Mr. Charlie's looks more like McDonald'ds than McDonald's does. Most McD's interiors and exteriors are full of dull grey and black color schemes while Mr. C's had the bright red and yellow colors that pop and catch your attention. I don't know how their food is but they got the look down way more than a lot of McD's places do.

Give it a try yourself, but I personally prefer Beyond over Impossible. Impossible is more like a fast-food patty, and I think it gets closer for that reason. Beyond is thicker and juicier, more like a grill patty but the scent is a bit stronger since it is made with beat juice.

As far as knocking off the Big Mac, It is rumored that the Big Mac is actually a knockoff of the "Big Wink" which was sold by Winky's (A defunct fast food restaurant from the Pittsburgh area), and the concept of the double decker burger with a special sauce was originally introduced by Bob's Big Boy. Therefore, it would be pretty hard for McDonald's to claim that offering a Big Mac "style" vegan burger is a knockoff of their Big Mac.

I live in Jackson Michigan where the second location of doll n burger is and when we heard about the law suit, I couldn’t help but laugh, has no one ever noticed the similarities of in and out with five guys, Steak ‘n Shake, rally’s/checkers? All of these places have the same color scheme, same style menu, and at some point employees wearing white paper hates and red aprons and the cups all have white with a red patterned design. But cool that you came close to our neck of the woods and when the lawsuit was going on it really was the hot gossip around here. 😋

In Montreal, Canada, there is a place called Jack le coq, and it's a copy of Daves hot chicken. You could go in a part 2.

You didn't actually need to go overseas to go to a Chik-fil-a knock off... like a year ago when I was in Virginia there was a weird restaurant called Chickn' Eatz in Strasburg VA... the place had almost the exact same menu as CFA... sandwich, waffle fries, and the mac and cheese were all EXACTLY the same. Even the building and the general vibe were similar to CFA. Very surprised they weren't sued.

This is really a concept that's long running for restauranteurs and I'm glad I found this as this stuff intrigues me too and has for decades and I love when it's better than the original.

I clicked on this randomly and by chance I am from the town where the Doll 'n' Burgers you visited is at. It used to be an old Taco Bell and when it moved D&B came into the picture. As a local I come here from time to time but it can be a little expensive for the portions. They do have a rewards program that helps make up for the price premium. The quality is the best on the boulevard though I will say that. Every time it is fresh and made to order. Cool to see you in our town!

Looks like he's just branching out; based on a few of his food reviews I've seen, he'll overtake his competitors pretty quickly. For a 23-yr-old, he's got major poise and charisma in front of the camera. I could totally see him having a show on the Food Network if that's something he'd be interested in.

One thing: Mr Charlies doesn’t have a lot of the same menu as McDonalds. Examples: Mcflurry, McRib, Falet O’Fish, Dollar Menu, Coffee, Pancake Breakfast, Dipped cones and etc. + toys. So, I think I would give MCD the win here. + they have toys and more characters. MCD Foundation is huge!!!

In Baltimore there used to exist a chain of White Castle knock-off's called White Tower. (Upon some further research, they existed in other surrounding states as well! From what I heard in a Baltimore History Facebook group, people were quite fond of it!)

As far as I knew, using the same colors as other chains is not considered copyright or trademark infringement. You cannot copyright or trademark colors. Or other natural occurring marks or designs. And using the same color uniforms would also not be enforceable. The actual designs have to be copied. Or names of specific products or companies. Otherwise, thousands and thousands of products would be in trouble for similar colors and layouts. Also you cannot copyright or trademark natural ingredients. So if someone can copy the taste of another product, by finding the right combination of natural ingredients, then they are free to use the finished product. That is why there is off brand and generic copies of nearly every food and product in the grocery stores. They have to be man made products or processes to be trademarked. Basically, things we shouldn’t be putting into our bodies anyway. Like McDonalds “Chicken Nuggets” are made with a special process McDonald’s created, of pressing a bunch of leftover chicken byproducts into “white meat” at a high speed from my understanding. Again, something nutritionally not good for us and man made. So we shouldn’t be eating it anyway. 🤷‍♂️

I was also impressed Doll n' Burger when I was in the UK. They do a damn good job there and deserve the props!

In Sydney Australia we had a pub burger joint called Down-n-Out burger. After the subsequent lawsuit they ended up being called The Nameless Bar. The burgers were pretty fantastic and the bar had a wonderful atmosphere with citypop playing over clips of 80s anime on the TV screens. Sadly, the restaurant didn't survive covid and closed down.

I live just outside of Detroit and have never heard of this restaurant, it’s been over 40yrs since Michigan has had any in and out restaurants

McDonald’s have fallen off a lot. I’ve never been to Charlie’s but it’s clear they have way more personality and what they’re doing is a fun parody. And it’s good to have a decent quality vegan fast food place too. I think vegan meat is definitely getting a lot better in terms of taste and nutrition.
