Breastfeeding was a huge help for early hiking, no bottles to carry. The hardest time for doing outdoorsy stuff is when they are toddlers. They don't want to be carried, and they can't really walk very far. Then you learn the Zen of just looking at nature wherever you are, even if you only go 10 feet!

I bring my Poco Plus when we go for walks in the woods. Mine loves being in the carrier, but wants to walk right out the gate (that fierce toddler independence). So, she's usually good for the first quarter/third of a mile, then up in the carrier she goes!

I had a stubborn toddler and it was hard to do anything like hiking. She was a wiggly grumpy little thing. Now she’s 19 and merely doesn’t “outside” for anyone. Yeah she makes it into a verb. It sure was fun to hike with a pre ambulatory baby!

The Columbia bear suit! My son used to live in that when he was a baby (8 years ago). We bought a baby carrier similar to that one, but only used it a few times. Recently, we learned that one of our state parks has a baby carrier lending program! I love that families can hike with their babies without investing a ton of money into a baby backpack.

The idea that a child carry pack “can” support 50 lbs was motivation to get our kids walking as soon as possible. If it meant shorter hikes, but they were walking, not being carried, it was a win (They self hiked their first backpacking trek at 3.5 years)

I went backpacking with my 10 month old son. My stuff went in my backpack and baby went into a front pack which had clips so I could clip it to my backpack straps as well as the regular straps. The weight distribution was much easier. I have also baby-wrapped baby in first, then put on my backpack. Fuzzy onesie sleepers were lifesavers in keeping baby warm. Baby had his own tiny sleeping bag I had made myself. He used my 3/4 length thermarest. We coupled the thermarest to mine. I had a changing pad which was 1/2" foam covered in waterproof fabric which tri-folded. To keep him warm and dry; I made an insulated hooded waterproof baby wrap with a fleece inner layer. Washable, because baby messes happen.😂 I used cloth diapers, so brought a wet and dry bag. Deal with poop like you do your own; bury in cat hole. Of course carry out the dirty/wet diapers in the wet bag. Tactile toys and binkys a must. Babies love the outdoors believe it or not.😊

My son is 34 now, but I used to hike with him in Colorado when he was a baby. It was great! Once they can walk, if you need to pee, use a child harness. He ran off while I was peeing and hid behind a tree. My heart stopped, I'm sure. Luckily he peaked out and I ran to get him.

Fun baby carrier facts: The correct term for the flip out stand is "nerd bar". Because when you walk around with it out, you look like one. Awesome video by the way! Lots of memories hiking with all three of my kids. We used the same Gerry Carrier (1990's) for all of them. Really bare bones, but did the job. Loved the "binky drop" at the end!

Oh man baby Jane is too cute! We have the same carrier, and you'll totally understand now why my proudest hiking mom moment of the year was backpacking 20km overnight with our 18mth (30lb) son this past summer. The carrier definitely sits differently. Better get my legs prepared, as we anticipate a second little one in the Spring. Appreciate the as always informative and lighthearted content; follow-up overnighter with mom&dad?

For you seniors out there (I’m not referring to your school grade level): As I get older (almost 70) I’m experiencing very painful leg cramps (Charlie horses) more frequently. When I discovered LMNT, I decided to give it a try. As long as I’m drinking a couple cups of water each day with the added LMNT packet, or half a packet, I will not have the leg cramps. Such a relief! And I love watching Miranda Goes Outside! ❤

So cool running into you on the hike (while carrying our own baby)! Agreed hiking with a Poco carrier and a nearly 20lb baby is quite a workout, but so fun to take the littles to all our favorite places. One thing I have found *incredibly* helpful in a way that I had not expected, is hiking poles! It really takes the load off from the pack, I definitely really appreciate it on the downhills just to have extra stability and I have noticed I can go quite a bit faster when I have the reassurance of the extra points of contact.

When they get older they like to lean to one side. I pack my almost three year old grandson and he refuses to stay in the middle. But the last time we hiked he didn’t ride any of the 2.5 miles! Perhaps the doughnut he consumed on the way to the trailhead had something to do with it. I recommend using trekking poles.

I'm a big guy though so it was super easy for me to hike with 40lbs of kiddo on my back. The backpack was great for places like Woodland Park Zoo since they could see better than when they were in the stroller.

Baby Jane was so relaxed and comfortable with you because she sensed what a trustworthy and caring person you are.
