Bilbo's Patchwork Housecoat from The Hobbit: One Robe To Rule Them All

The quest for the ultimate in fantasy-bounding lounge wear and a desire to use only recycled and repurposed textiles resulted in a three month long creation process that gave me a fabulous new patchwork robe and a new sense of appreciation for the community of my childhood home.
While this didn’t start out as a nostalgic project, that’s certainly what it ended up being, from making a garment based on a story that was read to me as a child from the books gifted to me by my uncle, to the heirloom sewing machine that I learned to sew on, in the city and house that I grew up in, this was both a literal and metaphorical coming home… and I ended up with a super comfortable robe with a Twirl Factor that is off the charts!
Come with me as I recreate Bilbo’s Robe from “The Hobbit” (I don’t dare say “Lord of the Rings”, lest the Tom Bombadil gang comes for me). If this project inspired you to create your own version, or even to tackle a similar project - maybe a different patchwork or quilted garment from recycled materials - please be sure to find me on social media (Instagram is perhaps the easiest way to contact me) and let me know, I love seeing other people’s works!
The patten for the patchwork squares was created by me, to give the illusion of randomness, and I think it worked very well. The patchwork doesn't seem to have a discernible pattern, yet I didn't loose my mind trying to sew it together. The pattern is available for purchase from my KoFi store (ko-fi.com/s/c7b0f2c44e), along with a little instructional PDF with some suggested assembly methods and techniques.

    I'm of the same mind! This woman is a treasure trove of talent! The filming and prosing were quite delicious - as beautiful as the robe at the end. I would be so proud to wear a robe as fine as that. Although I might not find it worn often here in Central Florida where our few days of "winter" are usually borne by wearing sweatshirts and socks over sleep pants! 😂

    Oh, so true! I'm a bit heartbroken that I had to leave it with my parents (it was far too heavy to come back overseas with me), because I could REALLY use it starting.... right about now, as it starts to get colder. But it just means I can look forward to using it once I leave CPH! And also, thanks so much for that song title - I'm sure you noticed it was one of the first ones to appear in my video, as well as another by the same artist, and it's just so perfect for the calm hobbitsy vibes... really appreciated it!!

    Well, I think I technically could have fit it in the suitcase with some cramming, but it was also that I already have SO much stuff that needs to come back with me at the end of this contract, including a wool winter coat I made that's even longer and heavier than this robe, so I was also thinking about trying to make my life easier in the future, when I have to pack up and ship out.

I have made my "confinment skull crochet blanket" and added a free pattern in the middle a crocheter made during quarantine, with little hearts, to remind to stay close with the people we love, and this blanket is very special for me. Shannon that's a lovely name! My stepdaughter shares your name as well!... I guess that drew me to watch! I'm a quilter and I recycle loads of fabric! I sew on a Janome Workhorse 3000 model. It's just fine I keep it busy. You see I started sewing in 1970.. My Mum said one day I time to learn to sew..! I said"What"!!? So I made a pair of curtains for my bedroom. Purple with white daisies! Shannon I was hooked! Well back to 2023.. I just finished 4 Prairie Point Table Runners for family gifts. I love your Hobbit Robe! Best wishes Bonnie Ohio 😊

    The longer I watched this video, I became more and more amazed. The collaboration between crafters, the meticulous attention to detail, the charming narration with LOTR and Hobbit references sprinkled in, the cozy rainy days, and your sweet dog! This is probably my favorite sewing video that I’ve ever seen. I’ve been dreaming of making a patchwork robe, and yours is almost exactly how I’d always imagined it. I’m only just now starting to learn quilting from my aunt, and have been sewing garments on and off for only a couple years, but I’m saving this video for inspiration and help for when I start my own project. Thanks for making and sharing this. :)

    This woman is a treasure trove of talent! The filming and prosing were quite delicious - as beautiful as the robe at the end of the most epic sewing video these eyes have seen. I would be so proud to wear a robe as fine as that. Although I might not find it worn often here in Central Florida where our few days of "winter" are usually borne by wearing sweatshirts and socks over sleep pants! 😂 I was rabbit trailing through vintage sewing channels and found you. This is a stunning project and an epic production. Patchwork and Tolkien. They go together so well. I fell in love with Tolkien when I read The Hobbit at school, aged 11. Then I read The Lord of The Rings, and still reread it every summer. 50 years later, I fell I love with patchwork when I learned how to sew after I retired from teaching. All your wonderful references to Tolkien's work as you created your 'hobbity' housecoat filled me with joy - a perfect soundtrack to this creative masterpiece. x Amazing x😊

    I'm going to be in church, but will be on to watch later in the afternoon. I'm very excited to see how you did this delicious thing! (Edit) And here I am! It's absolutely fantastic!!!! I'm currently making a set of jammie pants of green plaid flannel which will be followed by my own robe! I found a cream upholstery padded and backed medallion-embroidered velvet for a steal. I'm aiming for the same shape as you got, but more sleeve movement. I'll be binding the seams as no other finish is really practical with the velvet already padded and lined for me. What I used to bind remains to be seen, but it will surely be a snuggly robe for the ages.

  • @ShannonMakes

    @ShannonMakes

    2 жыл бұрын

    Oh, your plans sound absolutely lovely, and I agree that the velvet can provide it's own challenges, but it sounds like you have a solid idea of how you want to handle it, and I'm sure the resulting project will be delicious! I can certainly recommend the pattern that I used (with the caveat that I hated the bust dart, and didn't use it because it was chunky and not delicate at all), so if you are still hunting for a pattern, you could easily use this one and modify the sleeves to have some more movement. Ultimate question: contrasting binding, or subtle, similar-colored???

  • @adedow1333

    @adedow1333

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@ShannonMakes Thanks for the recommendation. I think I would find similar problems with the darts. as for binding, that depends entirely on how I handle the lapels and cuffs. If I use same material, then the binding needs to match. But if I use contrasts, then obviously we would need contrasting binding!

    Thank you!! The sewing machine is a 301 and it's a family antique that I love (although I just found the exact same model for free on the streets of Montreal, so now I have one that lives with my parents and one that lives with me!!). I'm glad to hear that you got your sew-jo back, good luck on the quilt block!

    Hi Shannon! KZread knows I like WWII, so when your "Spies, Socks, and Soldiers" came up, I had to click it. I've now spent most of the last 6 hours knitting a shawl (casting off finally!) and watching your videos (I've commented on a few already). Something about this video, the way you narrated, the content, the pattern... hit me in the feels. Thank you for sharing this adventure. ~K from San Francisco

    Aww, thanks for the lovely compliments, and I always love to hear what my viewers are working on while I keep them company! I hope that you'll stick around for other videos, even though your project is finally finished!!

    Beautiful housecoat. You could use your leftover scraps to make a quilt. ❤❤
