I'm here to to help aspiring rock & metal audio engineers make better sounding records. My name's Jordan Valeriote. I've been a recording engineer, mixer and producer for over 10 years and have worked with artists like Silverstein, Emery, Neck Deep, Counterparts, Intervals and more. I regularly post the best recording and mixing tips, tutorials and walkthroughs for heavy music on this channel.
While other "experts" online are trying to teach you useless rules and place limitations on your work - advice like "only boost 3db on an EQ" or "avoid using compression," I'm here to reveal the techniques that pro engineers actually use on real world records.
In addition to the free videos here, I also offer premium courses related to mixing, recording and editing. Access to my courses is limited to email subscribers only. To get on my email list, download my free mixing guide for EQ and compression at mixcheatsheet.com

I personally like just being subtle with both. I have always hates doing the sweep technique I never do it unless I hear in problem in mix context.
What ive really learned from this is that im always unofficially acting as a producer in my band. It can be a struggle as a drummer because sometimes you just gotta pick up a guitar and show someone something, and those dudes can get defensive about it lol
Question. Do we need to leave the high and low end untouched or cut it before/beyond a certain point for most instruments or mixes?
Great video! Thank you very very much! Waiting for Magic Compressor Settings for TOMS and also for drum ROOM
I would -love- to take a crack at these files 😵
Fiver Guy uses his ears!
I've done a lot of mixing on some Sony minicomponent system from the 2000's for that exact same reason (2nd one). This is such an overlooked advice. I don't have studio monitors so I have to make the final mix with headphones, but using the Sony speakers (which even has different modes) feels like a huge advantage. I Def recommend using some crazy techniques like this haha
MIX1: 20% Mixing MIX2: 40% Mixing MIX3: 45% Mixing MIX4: 60% Mixing MIX5: 0%....
Daniel's such a cool dude and did a great job! I'm taking notes - "don't overcomplicate it" and AUTOMATE!
Mix 3 way better than Mix1 cose it have stereo image/plans and a lot more transients/not so compressed. Actualy it have the best stereo image/space stage. Mix 2 is the best, tonal balanse right, dynamic right, saturation is cool though a bit overdone at the top end, but I believ it due to lack of control. The only thing is stereo image have only 2 plans: 1 for vocal and second for everything else
I wonder what monitors used for mix 3 and mix 2
I’m loving this band. Sounds just like Blink 182 but with new music.
the most noticeable to me was the buzz on the sm7b narration sections. either a ground loop or bad preamp.
new to producing music. what’s the best way to learn mixing/mastering?
When I do my final mix on speakers I bought for $12 about 10 years ago they cant believe me. So here is a challenge, mix on the cheapest speakers you can find and let me know?
Great vid! 👍🏼 Where in your chain do you put autotune? I know you process vox in this order: • Compress • DeEss • Limit • Automate …so where would YOU put a pitch correction plugin? Thanks in advance!
What's your settings for the vtpc on the cla10a ?
I appreciate your wisdom. Thanks
some programmed drums sound so small , digital, and how are guys not tuning their guitars? lol seems to be a problem
Snare is more muted on tape,
Probably because I knew what I was listening to, but tuned versions instantly sounded boring... Depends on the singer of course, but your examples had pretty good ones.
I find it amazing that a tuned vocal presents a psychoacoustic across the whole mix. That’s an incredible discovery! Thanks for the share, Jordan! Pure gold! Ps. My maths is terrible! Didn’t even notice until comments 🤣🤣
Peter Criss Love Gun on the Love Gun album and Larger Tan Life on Alive II believe its a 14x8 steel snare. Check it out, especially larger rhan life his entire kit sounds amazing
I like 4 then 2 - but they are super close - more of a preferred taste rather than a difference in quality.
I don't know WHY the waveforms weren't addressed!🤔... There were probably 3-4 'masters' whose waveforms were like FLAT BARS, and UNLESS U wanted 2 use them as a reference for hearing what OVERDONE compression sounds like -I would've just ELIMINATED the right-off The Bat!😒
Nickelback snare is probably a sample.
The sub bass is deeper on tape than digital. That's one thing I noticed right away. It's not even so much hearing a difference as feeling a difference.
Your plugins rule. Clipper saves my snare from getting squashed into oblivion from mastering. I use Landr for mastering and my snare always gets smashed and quiet compared to my mixes. Clipper and Softube Saturation Knob saves it.
i want to say you did not hear anything from the top two studios except what you asked for because they were getting paid to master your audio not offer production tips on your mix that may be another price point & or contract in itself. rather you gave them what they asked and paid for keep it simple. if the client then tells the studio whom mastered the audio.... is to much or to little, then discussion and direction can be taken and paid for to facilitate the needs of the client
я бы выбрал что-то среднее между 2 и 4 миксом, оба звучат в целом хорошо. но 4 немного глуховат, а 2 ярковат. нужно что-то среднее. И я понял что я мало беру за свою работу, послушав эти треки)))
Mix 2 to me sounded brighter than Mix 4. I thought 4 was overall a good mix but the top end in Mix 2 did it for me. I ranked the rest as you did. I wish I could mix as well as you.
If we were to define "ruining the feel" as making something unlistenable, then quantising Gavin Harrison definitely didn't ruin the feel. It still made it sound far worse though imo. I think there far too many producers who assume that just because something looks better on a grid, it must also sound better. It's completely case by case imo and to me, the idea that you should "always" quantise the drums I consider to be an example of production dogma.
someone send the fiverr guy link
The vocal tone in the auto tuned versions sounded a bit warmer than the non auto tumed. To me that helped them sit in mix a bit better tonally and also let the upper mids of the instruments come across better (less masking).
all of this is true, BUT: offensive mixing mindset is wayyy easier to have when your raw tracks are already sounding good, and if the production is on point. often amateur mixers deal with amateur recordings and/or productions, so they basically feel the need to try and fix a fundamentally bad song. Then, even IF they do, they end up with a boring mix, due to no perspective, no practice and no experience in making things exciting. my point being: get really good at recording and producing first (or have someone do it for you) and only then every mixing tutorial/tip you can find online will start to really make sense
So enjoyed the interview at the end - what great insights
Reading Scripture? AWSOME!!!
I knew feom the start that you’re gonna make it here on Yt.Been watching your vidz from the start !!!! You are just utter professional \m/
It sounds to me like you know your speaker intimately. That is awesome!
These are still valid in today's world for mixing. Your translation will be cleaner and more balanced. I use a second pair of monitors for mastering which helps me check the low end information and super highs, but that is for the last 5-10%!
great reciew thanks
What do you recommend for studio headphones?
wow, just wow..... any idea at all how to actually operate an 1176????
Not the best test with this modern track. Autotune a classic vocal, Queen, Elvis, Dianna Ross…certainly won’t improve those songs.
Recently there was a plan to build a new village on this old base. Road access isn’t that great, so the government offered the council a grant of £30m to sort the necessary infrastructure. Council said no 😮 Bad for folks wanting a home in one of the most expensive areas of the country (try being a first time buyer there 😬), but good for those of us wanting somewhere cool to explore!
The kid, with the least experience of what music "should" sound like, chose the untuned 2:23
Great video and discoveries! I don't tune my vocals much anymore after watching a a documentary about Brian Ferry and Roxy Music! I didn't realize until watching this that he sang flat , which made the music unique. With myself, I have noticed that tuning makes my vocals sound worse the more out of tune I sing. On the other hand, it makes my vocals sound better the less out of tune I sing.
Lol man you're hammering the compressors on the vocals
I was a tape off when I was an apprentice how I don't miss those days
WOW
Hey Jordan, great video! I'm so happy you love your new studio. It was a pleasure working with you and I'd like to thank you for trusting us to complete this beautiful studio for you, it looks absolutely stunning.
