I Try Micro Four Thirds For The First Time | Lumix GF1 & Sigma 19mm f/2.8

I traded my way to an "old" micro four thirds Lumix GF1 camera with a Sigma 19mm f2.8 lens. This was my first time shooting this format and while I had good fun doing it there are some cons to the system which I go through in this video. Micro four thirds has intrigued me for a while and whist I am sure I'll stick with the system, the camera may change.

If you're going micro four thirds you'll be much better off with a newer body that has in body image stabilisation to help you take longer exposures handheld. Some of them even have sensor shift high res mode where it combines multiple exposures and repositions the sensor slightly each time to create a much higher resolution image.

Thanks for the comment Neill. To be honest with you this camera is going on Wednesday and I’m upgrading already. I just wanted to get something cheap and cheerful to see what it’s all about. The lens I like. The camera I find fiddly and while it’s alright for what it is. I would like some newer tech in one. It’s never going to replace my 6D but for those days I don’t need all of that with me it was nice to try something a bit smaller.

I've got both the GF1 (oldest Lumix rangefinder) and a GX85 (modern with IBIS). They each have their own character and uses. The GF1 is excellent for taking film-look photos SooC. It's well built and made in Japan. I must say, it's very good for stills. The GX85 is my all-rounder camera. Great for video. Has no AA filter so ultra sharp. But made in China. If I had a GF1 before any of my modern cameras (I also had the GF7 and other ones), I may have stuck with it rather than "upgrading" as it's more than capable of going against any modern camera today.

I found the weight savings and the price of the lenses to be the greatest benefits of an MFT camera. You can get very sharp and optically really good lenses for a fraction of the larger sensors systems prices. I also bring my MFT camera much more readily with me, since it fits in smaller bags, and weights "next to nothing" compared to a full Nikon/Canon setup.

I enjoyed using it while I had it. I liked the form factor which led me down to picking my M6 which I use to vlog with now. I think I was so used to Canon cameras the Lumix layout threw me off a little.

Switching from Canon APSC to Lumix MFT transformed my photography into a more relaxed, mindful experience. Initially, I was underwhelmed, but I never sold my MFT gear. Now, I own several Lumix/Panasonic cameras, from the ZS7 to the latest models, all producing excellent quality photos. For me, the compact nature of MFT encourages a calm, spontaneous approach, allowing me to focus on capturing the perfect shot directly in-camera with minimal processing.

MFT is a wonderful system. Your back will thank you. It brings a fun factor back into photography to work with smaller gear. Sure you need a couple of extra stops of light, but then the smaller size means that faster lenses become more practical. But the most wonderful thing is that there is such a huge range of lenses possible to use. You can easily discover old FD, or manual focus Nikkor’s, or exotic Russian lenses that become easy to use because of the manual focus assist features on Lumix cameras. Sure it is fashionable to bash MFT on KZread with clickbait doom and gloom, but there is good reason why MFT users tend to love their gear. Enjoy, and welcome to the dark side.

Thanks for watching and for the comment. I tend to take the “such and such is dead” videos on here with a pinch of salt, as you say it’s all click bait. This was just a first outing and initial impressions more than anything. I think some of my frustration was more around using an unfamiliar camera. I’ll be sticking with the system, I love the lens, but the body will be upgraded this coming week. I can’t wait to see what my Helios 44m-4 looks like on it though. That’ll make a nice portrait length.

You do have back button focus, it’s right there in front of you - AF/AE Lock. Go to Custom Menu 2 to set it up. You keep saying it’s “fiddly” but you’ve only had the camera for five minutes. Focus peaking wasn’t a thing when the GF1 was launched.

I really like the M43 system and will not be looking around for anything else, as long as that is around, after having started slowly with a GX7 in 2015. I also do enjoy the "vintage" models, of which the GF1 is a very well rounded example of, but I wouldn't rate it as trying M43 as such, it was 12 year old tech when you did your review, it would be on par with trying APSC with the Canon 7D and rate the system based on that. A middle of the road approach here would probably have been to use either the GX85 or the GX9. Both in current sale. Liked the video, though. Personally, I should have been bolder in the autumn of 09 and bought the GF1 instead of the Pentax K7. I dont know how many pictures I havent taken when out and about, with the Pentax resting on a shelf at home. :-)

I did end up with a GX7 for a while and I loved that camera. Used it more for video than photos but it was a very capable body. I also own a 7D and love using that thing. The whole GF1 thing was a little tongue in cheek really. I was trying to make a point that it doesn’t matter what you use as long as you’re having fun. I think with the GF1 I just didn’t like the camera. The GX7 however was a joy to use. I ended up selling it to put towards a Canon M6 for video - I liked the form factor but buying into a new system proved too much in the end, given the M6 adapts easily to my Canon lenses. That being said I got some great photos of the moon with the GX7, a 100-400 and a x2 extender 🤣

I buy used cameras. I got rid of my Cannon 5D Mark III because it was the size of a toaster. I have a Fuji XPro 2 and an Olympus EM 1 Mark II. I love them both. Which one I take has more to do with the situation. If I'm shooting street at night with moving subjects, the Fuji's larger sensor edges out the Olympus, but with stationary subjects, the Olympus produces much sharper images do to the stabilization. I can shoot ISO 200 on the Olympus hand- held in the dark.

@@ChrisBaitson I hope you like your GX9, it's a fantastic camera. So quick, so reliable, and stunning quality, it feels so sturdy. Just one thing to note, if you're trying to get exposure, even the GF1 was doing this, on the little scale when you were adjusting the shutter speed, the blue areas are where it's exposed properly and the red are where it's too low. I love that the Lumix cameras do that, so you can adjust accordingly. I love my GX85.

Well, the 25mm is focus-by-wire and adjusts according to how fast you turn the ring. It was the first focus-by-wire lens I owned and I think it's pretty great honestly. I found the friction to be spot on since I don't want to use much force when making very fine adjustments.

Very well, the truth is very rarely told about the f-number value in M43. Basically, because of Marketing, instead of taking the physical measurement of the value of the aperture, they invented a nominal one to "compete" with full frame. A 2.8 lens at M43 is actually an f5.6 (x2 as the crop factor). Let's say the M43 guys took that license. But with the arrival of digital photography, all manufacturers invented their own ISO level, because since film is no longer in charge, everyone does what they want.
