Going through a hoarder's hoard and eliminating it within the span of what appears to be only a day is absolutely catastrophic to an emotional or obsessive compulsive hoarder. I really, really hope she received some long term therapy for this.

Do you know what hoarders do with empty space? They fill it! Unless she gets help it’s not just going to go away.. she put on a brave face but I am sure this was devastating to her. I’m proud of her but I hope she also gets the healing she needs to overcome the impulse to hoard again.

My mother started hoarding after my baby brother passed away. She blamed herself, although it was not her fault. Prior to this, she was a neat freak, She was the most loving , kind, caring person you would ever hope to meet. However, my brother's death changed her. She never got over it. She also internalized everything and would put on a brave face even when she was unhappy. In the end, she fell asleep with a cigarette and had no chance. I thank God that our last words just hours before she died were I Love You and I Love You, Too. I tried to help her so many times and even rented a dumpster to clean her home when she was gone, but it only got worse. If she had fallen asleep with the cigarette and not been a hoarder, there would have been a good chance that she would have survived, however, her home was so filled with items, trash, clothes, etc. that she had no way out even if she would have woken up. She was only 56 years old. If you know a hoarder, please try not to judge them, as it will only make the situation worse, but try to be there and encourage them as much as you can.My mother was my best friend and I feel guilt every single day . You never know what you have until it's gone.

I have fibromyalgia, and moving around is difficult without pain. Because of that, cleaning baseboards and other things is hard. I am ready to hire someone to come and do it for me, and I think that for those who have a hoarding/cleaning/organization problem, hiring someone to come help for a few days is really indicated. I get overwhelmed also, when I see how much I need to do. I peck at it, but pecking isn't enough. I could do more, each day, and it would get a lot better. There is no reason to live in dirt/trash/too many things. Donate them somewhere. Let others get use from them. And get someone to come and help.

It's not so bad. She needs an organizer to help her. She doesn't have enough shelves. Most of the ones she does have are at least half empty. Also, a lot of the hoard is clothes. She needs to try on everything she has and give the stuff that doesn't fit her to charity. Then, if she puts her collectibles on shelves and in display cases, at least half the stuff on the floor will already be gone, especially if she gets rid of the empty cardboard boxes.

This is clean in comparison to most hoarder homes. There's actually space to walk in, it's partially organized and there's no garbage. A very common hoarder issue is a non functioning toilet and a refrigerator full of rotting food and bugs. I believe some hoarders are more severe in their illness and harder to treat. The thought of getting rid of something, even rotting food, is highly stressful for them. Another common thing with hoarders is a childish behavior. They throw a temper tantrum or just walk away when confronted with getting rid of their junk. It's very evident that they don't know how to handle adult situations and conversations.

I probably be a hoarder, too, but I hate to shop. If I don't need it, I don't buy it. However, I had friends & family give me gifts🎁 in the past & it's hard for me to throw them away. I beg everyone no gifts please, that includes Christmas🎄 & birthdays🎉, as well.

After a few years, her house is going to return to its original state of clutter as the cause of hoarding is not addressed and treated, thus there is no point in trying to help her clear out all those items.

Yes...I think a good approach is to say we'll take everthing out but not throw anything away...make your vital living space...then put in your minimal needs...also seeing other hoarders stuff that is not emotionally attached is also beneficial...it can be a disease and people can be extremely sensitive about some of their things...gentle is the way...cheers

That's very true. It's definitely a mental disorder. Therapy for hoarding as well as other issues is a good way for her to start to see things differently about her environment, put things in perspective, and change some behaviors. It's a great motivator and can initiate a clearer healthier state of mind. Then she'll be more likely to get some things done.

I have stuff, but I like it to be clean and nicely organised. I hate it when I can't easily get at what I need eg sheets of music to play. I think that if I were a wealthy person, I would not bother living in a conventional house. Oh, I might have as small neat home I would never actually spend time in, because I hate neat, tidy, minimalist type homes most like. It would be just if I had to meet somebody I don't particularly like enough to be on such friendly intimate terms that I would take them to the spaces that do mean something to me eg my shed, warehouse, we ork room, studio space etc. Which will always be cluttered and untidy, though not dirty, because hoarders are often doers, makers, creators, producers etc or they experiment or hold stocks of things they like eg scientific hoarders, wine collectors etc. If you are an interesting person, a doer etc, then this will invariably created some mess. I can spot a minimalist type a mile off now, after so many bad experiences with such types. And so, I ensure we meet only in special places set aside for any unavoidable interactions with such types. They never get to be in any spaces that are meaningful to me eg creative spaces. I do this partly because I find minimalist very boring and annoying but also to avoid any unnecessary friction because minimalist types seem to suffer from some sort of emotional disorder that makes them behave in a very annoying, aggressive, interfering, frustrated etc way, forever causing disruption and disturbing the peace, in their obsession with eliminating everything, ordering everything etc ie control freaking behaviours. I think they might be constipated and need a strong laxative, since they are so fixated on 'elimination' and they are forever complaining about the place being 'full of shit', which, to the normal, sane, balanced hoarder are simply things one needs in order to actually live life. Instead of doing what most minimalist do, after they have 'eliminated' ie just sit there bored, like stuffed pigeons, with nothing to occupy their minds/hands, looking for 'a relationship' to fulfil them emotionally because they are too dull and unimaginative to fulfill themselves, by doing, inventing, creativity etc, most of which involves 'stuff', whether it be materials, tools, machinery, technology, whatever... The sheer stupidity of many minimalist defies description. I once worked in a certain government department that advocated the paperless office and so all the manuals explaining proper procedures, how to do calculations etc were trashed with great zeal. But, then nobody knew how to do certain things when urgently needed and when the computers that were supposed to hold such information malfunctioned or it was simply impossible to retrieve it in a timely, reliable, easy fast way, as promised. Fortunately, I salvaged some of the manuals etc being discarded, just in case I needed to refer to them. I was the only one who could do certain things I learned from studying such discarded manuals. When others wanted me to show them how etc I just politely explained that it is all'in the manuals' they threw out and that now, it was for me know and for them to just 'ponder'. Or try your luck with impossible, slow, hopeless, malfunction g computer systems full of information. You can find out anything. Except what you need to know. I like manuals. I have many, on all sorts of topics. I only throw them out if they get superceded eg technology manuals, but things like machinery manuals or how to craft etc manuals never date. Most of what I know is self taught, from studying manuals, which proved far superior to stuff I learned in a formal classroom setting or even on the job. Such training is not always effective. But, supplemented with access to good manuals, well presented, it can be more effective, I found.

I know how that feels. All you have to do, is do one thing at a time. I do laundry one day, then pick up trash the next and organize. The next day I vacuum and wipe stuff down. If my depression isn't bad and I have the energy, I can do multiple things in one day, or even get a whole room squared away. It's hard but you can do it.

Stuff, vs life. I was honest with my mom (who's a hoarder), and gave her the hard truth that she didn't want to hear (that it's literally best to throw EVERYTHING out besides her 1 cat *fortunately she's not an animal hoarder, just a hoarder in general* and START OVER). She's like "I can't throw my life away!!!" (BUT HER STUFF IS THE ONE THING PREVENTING HER FROM HAVING A LIFE, getting rid of the stuff doesn't throw her life away, she's throwing it away by having stuff). I hate to say it, but I actually hate my mom because of this. I grew up in a shit environment (hoard filled home) and that is NOT a good foundation for ANYONE (let alone a teenager) to go through. Her hoarding started after my dad divorced her, so around 12 years old she started accumulating stuff. Made my life a living hell and caused damage to my physche that is still with me to THIS DAY (@ 32 YEARS OLD!!!)

I believe there was a better idea, they should have leased a small shop for her, for like 3 or 6 months, and called it "Hoarder", where she could put those items for sale at affordable prices. I bet if people knew her story, they would have been interested to buy. Plus, it would have avoided her the shock of giving away all the the stuff she loved at once and made her some money.

I feel bad for her son. It seems selfish to me.. I just wonder if staying in counseling will help her tackle the psychological problems so she can do this for her son. Her son may need a bit of help as well. I think it would be great if they could stick together for the problem. Just, please, don't put stuff in your son's area. She lives in a studio apartment (sometimes called an efficiency). There is only one room, with a small kitchen area and a bathroom. Part of the room is for sleeping, part is for a living area, minimal closet space. Since her son lives with her, space is at a premium. No privacy at all. It is understandable why it is so cluttered!
