic to assume that ZANLA was informed of both "Hectic" and "Quartz" and took the appropriate steps to have the attack cancelled.

Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertins are good old Canadian boys but the music rings true for me and my memories of the Rhodesian Army. Well I now finally have an FAL, Receiver made by IMBEL-ITAJUBA-Brazil, C.A.I., Georgia, VT. It is something I tell You, yes I do know You are well aware of this, it's just my being amazed & I can see why it has the reputation that it does. One nice Rifle it is! Shoots real nice, feels real good, and is accurate. I know it is not exactly the same, but it is a FAL! Just wanted to tell You. Carry On Sir!

@TheBoeremag don't be sorry...it's a Romanian version of the Russian Dragunov. The easiest way to tell is by the "hourglass" pattern on the magazines. It was one of several found near the admin centre we set up in the middle of Chomoio during the OP Miracle raid. A couple of them had the optical sight and mount but the rest had iron sights. Don't feel embarrassed about the mistake - for years I told people it was a Dragunov until an expert on Soviet weapons pointed out exactly what it was.

@naroj10 - Afrikaans was spoken but English was by far the main business / social language. Amongst the African population - Shona was the main spoken tongue although there also Matebele, Ndebele and Chenyika. In the farming / mining communtity, a pidgin language - Chilapalapa was used, primarily a Shona influenced version of Fanagolo (South Africa - primarily Zulu with English and Afrikaans input !!) Rhodesia, a land locked country had a navy...of sorts. BSAP had a marine arm that patrolled Lake Kariba and the Zambezi and were involved in many clandistine operations (mainly dropping off and picking up canoeists) during the Bush War.

Good to see those old french AML 90 (Auto Mitrailleuse Légère canon de 90 mm) recce armor that served well on the african soil!

@tprdfh51 - One thing we learned at an early stage of the war was although, F.N. magazine held 20 rounds. If you filled the magazine it was VERY, VERY prone to jamming, to avoid my patrol only had 19 rounds in our mags (as Instructed !) No one, bar none of mine ever had a stoppage !! One thing I have never seen is blokes counting rounds - my guys did - 18 gone- magazine change (19 is in the chamber) Athough superioroly outgunned by the Commies - R.L.I. (the Champions) kill ratio was 138:1

In war for independence of Croatia, your man Thomas Crowley joined Croatian defenders who were mostly without arms and without war experience to resist mighty Yugoslav-Serbian army who attacked cities and civilians in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He helped Croats to organize an elite unit and he lead them in many actions. He was the legend among his comrades in Croatia. Killed at the end of the war by his own land mine, not by enemy. He is not forgotten.

John Ward (an Aussie) purchased those weights from Herbie Gibbons gym in Salisbury, painted them camo and brought them on Bush trips packed into his Eland 90.
