How To Make Stars Smaller in Adobe Photoshop [For Beginners!]
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video, I show you three examples of star reduction techniques in Adobe Photoshop!
Index:
1:34 Making a Star Selection
3:04 The Select and Mask Tool
4:30 The Minimum Filter
4:59 The Before/After
6:20 Dealing with Tough Selections
7:47 Removing Areas of the Selection
9:00 Saving a Star Mask Layer
11:05 The "Make Stars Smaller" Action
11:52 The "Enhance DSO and Reduce Stars" Action
12:50 Using StarNet++
Reducing star size in Photoshop can help better reveal your deep-sky object that lies underneath. The amount of star minimizing is up to you, but I have found this technique to make a dramatic difference to my personal astrophotos.
Here are the links I mention in the video:

Saved the best technique for last! I won't spoil it, but will just add that for adding the stars back 'lighten' blend mode without any masks works a treat. Or if you want to go crazy with bring up the mids, I do 'screen' blend mode and then just reset with curves.

Great video. Thank you for the amazing tips. 👏
hey astro backyard you are the guy who always inspires me to be an astronomer and each deep sky videos you give me flame sir . . Now I buyed my first telescope. thanks a lot
I bought the astronomy tools action set, as you've suggested in past videos, and its the best $22 I've ever spent on AP. Really useful. Thanks for the great info!!
Trevor, many thanks to you. This is exactly what I have been looking for. Your tutorials are always comprehensive and informative.
Thank you, Trevor! I've tried numerous techniques and your method yields the best results for my style. Very clean!
Such a good tutorial Trevor!
The pace at which you presented this tutorial was perfect! Not too fast and not too slow! Please keep them coming.
Genuine legend. Thanks for all your vids. Between you and Nebula Photos its almost like cheating.
You have no idea how much I appreciate this tutorial. All the others as well but this one is a game changer for me.
Thank you so much for this, I now use this all the time!
So helpful. Thank you!
Really nice tips!
A great tutorial, and the cleanest Iris Nebula ever!
This is one of the best edits I've seen for Astrophotography! And I love that it's all using stock tools and not having to buy extra filters or actions.
Fav workflow, thanks
amazing tutorial, thank you very much!
Thanks man really help me out
Thanks Trevor, I tried this on my own and it looks incredible.
This video has just bumpped up the look of my images ! THANK YOU !
wow - great tutorial
Amazing!!
Love this channel I've learned a lot thanks. Watch you all the time
Thanks Trevor, this is really a useful and effective trick to improve our beginner images.
Greatly informative tutorial Trevor!
Great depth Tutorial trevor!! Love The Images. Hope your Having Fun With Your Observatory so far, keep going, Clear Skies!!🔭
Solid techniques that are easy to use. Thanks bro!
Just saw tthis video. Outstanding and very cool to observe these tools in action!
Trevor, embarrassed to tell you that this is the first processing video of yours that I've watched. Fabulous job! Looking forward to having you at AIC 2022!
Great video Trevor. I have watched and learned from many of your videos over the past few years (probably this one as well). Your pace for going through this video was excellent. Not too hurried, with actions preceded by the why, and projected outcome. Nicely done! I'm sure many people have benefited from this one.
Very interesting video. Thank you
Trevor, I've been watching your videos off and on for the past year. All of them are excellent. Image processing is a fascinating subject. It's discussed by all subject matter photographers including astrophysicst. It's a unique and highly "charged" topic in some amateur and scientific communities. Michaelangelo was once quoted as saying; "A man paints with his brains, not with his hands" His wisdom it would seem, has survived 457 years and will continue for centuries without filter.
Great video Trevor... I'm gonna give this a try. Hopefully my adjustments turns out okay.. Clear Skies!!
Thanks Trevor, very helpful, I always struggle with the stars👍
wow this helps a lot thanks
Thank you so much for this video. Reducing stars was something left in my postprocessing. I use GIMP instead of PhotoShop, but I found everything you explained in your video. Wish you clear skies...
Thanks! I like your tutorials. MORE!
Damn!!!! That's awesome Trevor. I got photoshop just last week. Thank you for this! I love the *pop* nebulae have when you have very small stars
Great video. Paused it a few times to test out the techniques on some old images, and these tips really help. I also now know how to use the PS Actions properly (doh!) having seen you do it.
Excellent tutorial!! I used your first method on my Orion Nebula and reduced the sizes of the bloated stars.
greeeaat video on photoshop! love your content
Nicely explained Trevor! I’m still getting to grips with your tutorial I purchased! Thanks and Great work👍
Just discovered your channel, now addicted
Great video Trevor, also love it when other toobers chip in with advice, nice one Nico.

I know a Padawan should only have one master, but all we need is Dylan for the trinity!
After creating a starless layer I like to go to "apply image" and use the numbers to select a 1-10 difference (subtract) and then copy and paste that as a layer. I then blend it using "linear dodge add." That method gives much greater control. Reducing the stars is as easy and pulling a curve downward on the star layer which can remove star bloat as well depending on how the curve is used. The nicest thing about using "apply image" is that is adds most of the data back to the image that starnett removed.
Man, this first technique in Photoshop was hugely helpful. Recently upgraded to an M1 MacBook Pro and StarNet++ is unfortunately unable to run on the M1 SOC (for now), and even causes PI to crash when opening until you delete StarNet++ altogether. Much appreciated!
I'm 14 yr old and cuz of u now I'm so into astronomy. Thanks
Great tips! Thanks! A couple of PS tips to add that people might not be aware of - while for the video you need to show all the steps, once you’ve finalized the steps you can record your own action and have it stop in playback where you need to adjust settings. Makes all those star reduction steps easier and quicker. You can then share or even sell those actions once you have a set. Plus, once you have a hard-won selection you like you can go to Select>Save Selection and give it a name. PS saves it an as Alpha Channel. You can then Load Selection anytime you want to reuse it or create a mask with it. No need to create a dummy layer just to save a mask or selection. Clear skies!
Great video! Still learning the ropes and it’s videos like this that help so much!

Hey Trevor! - I feel your pain with these clouds, man it's been soul-crushing! - Really great tutorial, and interesting to see how people process in other programs to me! There's so many viable routes to success in image processing these days, it's awesome :-)
Awesome video Trevor! I use some of those methods myself! And I couldn't tell you the last night time I shot shot something! Damn clouds.
Wow this is so awesome and beautiful 👍🏻 just found this channel and subbed . Thank you so mush ps hello from England 🏴
Great video Trevor, super useful stuff here. My images are a lot better since I subscribed here!
Another way to create a star mask is to place the StarNet++ starless image over top of the regular image (in photoshop). Then change the blend mode to "difference". You'll be left with only the stars. You can use the copy merged tool and turn it into its own layer. You can then change the blend mode to whatever fits your needs.
I needed this so bad, always struggle with the stars coz they really make my image look weird. Having very less time and limited resources,I can't use starnet and i'm average at processing photos so this will help me a lot. Thanks trevor :)))))
Hey Trevor how are you, great video
Everytime I watch you video I feel like Carey Price is doing AP 🤷♂️🤣 Great Video as usual👌👌👌
Very clear video, thank you. Would you recommend using this technique with wide-field Milky Way nightscape images as well?
Good to go through thumbnails, but maybe one suggestion or add on to it would be to add DSO objects you were dealing with in the video, so we can just at the same moment check ours FOVs ;)
Literally couldn't have come at a more opportune time. Been struggling with star reduction recently and straight away can see where I've been going wrong. Quick question - does the astronomy tools actionset "make stars smaller" feather the star edges the same as doing it manually? Reason I ask is because when I run the command, I get what can best be described as dead space around the stars and it's easy to spot where they've been reduced. Just wondering if that manual feather command would get around that. Great tutorial as always 😁
Dude, I always learn something new from your vids. Your content is golden! Question, though: I may be a complete noob for asking this, but is there any difference between CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+E and CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+N+E?

Pretty sure the N isn't necessary. But it just feels good
I would love to see a technique for fixing star shapes at the edges of the frame, I use hyperstar with a non-edge C11 and have some comet shaped stars at the edges no matter how good I think my collimation is.

Read up on back focus. That very well could be your problem. The camera is too close or too far from the telescope.
Hi sir
Can u recommend best telescope to observe nebulae and galaxies
Can you make a video on sun and Uranus
Thanks for the workflow for smaller stars. Should you have a workflow for smaller clouds, you’ll be millionaire!! (3 months of almost continuous rain here 😰)

Have you ever tried using a Wacom tablet? They take a day or so to get used to, but are sooo much better for editing than a mouse.
Can you Capture m81 and m82
T3i or t7i which one is good for beginners?
Considering buying the action set. Will it also remove gradients?
Does the star reduction tool in the action set work if the image is astro landscape, or does having landscape confuse whatever algorithm is at work? If so, is there one in the action set appropriate for astro landscape?
You should be expecting those clouds. You just got a new observatory and mount 😂
Hey i have a rebel t7 and I been wanting to do astrophotography but the camera only lets me do 30'' exposure how can I change that?
Awesome image and video sir!! ❤️ Really looking for star reduction video only and you found me 😅here. Clear skies!

StarNet++ is no longer available on the link you provide......think it is now called StarNet V2, but from what I've seen and heard it does not work well. Tried the steps in your tutorial on your website for removing stars on both Win and Mac platforms, but could not get the Content-Aware Fill dialogue box to open as your steps say by hitting the " Delete" key. Theses steps in this video may be a better choice, so going to give them a run and see with an Orion Nebula image I captures a while back. Thanks!
To get rid of the marching ants, use CTRL + H.....then you can observe and adjust to taste much easier. Hit CTRL/H again to turn it off, and your're back to normal.
Hi Trevor, i used your techniques for star reduction and it works so well and nice! I have a small french Québec astrophotography channel and i was wondering if you could let me explain your technique in french, in my channel. Obviousely i will mension your name and your channel in the video because its not my idea but yours. I think it could help some new astrophographers in QC. If you don't want, im okay with that, this is the reason why i ask you this question. Sorry for my rought english, QC is QC ! Let me know!
My question is, how do you make stars larger/brighter? I wish to make certain constellations pop and there is no help anywhere about doing that…
Hi Astro back yard I want a telescope do my birthday any suggestions Which one I should test it’s my first telescope so

With the ever growing number of satellites, how often are your images or exposures ruined?
@urziwurzi9017
3 жыл бұрын
Satellites dont really ruin the whole picture. Its just a streak of light in 1 exposure out of many. When stacking the exposures later the stacking algorithms "deletes" the satellite streak and you have a normal image. Satellites are not really a problem. Light pollution is :/
Sweet Video Trevor,Thank You,I Was Trying To Figure Out At 1st Why You Werent Mentioning a Mask,lol..As I Watched🤦🏼♀️Duh,lol..I Like How You Added Them Back As Well,Very Sweet,You and Your Family Have a Great Day,Bad T Storms and Flooding Here In NWPA,Stay Safe, and God Bless❤️🙏🏻✨🌏🔭Ive Also Seen Shawn,At Celestial Photography Make Mask In Pixinsight…But That Was Confusing, lol

Hello everyone, Im pretty new to PS and I have 2 problems :( First when I go to Selection -> Color Range -> Highlight, I can't play with the fuziness and the range cursor. Also, when I go to Filter -> Other -> Minimum, I can't switch to a radius below 1 pixel and have an alert message telling me that the radius must be an integer value between 1 and 500.
@walterbobrowski4761

You are using an older version of Photoshop (Photoshop CS series, or Photoshop Elements). Trevor should make it clear that he is using the newest Photoshop CC (Creative Cloud) and thus menu choices will change. Try selecting Filter | Other | Custom. Set the center value to 900. Set the outer values to -50, then play with the scaling value between 1-1000. Play with the values until you achieve a desired effect.
Hi My Name is Taylor Im also looking into this hobby i was wondering if you sell your pictures?? and would this all work for taking pictures of planets too?? do you take pictures planets too ??
summary for the impatient: select the stars and use the minimum filter

Taking images of space to delete objects in space? That’s interesting. Let’s hope we don’t get visited by extraterrestrials that take offense to deleting their entire system.
