Caught In a Storm. Snow Camping In a Blizzard Gets Dangerous.

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I want snow! Today we find DEEP snow way up in the mountains of Washington state and then we camp in it. The weather was nuts, we had to recover strangers and we find the deepest powder of the season. Winter overlanding can be dangerous, but if you are prepared... it's pretty hard to beat!

Did you know that Mt. Baker holds the world record for snowfall? 1,140 inches (95 feet) in the 1998-1999 winter. Pretty crazy.

Props to you guys helping that person out! Quick, wholesome, feel good story: I was heading home from work, hit an object in the middle of the road and blew out my rentals tire. I was like a mile from home. Limped it, but had stopped at an intersection with 3 other people who hit that same object. It was a girl and her husband, they got a tow. Some other guy who got a tow. Then me and this little old lady. i wanted to make sure she was able to get home safely but she said she didnt have any money or anything for a tow and frankly didnt know how to call for a tow. She got her husband on the phone and he said screw a tow, he will just replace the tire with the spare in the trunk. He was 40 mins out and I checked her trunk for the spare and dear lord this lady stuffed everything she could fit in that car and there was no easy way to get the spare from the trunk. I told her to wait in the car, call her husband back and tell him to not worry about driving out to get it replaced, Ill replace it for free and much quicker and get her on the road and home safely. So I limp my car home, grab a spare, throw it on. I grab another full size spare that will work for her car and head back. Swap the tires, torque it down, and sent her on her way. I told her to not worry about money or anything or even giving back the tire, they can keep it. I didnt need it. But its stuff like that, that more people need to do. Help one another. Everyone just left her! Without a second thought! I was mind blown by selfish everyone else was. Good on you guys for helping that person back down the mountain.

Back in 2010 I had a fairly nice pretty new car that I didn't want to drive in the winter time anymore, and my good friend was in a Jeep ZJ Grand Cherokee phase. Really enjoyed the exploits in his, so I set out to find my own. Scored a 1996 Orvis Grand Cherokee with the 5.2 v8 and all wheel drive off craigslist for $250 that looked great but didn't run. Found a pair of connectors on the firewall that wouldn't fully click together, causing it to die randomly then restart after a tow, so I fixed this jeep for the cost of two zip ties. I put a fair amount of money into this jeep, rebuilt the front suspension, 3 inch lift, shocks, and 30 inch tires.. basically everything I could afford at the time. Back then, it used to *actually* snow in Kansas City, and hoooooly crap was that Jeep a monster in the snow. Despite every attempt, the only time I ever got close to getting stuck in "snow" was one night when a couple of us had a VERY bad idea to visit our favorite wheelin spot, which had a rather large hill you had to climb up to leave the spot. It had been raining for 3 days straight, started to freeze, then started to snow. I made it unassisted, but that was scary. One night on my way home from work there was this lady stuck in the middle of a very busy intersection during a pretty heavy snowstorm so I stopped and offered to pull her out, and that started a habit of mine for ten years every time it would snow, despite knowing it wasn't really a good idea for liability purposes. Jan of 2017 I drove the jeep to work, and about 11:30am decided that I was calling it a day and ready to head home to finish out my day there. Avoiding highways, I made a mistake in judgment choosing my route home, which found me "stuck" on one of the steeper hills in the city. This hill looked like the roadways on the walking dead, just stuck cars littered everywhere and I had no way to navigate past any of them. After assessing the situation, I got a couple people to move their cars out of the way so I could squeeze by, over the curb and up the hill in the grass. Started at the top, one car at a time pulling them the rest of the way up the hill until I'd cleared enough traffic people could get running starts and actually make it. Think I was there for nearly 3 hours pulling people out, and despite repeated attempts to refuse any sort of compensation, I finally had to give in and start taking some cash from people. Had zero intention of doing so, but made a pretty good deal of money that day. Number of years later found myself on the side of the road in my daily driver with two flat tires in the pouring rain and this really nice fella stopped to help me change a tire, and obtain a second spare. He wouldn't take anything for the help. Sorry for the long story, just wanted to share that it feels really good in todays world to pay it forward and have some complete stranger help me out.

Good to see you in my end of the state. I currently live in Oak Harbor and go up around Baker Lake and the South Skagit Highway area frequently. Haven't explored much off the Mount Baker highway yet.

Nate, I always love your adventure videos! Especially the snow wheeling ones! Snow wheeling is the best wheeling. No rig left behind. Its good to see that people still practice politeness in the PNW 😁🤘

Hell yeah dude. I went out in my lifted crv once in the snow, solo I ended up getting stuck. Had a guy come up 20 mins later saying he saw me go up and was concerned I might be out of my element. Pulled me out followed me back down the trail.

Last year we found a trail that was hood deep (about 5’) of fresh snow. Was pushing up and over the hood for miles. Best time so far.
