The fact with Luminar AI you still have complete control, you do not need to use the AI features. The AI learns as you use it and overall I prefer Skylum Luminar IV and AI for 99% of my processing. including my astro stuff. Plus this is only the first version of the software, Skylum have a habit of improving their stuff over time.

As you say, the AI tools can be great to add a “look” to a nightscape image or perhaps for enhancing contrast in deep sky shots. Once you have some settings you like you can save them as user favourites. I’ve got a number created with the previous Luminar 4 which I had to import into AI. I apply them onto a separate stamped layer to blend them in with Lighten mode and reduced opacity, to add Orton effects. Or add them as smart filters. But do watch what the AI tools are doing down at the pixel level. With DeNoise AI I find that yes, it removes noise, but can add a lot of patchy artifacts. The AI hasn’t been trained on starfields and deep sky objects it seems, so it can apply effects very unevenly. Luminar might be similar on some images. Pixel peep! I suggest always applying them in a way you can remove them, or back them off or mask them. Clear skies!

Thank you Trevor for this very informative video! I’m using Luminar AI for general purpose photography and I haven’t used it for astrophotography yet. I’ve also seen a tutorial for another software, Affinity Photo which I thought was only for general purpose photos as well but this one even supports stacking too! I love the simplicity of Luminar AI and I found it to be significantly faster than the previous version 4 that I also have. Keep up making amazing videos!

I see this software as an addendum to already processed photos. I love what I can do with other software, but I see this as something that can give my efforts an added "visula punch", which takes it into the artistic realm. There are the purists who prefer 'actual', and there are the visionaries who appreciate what one can do with the wonders of the universe. This software fits a nice 'inbetween' realm. Thank you for the demo. P.S. I am a Mac/Apple person (preferably), but have enough experience to use PC. Does this software come in an Apple platform edition?

I like Luminar 4 for editing, have no complaints so I might give this a go. I just need clear skies so I can capture some more data, missed Orion because of clouds. Oh I could have gone out and shot single shots from a tripod here and there but I have a new Skywatcher HEQ5 Pro that has only been out 5 times since receiving it 6 months ago (damn new gear curse). Thank You Trevor. 😎🍻🍣🇬🇧

I likewise bought Luminar AI....before I realized Photoshop already had a Sky Replacement function which is what Luminar AI impressed me with. Frankly, I so rarely dabble with other plugins that I tend to forget I've got Luminar, but the few times I did play around a little on an astrophotography image, I was intrigued by the results and just need to return to it with a bit more diligence sometime.

I haven't gotten into astro photography yet. I intend to in the future though. I bought this luminar ai back in December when it was on sale and was able to combine a discount code with the sale price so it didn't cost me that much. I feel ripped off by them. It's like a lead in to get you to buy more "templates". Sure you can create your own and use them, just like you can create presets in lightroom and photoshop and use them in one click. But I've found that for landscapes and bird photos that I do luminar ai is an inferior product to lightroom and photoshop. I thought the sky replacement would be great, but it does no better than the one in photoshop. The sky augmentation in luminar is crude and you can only add one object such as a balloon, or flock of birds or airplane or whatever is in the collection that they have or whatever you add to the collection of objects. But, you can add only one of them! You can't add a hot air balloon, and a flock of birds. Not unless you save the image, then open it again in luminar, to add the other object and when you do that, you can't adjust the first object because it's now baked into the image! It's just as easy to add whatever you want in photoshop using png files with transparent background or black background and blend modes on the objects. I've used it two or three times and I don't even use it anymore, I wasted money buying it and wish I had that money back.

Ok, Luminar folks, I have been using Luminar 2018 for years and Trevor has exposed the deficiencies of Luminar when it comes to astroimaging. Affinity Photo "got it" by adding an astro-stacking function so why not Luminar? As it is, my workflow is 1) Affinity photo for stacking lights, darks, bias and flats 2) Import the final image into Luminar and work with it there. PLEASE, add this star-stacking feature AND a star-removal tool that allows us to work with the nebulas then add in stars for the final image... what say ye, Luminar? Thanks, Trevor, for this video, well done!

It looks like really interesting software for last step tweaks but I wish a company like this would make software specifically to take the Deep Sky Stack, and bring it all the way to the end point. For me adjusting the curves and coaxing the right contrast and detail out of a DSS stack is the hardest part; and I love your guide for doing it in photoshop but even with that help it's still a lot of work and trial and error and the learning curve is steep. If an AI program could anticipate and ease the process of progressively "narrowing down" those curves to the object you photographed it could help so much. I think the technology is there, and I think the interface is good. It's really just a matter of a software developer finding a way to merge the two with the ideal learning curve and ease of use. This software looks nice, and it's a step in the right direction. But it's also "close, but no cigar."

About the only thing I use Luminar AI for my astrophotography is the Denoise and maybe Structure. Affinity Photo v1.9.1 is much better for start to finish astrophotography (from stacking to final edits), but I suspect that PixInsight would be better for post processing (if I ever learn how). I'm noticing that some people using PixInsight are still putting finishing touches with other photo editors.

Software may not be prime time yet, the fact you had bars instead of user input fields already illustrates the limitation. AI is about learning, hopefully they aren't using it as a marketing gimmick. How can it learn if you are scrolling with a bar to make adjustments. It would need to see a large data set of users each "scrolling" on a certain template in order to try and figure out what might be best. However if that day set is from a bunch of beginner noobs (i.e. ME) that what the AI learns serves no value to actual professionals like Trevor. I would be impressed if Luminary took my old 35 mm photos and converted them into 20 mega pixel images. Anyways thanks for taking the time in sharing this video and showing us a little bit of Luminar my friend.

Luminar4 gave you more control than Luminar AI. L4 had layers. In some ways they dummy downed the software which is disappointing. I tried AI and decided on a refund. I was a loyal Luminar fan until the release of AI.

Not really convinced. Seems like a lot of this can be done simply by using selective curves stretches in PS. For me this takes away a lot of the creative freedom of editing.

I second this! I don't do it myself as I use my DSLR at the moment, but I have friends that want to dabble into this a little bit to see if the hobby is right for them. They try to use their phone and end up getting discouraged. I'd love to have a You Tube video from someone good at this to show them how to improve things.

1st of all, what is refactor?, 2nd newtonian is reflector, so what's the deal, 1-3 are correct but if you want to include telescope designs you probably wan't to read some atm forums...

You missed the whole point of how the curve slider works - the slider at the bottom provides adjustment of any point on the curve - you never picked a point on any curve, so you got a gross adjustment of thel whole curve. IF you had selected a point or multiple points on a curve, you can adjust them directly on the graph OR use the slider. You don't have to use the overall slider. So your comment about how elementary the curve adjustments appear was based on your lack of familiarity with the product and didn't do justice to the power of the tool being able to make any shape on any color curve. I love your work and recommend your site all the time, but you missed it big time with Luminar AI. BTW, most pros go straight to the edit functions and skip template selection if they're used to using photoshop, lightroom, etc. - especially on something like astrophotography.
