I completely understand that. So much time, energy and passion goes into handmade quilts! You have an amazing eye for patterns and fabric and your techniques are solid. I’m not being a downer however do we ever really get paid what our pieces are actually worth in time+material+ talent. I feel like the market can’t bare that but I feel like you did well with your pieces. Well done. 🎉❤

Thank you so much for saying that! And you're absolutely right, it seems to be very hard for most makers/craftspeople to strike the right balance when selling their work. I'm hoping we can switch to making less but more durable, sustainable, ethical clothes. Then, it will seem normal to pay a fair price for them! And to look after, mend and appreciate them over time.

@@marikunastudio Your comment about caring for our clothes gave me an idea: Are there low-cost, value added items that can accompany the clothing items you sell? I like the matching pouch, perhaps a hair scrunchie or color matched mending kit with thread/buttons/patches . . . Also, perhaps adding your style touches to affordably thrifted items, like ruffles or colorful bias trim on jean hems/pockets or colorful pockets added onto T-shirts or sweaters? I am a hobby sewist and crafter and wish the market could support our ‘true’ worth ☮️

@@marikunastudio another piece of advice is to always always keep your sample and never sell it… then you will always have a garment to show and for someone to Tryon, so that they could custom order for example As to pricing here in the states, for example, Anita charges $.35 per inch of knitting a pair of socks, so that roughly comes out to be $129-140for a pair of socks For machine stitching I believe it comes out to some thing like $.06-$.09per inch. Then there is the old rule that you take the cost of your material times three and that’s what she would sell it for. Seems to work out but I just don’t get it.🤪 Never give away or discount your garment to someone for sale . It helps to ask yourself - would any of your friends sit and work 24 hours at $5.50 an hour… or even $10 an hour Let that reality get in your head we are talking 24 hours !! If that person wouldn’t spend 24 hours on you, then don’t spend 24 hours on them. They’ll have to learn how to sell themselves. Hope this helps .

@@marikunastudio Wow! Your designs and pristine tailoring is exquisite and top of the line!! Yet this was heartbreaking to watch… All that work for $5.50 an hour! I am a clothing designer, and I could write you a book giving you advice, but I’ll try to keep it short… You shouldn’t be making less than $30 an hour that means to sell an item for $150 you need to get it done in 4 hrs. = $120 plus approximately $30 for the fabric. = $150 Plus, you’ll need to add the cost of shipping and delivery finding and getting the fabric pre-washing the fabric making labels the cost of your machine, sheen maintenance, electricity on and on - you should at least add another $10 at minimum to every garment for the aforementioned. Thereby your garment would equal $160. So, as you can see to sew your jackets, you’d have to cut labor cost down by over, locking all your seams, and no bias on the edges instead because you’ve overlooked you topstitch the seams down, make your button loops, so your loops in and instead of hand, sewing your labels, and you need to machine stitch and if you don’t like that, just tack the four corners, get a simpler hangtag, you’ll also need to sew in fiber content, and washing instructions etc I know this might sound harsh but you’re undermining professionals by selling the garment you made for $5.50 an hour This is not a garment that was mass produced in China Even China wouldn’t sell some thing for $5.50 an hour! If you were to go the route of sowing in binding around all the edges and covering the inside seam allowances, etc. I would estimate you could get that done in 6hrs. Then add. And the cost of the fabric say $30 at minimum plus adding in $10 per garment. You’d be looking at your jackets selling for $190. Which I believe many people would buy. But it’s all about where you sell it! You don’t sell one of a kind designer garments at the farmers market so to speak. You don’t sell the best for nothing. Beyond selling online, I would take it to a gallery and do a showing there and or have your own boutique If you sell it in someone else’s boutique, they’re going to take 40 to 50% in which case I would sell the boutique the one where it’s over locked and no seam binding. Start researching online and find out what people are charging and get your prices up You have to accept that not everyone can afford your garments you’re gonna have to except that only the rich can afford your garments, and that your average person cannot. I would have assumed that you would’ve sold your jackets for $320 and the dresses for $200 minimum You have to accept reality and that you can’t spend your life‘s time and energy working for less than $20 an hour let alone six dollars an hour. That’s insane.! Well, like I said, I could write a book but I hope I helped you get a bigger picture. Good luck!

As a consumer and occasional sewer and granddaughter of a dressmaker/fitter, ive got a different take on price and value. While I agree that no experienced dress designer/dressmaker should work for $5.50 an hour, I dont think you have to take all the advice of someone who would charge $300 per garment. If fashion is ever to become sustainable, it must be affordable for many people. I would pay $200 for one of those jackets because a) that is a bit more than I can easily afford but I caN still pay my bills and b) I appreciate hand work. If you charged 23$an hour for 6 hrs that would be $138 for labor and $62 for materials and profit. You would still have to significantly cut your sewing time, but 6 hrs of labor vs 4 hrs would give you two more hours to pay attention to sustainability. Origami labels might be lovely, but totally unnecessary.

@@marianlinden9736 Thank you for sharing your take! It's great to get a sense of what people would charge/pay/value. All the things shown here (including the labels!) So I am figuring things out as I go and this was part of the experiment. Thank you for your support!

Cool. I have sewn all my life and lately been following a couple real estate channels in Itally and France. Just to see the area, small towns, in credible stone buildings! I followed one in Normandy, France first. Mostly farmhomes that caretakers of farm would have lived in. Properties divided up in strange ways but the scenery is great. Then A Home in Italy popped up and they have more homes right in the towns. We retired more rural in Southern California. Our small town doesnt have everything though like the ones in other countries. We do have bigger stores an hour south and north so plan out trips. Im selling here for first time on my life as the native tribe had a farmers market because everyone kept asking me where I got my jean bags from. I've been sewing and wearing all second hand most of my life. My mother made my sister and I dresses from her dresses. You can see that in pictures! Ok Im typing while video is on. Going to watch your creations. I want to make more dresses like yours but I cannot get any yardage so thinking to join materials like mens shirts or tshirts. I like the choice of ruffled sleeve. I have a velvet type hooding that did have elastic ruching (sp?) and its all stretched out. I may try doing that ribbon channel to fix sleeves and at waist. Im so going to subscribe and check out your channel.

Thank you so much! I felt like that texture/fabric would work well with that design and I do love it too.

I absolutely love your video. I vote for the dresses as my favorite, but I am partial to dresses. I love the sleeves on the cardigans. My family is full of quilters, what a great idea to use blankets. ❤
