Thanks Jordan!! I needed this!
SSL EQ+1176 into a 2A for vocals is quite the recipe for vox
A nice alternative to HEAT if you don't have PT, is Slate VCC, or even something like United Plugins Front DAW. VCC is on my 2-Bus from the start, along with the SSL Native Bus Comp and you can push into it to get some nice subtle saturation that's great to mix with.
My oldest plugin is the Renaissance Compressor. I mix dialogue and its opto mode is still great. In fact I passed on the Arouser plugin because it was just a little bit smoother, though who knows when the next sale hits. As for analyzers, I‘ve learned to use them as a reference to what I‘m hearing, though that temptation to rely less on your ears is always there.
that is a gnarly and excellent bass-tone, I must say
Rcomp, RVox, L1, Oxford EQ, Oxford Comp, are plugins I still use
Great mix, d00d!
As one of the many people who removed all things Waves from their lives and isn't looking back I still find this video very useful for choosing the proper non-Waves replacements. Thanks so much!

A good alternative to the SSL stuff is actually SSL Native. Their essentials bundle occasionally goes on sale for $50, both the Channel Strip 2 and the Bus Compressor. Best thing about these is their compatibility with SSL 360, letting you use all the plugins across your project as a virtual console. If you’re into physical controls, their UC1 is also compatible with it
Crane Song Peacock AAX & Phoenix II tape emulation if it were made as a VST/non-AAX plugin would be up there with the Kazrog's, Kush Audio's BLYSS, Tone Empire BlackQ & Goliath plugins, LeapwingAudio's DynOne v3+, Oversampled Pancz, Pulsar Modular P42 Climax & Tone Project's Kelvin.
I highly recommend everyone to try out the SSL Native Bus Compressor. I was surprised how bad the Waves G-master buss sounds compared to the SSL Native one. I completely replaced it in everything

To me it's just a very different character. I feel it works better with jazz and electronic/rap than rock for me. It's a K series emulation so I shouldn't be surprised I guess

Native=C200 Console. Waves =GBus. SSL Native has no saturation aka colorless. The Waves has that snap and color.
Ive got the melda production bundle. Their shit is so baller
We are having a studio built to play around with. I can't wait to try this stuff. We really struggled last time and the end result was shit. I hope we do better the next round, pretty sure that ssl is the missing link to get a good start.

dude ive watched almost half your videos probably and let me say your attitude towards mixing and music is so respectable but most of all, youve helped me so much just consolidate the answers to the questions ive had about mixing thanks man!
Great video! :) Do you normally use the mono or stereo of the wave's plugins? - What's your heat substitute recommendation? Any chance you can do a comparison video to test out if any other saturations can get a similar effect with just as little effort? (would be a sick video!)
Cool video... I've been using half a dozen old and not-so-old plugs for my mixes. I know how they work and what I can get from them. And yet, I still get asked, why am I not using the latest plugs... My reply, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
you are a goldmine!
While I certainly see the benefits of using the stuff you know, something has to be said for the fun of experimenting. Using new plugins gives me inspiration and a change in sound/visuals keeps things fresh for me. That being said, I keep coming back to the NDSP stuff, especially omega granophyre for rhythm guitars and the NDSP plini for leads and ambient tones, and the fabfilter bundle for eq, comp etc. But I like to mix it up once in a while, and a bit of gear geeking is just fun right?

The great thing about NDSP is that it's mix ready, a bit of tweaking here and there and you have kick ass tones.
The only old tools I revere over are the following (please contribute, gang): (1) Voxengo Recorder: (yeah, you have read that correctly) (2) Voxengo r8BRAIN PRO: anti-aliaser/nyquist resampler (yes you also read this correctly) (3) Waves X-Noise: (it is the only plugin that gets distortion fizz from close proximity of microphone recording (I tried 12 different models and types of mics) and background noise out with almost no artefacts!, more precise than Waves Z-Noise IMHO) -------- Waves X-Noise x Clarity Vx/Vx Pro make the perfect NR (noise reduction, more like elimination) VST system hands the fk down...ignore the other Waves NR plugins. Then you can use just about any linear or logarithmic additive EQ to dial in to one's liking.
@TheReal_E.IRIZARRY

Most people don't know but if you use Voxengo Recorder and set the buffer rate and buffer size to the max, you can record your playback no matter how much clock jitter you have and still get a pristine recording for the most part and if needed, RX DeCrackle can get the little nuisance/nuance out unaffecting the rest of the mix.
Good plugins but after trying Ssl channel Strip and Ssl bus compressor 2 from SSL I was blowing way how good and smooth sounded those plugins. I deleted waves ssl immediately.
Have you tried updating to the new ssl-ev2? Not that you really need to as it's kind of a "if it ain't broke don't fix it" kinda deal. Also! If you didn't already know, CLA-76's, the 2A, 3A, and a few other waves comps got updated just a few weeks ago to include a mix and trim knobs, which is pretty sick!

Also another note, that I just learned from CLA himself, is on his CLA Mix hub there is actually section of the plugin where you can control every instance of SSL-E channel across your entire mix all within one window. I had no idea it existed and it's kind of insane. Definitely worth checking out. a HUGE time saver for something like drums where you've got SSL-E across like 6 seperate channels. Keep up the good work!
This video was brought to you by Tesla lol! just kidding, another solid demonstration Jordan on the good stuff!
You can never really go wrong with waves.... I never do a mix without them....
Agreed. DAW and plugins are just tools. If it ain't broken, don't fix it
Thanks, what about delay and reverb?
I still think Waves SSL is a good mixing tool, however I found that I do better sounding mixes with Console 1 SSL e4000 and other softube C1 channel strips. I like doing eq moves without seeing the screen, that makes me super focused on a sound.

@@johnsnyder4949 Same for me. Ssl xl 9000 k eq sounds amazing on guitars and synths (it has that color that just fits these instruments incredibly well), BCA on drums, Zener-Bender on pianos, standard e4000 is amazing as main vocal eq and compressor for pop/rock/metal stuff, ssl x9000 compressor in peak mode can make vocals jump out of the very dense rock/metal mix like nothing else I've heard, Weiss Gambit Eq is amazing for surgical corrections and for mastering or as mix buss eq. Also saturation on each channel strip is great and very distinct.. I can talk about it all day haha

What’s up with the Cranesong Phoenix being pro tools only. Anyone knows an alternative?
I mean if you have only used waves plugins yea they work.. but the plugins I've been using lately alot of softube stuff and plugin alliance.. they just give stuff a better face lift.. some of waves stuff just sound like a blanket being put over it..

If may ask re SSL 4000 e, i’ve noticed in videos mixers often have the analogue switch set to “off”. Is this for saving on latency? Or is the noise is undesirable down the line?

In those waves plugins it just adds a small bit of pink noise or something, not harmonic saturation related to the signal. Best to turn off

@@ezrashanti ~ amazing, thanks Ezra! Will do. Have noticed in ‘high gain’ tracks things are just a little fizzier than I’d like, my beginner skills and imperfect recording environment also probably account for that. Which made me doubly curious about whether adding more ‘noise’ was a good idea

@@Jalliams Np, you may want to research to double-check re: Waves "analog". I think it's helpful to try to get color closer to where you want it to be on the way in but there are many different philosophies. Definitely put some time into learning everything you can about room acoustics / treatment / speaker placement because if you can't hear the full frequency spectrum accurately you are fighting an uphill battle. Good luck!

Brother great video but just a note, I think it's unfair to say that 'plug-ins today are under-priced' because despite them being professional tools, there are many young up and comers with extremely limited funds who wouldn't have a chance to be able to use them unless they had more cash. I know pirating for many is also an option, but pricing should definitely encourage affordability to counter against that.

Hey Jordan, for those who don't use Pro Tools and dont have Heat, would you recommend putting a slightly touch of something like Decapitator in the master track instead?
@JasonBuffin
Жыл бұрын
Heat is basically tape-style saturation and compression applied across every track in the mix. Probably the closest thing to it would be either A. put a subtle tape plugin on every track or Studio One has a similar "Mix FX" feature and you can use Softube Tape with it.
@hardcoremusicstudio
Жыл бұрын
I've mixed without Heat a bunch of times. Would just mean using a little more saturation on the individual tracks, not replacing it with a plugin on the mix bus
@davejohnsonmusic
Жыл бұрын
As I posted above, try a Bus console emulation like Slate VCC, or United Front DAW is a good alternative. That should be the first plugin on your 2-bus, followed by a bus compressor and mix into those after you've got your static mix of volume and panning nice. Decapitator could work also, as it has those console flavors, but I've never actually tried it on the 2-bus. I guess I always thought of it as a more aggressive saturator.
I like choice except I don’t use waves plugins
