Well you guys seem to really be twisting my arm here, as much as I never want to look at another bottle again haha. Perhaps I’ll have to suck it up and give it another go. What I need is the deep pour stuff which is what I thought this was going to be.

I think it's worth another try but with the deep pour resin.

See.. This really speaks volumes to your character. It takes a special kind of person to show when things don't happen how they are supposed to instead of only showing the best works. I think it's awesome to hear you say that you're proud of it. I absolutely love your content. Keep up the good work! Also, do you edit your own videos? You fried my dang brain with the whole “first pour 24 hours before 48 hours after the second layer on the 3rd pour then 24 more hours for the 1st 3rd layer on the second pour 12 hours earlier...”

You know what I really love about this whole video is you've given everyone a look behind the usual "perfect" KZread project. Everyone now gets a chance to learn from your mistakes, which is great. I try to include my mistakes in videos as well as what I try to fix my mistakes. So I guess what I'm saying is the project was great and I respect your decision to show the whole thing.

Resin always scares me big time!!! I had a resin catastrophe the first time I tried to make a water scene and it has haunted me ever since. You took the disappointment so well here and I always think it's so valuable to see other artists share their struggles. We can see we are not alone when things go wrong and it can even happen to talented professionals like yourself! I hope you had a great holiday!

Thank you for showing this project even if it didn't turn out the way you wanted. (Makes you more human again - from a crafters point of view ;)

I use the Alumilite Amazing Clear Cast for my deep pours. It takes 48 hours for cure, and it's great for water features. You can also do layers with it and they have been seamless when have. Just watch for the usual bubbles and pour in a long thin stream.

I like that you still showed off your process and product, even if it didn't work out like you planned. That takes humility, and I think it helps newbie crafters gain perspective. Keep it up. :-)

The idea is just super! But they don't learn without mistakes )) And the imitation of snow in this case is better to do with paint or crystal pastes. I will look forward to attempt number 2)) Success in business and happy holidays!

Cool idea, even if the execution had its problems. I do think grinding the sphere down to look like ice was a great idea and looks pretty cool. Just needs one more iteration to get the inside of the resin looking how you wanted. Cheers!

Uploading a failed project is very encouraging. Showing the amount of effort and time with a new medium is a great way to help your viewers see failure and learn how much its part of the process. Excellent video.

Really enjoyed this one. Even though it didn’t turn out the way you planned. It’s a shame that poring the resin is the last step on most projects, as there is so much effort put in before that stage. My last resin poor had a leak that damaged my last display. It is so disappointing when you have such high hopes. But lessons have been learned and on to the next project. Great vid. Ive been working with resin for a year now. For this project you need to work in layers. You need a thin viscosity resin and use a heat gun or torch to pop bubbles. The bubbles will make your finished piece look cloudy . You will need to secure your snow so it does not float. Redo this. You will love it. Another thing is using a vacuum chamber to rid your resin of bubbles. Use fishing line to make falling snow

I really like that you show us the whole process of "failling". Very often in this hobby things don't turn out the way you imagined them to be. Rarely they turn out better than you thought, but more often you will be (at least to some degree) dissapointed with the results. But I think making mistakes and learning from them is an essential part of model making. Only showing the best outcomes skewes the image and will frustrate people who try it themselves, especially beginners. In the end I like the ice chunk idea much better than the snow globe shape. I guess a little more clarity in the pouring resin and better distribution of the snowflakes and this display would have turned out great.

what I use to make heavy snow is baking powder / soda, glue and a bit of white paint.

The diorama concept was great; I'd say try again but find a way to do thinner/clearer resin. Maybe try experiment with little bits of resin? Some options I can think of - 1. Get two balls (inner, outer) to pour the resin ball in a more modest thickness 2. Spread/spray release agent on like a balloon and then layer very fine layers of some clear material, then pop the balloon and peel it; you could put a little bit of snow flock on one layer for blizzard effect. Final option is obviously just to buy a premade glass ball and stick your suspended snow to the inside

I am learning how to work with resin and really appreciate seeing videos from others showing the 'mistakes' and letting us know we aren't the only ones to have a project not turn out the way we expect. Also, living in the midwest, I would say this is an accurate depiction of a blizzard, snow everywhere and barely able to see objects somewhere in the white stuff lol.

You might like trying a silicone mold next time you want to do a globe and use deep pour resin like someone else suggested

Maybe you could use it as a soft mallet?

I gotta say, I also like seeing when projects fail. Not out of mischievousness or similar but because that's how we learn. And I think I really learned a lot from watching this video. Thanks! I've done a lot of projects where I messed up a step or assumed something that didn't pan out, but where I learned a lot while trying to fix it. Like the clearing up with the resin coat on the outside. I didn't realize you could do that. Nice. I definitely like to see how things can mess up and different techniques to try to fix them. I also never thought about layer separation issues with a resin like that. It's definitely something I'll have to remember and account for in future projects.

Hey thanks a lot for saying this. Means a lot to hear that. As far as the resin separation it had more to do with the snow mixed in. I guess it was wishful thinking hoping the snow consistency would be the same throughout each layer. Either way much to be learned and glad you felt so too.

its better to take your time with a project instead of rushing yourself and making mistakes. Also a vacuum chamber works wonders to get bubbles out and really get that clear look your were going for. Still thanks for showing us either way! Sometimes projects don't turn out like you envision them.

I think if you just cut the ball once and filled it with resin then dip the sculpture into it, also as the bubbles float to the top of the ball, once you flip it upright it will look like the snow falling to the ground

Hey, not every project is gonna turn out as good as one would want. It was still a cool idea (no pun intended). You can always try something similar, like a monster trapped in a chunk of ice, or some kind of magic crystal showing a scene inside it. Just need some deep pour resin, and maybe to run a quick test or two before going into the main project. Happy holidays!

Really interesting project here that seems like it might warrant more experimentation. One thought I had while watching this is that your groundwork would probably entrap very small air bubbles and might also interact chemically with the casting resin. If you try something like this again, I'd consider using a thin layer of resin or perhaps acrylic gloss medium to seal all the stuff down at ground level, then add layers of casting resin after that. I think you would also want to use a vacuum chamber to degas the resin after each pour to reduce bubbles in each layer. Had the resin allowed for a thicker pour, I suspect the result would have been worse, since you would have had even more problems with bubbles being trapped at the top of the globe. A completely different possibility would be to do your pour upside down, leaving the ground layer for the last layer of resin to be poured. This might keep many of the bubbles down at grass/dirt/snow level, where they might not be as obtrusive.

bummer. I hope you continue to try working with resin, it looks pretty cool.

maybe some of the chemicals in the snow or something else fogged up the resisin . So I heard alot about testing the resisn with anything you dont know how its gonna work with. Black Craft Magic once had a resin that heated up the base alot and fogged up intensely after boring it in with some paint.

You need a deep pour type resin. A pressure pot would go a long way for your resin pieces -- sucks all the tiny bubbles out.

That is a really cool idea Neil and thanks for sharing it with us. Just a quick FYI, the music used in between your commentary becomes much louder than you (think annoying commercial here ;o), is there anyway for that to be addressed? I would also like to say that I am really enjoying your ads and the humour you use. Spot on! Merry Christmas from another central prairie Canadian. :o)

Glad you posted this. I’ve had some epic art fails with this stuff. Just keep pushing! Resin is a monster to beat, but the outcome can be amazing. I’d say go for the full poor next time. Especially with 72 hour cure. Should be fine. Keep trying man! You’re an incredible artist and when it finally comes together it will become a new obsession.

I'm no expert on casting resin so this might make no sense what I say here but will give it a go anyway: Could you put the ball upside down and suspend the scene downwards in it? That way if snow floats to the top, it will simply land on the ground, which has snow already anyway. You might pour some resin all the way through the stand and let it come out in something that looks like a small hole in the ground? You would need a resin that you can cast in a single go of course.

I had considered that but I opted to go this way instead for fear of air bubbles being trapped in the terrain/model area. But yeah, i think the biggest issue was requiring a single pour resin. The upside down method would be worth a try though for sure.

For your first time attempting such a look with resin, I think you did a great job. If you attempt it again with a deep pour resin, might I suggest using an opalescent white mica and very small amount of very fine diamond glitter to give the translucent blizzard look on the interior of the globe. Then once finished, you could use paint or alcohol inks on the exterior,. Do a coating layer to encase it, then polish areas to dull parts out if wanted. Also, could use various tones of the alcohol ink to create a visual wind current inside your pour by dividing the resin into multiple cups before pouring and swirling a very small tip of a toothpick amount of alcohol ink, or your pigment if choice depending on the look you're going for and the resin you choose, creating a multi-toned translucent, finished piece. I've never made a solid chunk of ice snow globe before, but if I were going to attempt it this is how I'd go about it. A word of caution since it's resin and white is involved... yellowing with age. Something to keep in mind when choosing what you use to create the blizzard as well as which resin you choose if you're wanting it to look nice for more than a few years. I really enjoy your channel. Your Sherlock video had me squeaking over the book binding mold. Thank you for pointing out to people that they should try to do things they want to do. No one gets it right all the time. I dare say perfecting the art of making mistakes look intentional is a desired skill of all creators. I really enjoy that you just go for it, big and bold. Definitely looks like a blizzard

Resin is not nearly as scary as its made out to be if using the correct kinds. A deep pour would be perfect for this and a miniscule amount of "snow" will work to get the effect you want and still see the scene. Finish off with a quick glaze like you did to get the gloss effect. But you did learn some neat effects you can utilize later on...

Still took some effort. Respect.

the problem is that the air bubbles couldnt escape the mould. its a important step so the next time give it some openning on top and let it be like that for a few hrs and when u see that the air bubbles inside has escaped, u can cover the opening and let it dry

I make some LARP/geekery props, from time to time. Another skin layer of icky green or ochre, and this would make a great noir/occult type prop, especially with the light inside. It may not have been where you meant to go, but the destination turned out kinda cool

You should totally give this another go, but using deep pour resin this time. Really nice idea, and grinding it down to look like ice was a fantastic idea. Just a shame the resin sort of screwed you over on this one

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it before, but would a vacuum work to remove bubbles from the resin pre-pour?

Resin is strange stuff, it can react in ways you don't expect. I'm sure you will find a way to get it right next time. Maybe give it a resin film in some way before casting? Not sure

So, I really like the shape you ended up with, it's just a shame this didn't work as well as hoped. I wonder if many more, far thinner layers would work better? Obviously, that would then have a far higher cure time, but it may have looked more even with just a tiny sprinkle in each, as opposed to the almost opaque layers you ended up with as the flock floated up. I wonder how tile grout would have worked instead of flock? Also, going with a slightly smaller design may also work better as that would reduce the amount of resin needed anyway. This was a good idea though, and practice makes perfect.
