I've Never Seen Snow Like This. Snow Truck Camping In The Coldest Weather We Have Seen.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Snow camping is always tough, but this was next level for us. The low temps and high elevations are something that we don't get exposed to much here in Washington state. Idaho is beautiful, remote and kind of dangerous, but it was the perfect setting for a humbling camping trip in the snow. Huge thanks to @outdoorauto and @muddybeards for joining me on this crazy adventure. Finding friends that are willing to camp in -5°F is more difficult than you might think! Enjoy the video!

@strykerentllc I've never carried extra fuel. And I mean not once in the last 20 years of wheeling, lol. This was the first time it became a problem. The Tacomas are really bad on fuel, but under normal trail riding, it's never been a problem. That said, after this trip I'm going to figure something out. Either a bigger tank or some small gas bags to keep in the bed on big trips.

Chains are great for the hard stuff like frozen hard pack, ice, or when you can dig through the snow down to the ground under it otherwise they chew through the soft stuff and leave you hanging on the frame... Once you punch down through this snow to something the blocks might grab onto, you want chains to be able to pull you forward. The blocks will be packed with snow by that time and just spin on a half inch of never-ending little ball bearings. You don't want wide tires like these guys are using as those just turn into toboggans that drift around forever. This is not sand or rock or mud or wet coast cement. You'll never build up a compressible base on it. A particularly heavy vehicle with tall sharp tires and chains is the best way to get through it.

I'm from scandinavia, the idea of using chains on loose snow is alien to me, especially in cold powder that doesn't compact very well. They're only ever used on ice, or hard packed snow with a vehicle heavy enough to get traction.

Idaho is not the only place that has dry, cold snow. Pretty much the entire length of the Rockies is the same. I lived at 9,000 feet in Colorado for 32 years and I never owned a snow shovel. I just used a broom to get the snow off my deck.

One tip I have, when resorting to the big full throttle huck when braking trail, keep your hand on the shifter, grab neutral as soon as you are stopped or even just before. This negates the spring effect of the torque converter which kinda unloads as you spin out causing you to dig in and need to get pulled out.

@@NAPAuniversalJoints maybe not the greatest choice of words, but I get what he's saying. Its that with the box in D the thing is always trying to rotate the tyres and since you will be using very little (if any at a ll) brake to avoid creating snow ramps, torque will find its way through the converter. Great tip Scoobie!

  • @Scoobienorth

    @Scoobienorth

    5 ай бұрын

@@NAPAuniversalJoints I’ll break it down differently. If you spin to a stop in sugary snow with smallish tires and deep snow, you stuck. By shifting to neutral you let the last bit of rotation without power so the tire will roll on top of the snow vs digging in under power. If you got plenty of tire on a lighter rig it’s not necessary.

Sub-zero snow = best snow. Even ice starts to get some traction back the further below 0 you get. As a trucker, I'll take super cold temps all day. Second best only to Summer conditions. I run Montana twice a week every week, spend more time there than at home. Not uncommon to be pushing fresh snow without a plow in sight. Snow/ice near that 32f mark just becomes nightmare fuel.

I'm an old Nodiak with the last 40 years in MN. Both states don't have the elevation climb as Idaho. In ND add a 20+ mph wind across the snow at -25 degrees and there gets a hard crust with sugar snow below. That's a bad mix. Break through the crust and you get to spend some time with the business end of a shovel.

The more I watch others snow wheel just reinforces that (Shaun on tracks, your stuff). Don’t get me wrong, snow 4WDing is fun, but let’s be real, we always want to get to the top of the mountain. Going inches while burning lots of gas isn’t that much fun. I keep seeing these guys with a snowmobile in their truck bed. That might be the way. I am glad you finally got into some snow like I have to deal with in Northern Wyoming! I only have 35's on my locked up TJ but I have found many times where 3 psi works and others where chains with ice bars on all 4 is the only way to make progress. The worst snow is usually mid January and the snow is impossible to make a snow ball. Sometimes we go play with our ATV's on tracks and give up because all we do is get stuck. You know it's bad when you can't walk over the snow with snow shoes because you just fall through. Back to the 4x4 stuff, once the temps warm up a bit the snow changes and you can get some floatation again. Go prepared for everything and maybe something will work! I am sitting in my recliner thinking about a snow day in the Jeep, but yesterday morning was -33F with a high of -6 and this morning was -24F, so I think I will throw another log on the fire and wait to get out of this polar vortex. I really want tracks for my Jeep!

This is the kinda snow I learned to snow wheel in. Me and my buddies were all on 31s and it was a mess of recoveries. Got maybe 200 feet from the pavement. Had a ton of fun, but definitely under built for the Idaho snow.

I love seeing people experience southern Idaho/northern Utah snow. That’s actual powder. Best luck for me was always “XJing it”. Low psi, no lockers, & skinny pedal. Good times.

I am SO jealous. I live in Michigan's lower peninsula and we don't have any challenging trails unless you are on private property, at a park, or get a bunch of snow. I've been waiting months for some good snow, and it just showed up on Wednesday. And... I immediately sprained my ankle wed afternoon. So, I'm riding crutches, and dont dare go wheeling because I couldn't recover myself. Thanks for another awesome video to watch while I can't do any wheeling of my own.

Farmers generally run the chains on the front if your front end parts and drive line are strong enough. Works quite well.

Nate my name is Eric. I live 7.3 miles from Rubicon trailhead. Anyways if you go to a 42 I recommend the mtr if you can find it. It is far superior for snow wheeling than any other 42 out. It is lighter and way for flexible and works waaay better than a Toyo or nitto. I'm on toyota running gear also and it's purpose built snow rig. I went from a 42 mtr to a 44 sts. And now it's unstoppable. I have never seen a tire work so good in the snow ever. It's light it's flexible and dosnt dig no matter if it's powder or Sierra cement like we have here most of the time. I went to kelowna and wheeled with a big group of big tire rigs as it was a bucket list trip . Thanks Joel. Anyway I herd you say 42 for the snow . Don't make the mistake of going with anything other than a mtr. I would highly recommend the 44 sts as it's similar in weight and just slightly bigger than the 42 mtr but it's way more flexible and works x2 or more in every situation. Just my 2 cents from a snow wheeler . Keep up the cool vids and if you go with the sts your snow wheeling capabilities will x10 itself.

I said in your tire video that I prefer an MT style tire for snow wheeling. Here in N. Idaho, we get the sub zero temperatures. MT style tires to me help push you through the powdery snow where losing traction just sinks you. You probably either didn't read my comment, or thought I was an idiot, but you should try that instead if chains. We can always tell a beginner up here when they start throwing chains on, because they are either too loose and fall off, or they act like a set of MTs. Usually, beginners don't know to go slow and let the tires bite, si they shoot roosters and dig, where as my MTs pull me up onto the snow as my rear tires are biting traction to keep forward momentum. Just a thought for future sub zero snow wheeling. Great video. Oh, I use one if those q50 watt heaters for my camp setup in my truck run off of an isolated deep cell battery. They work good until the Temps get closer to zero. 27° is my closest recorded night, with a mattress and a heavy blanket in the bed of my truck with a camper shell and twin matress.

Nate, One of the bigger reasons full sized vehicles are not liked by snowmobiles is that the tracks and ruts you leave are exceedingly difficult to negotiate with a snowmobile, especially after 24 hours when your ruts have set up. In fact, most novice and many intermediate riders find these ruts unmanageable. I’m not passing judgement, just telling it.

As soon as I saw that there's an old snowmobile tracks, I knew you guys were in for a struggle. You need to bust the crust/old packed snow in that sugar unless you have the magic floatation of tire size and vehicle weight, I've never found it. March and plus temperatures are the best snow wheeling conditions for me. 😉
