I Tried Eating 30 Plants a Week To Improve My Gut Microbiome

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Have you heard of the gut microbiome and how essential a healthy gut microbiome is for improving your overall health? When I got diagnosed with Gilbert's Syndrome (a chronic illness) last year, I threw myself into wellness and health. I want to know how to improve my health and how to feel more energised. I want tips for coping with a chronic illness. I want it all. And it turns out the gut microbiome might hold the key. So I tried Tim Spector's 30 Plants Challenge for a week to see if this is sustainable and achievable for the average person.

I'm single and buy lots of different frozen veggies and fruits. I also make vegetable soup once a week using a lot of different veggies. For breakfast i eat pretty much the same thing. I have cooked oatmeal with tumeric and pepper plus ground flax, hemp and chia seeds, and wheat germ . I add in 1 cup blueberries and some strawberries plus pineapple chunks and blackberries. All this plus different foods for dinner helps me get to around 30 plant more or less per week. The veg soup helps a lot. I also buy different grains which I add to my bowls of soup.

I've been following Tim Spector and Zoe for a while now. I have ME/CFS so like you, have been trying to clean up my diet and find a new healthier me. I am at the moment doing the Zoe test which I have paid for (with the pod that goes onto your arm) I have found, the info they're giving me I have read in his books and seen on KZread but I'm only part way through it. I've done all my testing now, just waiting for results and carrying on with the learning 😊

I had a friend who was going to do a PhD on the gut microbiome and it's link to health factors (I think it was mental health but also possibly parkinsons, I can't remember) and it's so SO interesting!! Really enjoyed this video and is a great intro to the gut microbiome. Also fun fact, whether you were born through a cesarean or vag-inally also has an impact on your GMB!

I read that in one of Tim Spector's books. He explains (I can't remember who it was now, but a scientist I think) that a man, who's wife/partner had just given birth via C-section, had rubbed a cotton pad on his partner's nether regions and then rubbed it on his babies face just after birth so that it could still have the important microbes it would have missed out. I hope this makes sense 😅

Breakfast: keep frozen berries in freezer / stewed fruit (stewed apples / rhubarb are what I keep cause they grow in garden), Throw on mixed seeds with yoghurt. For snacks, I'm trying to increase my healthy snacks by prepping a bunch at ones - chopped carrots / kohlrabi / cucumber / cherry tomato's / celery with hummus or smashed Edamame beans (Keep edamame beans in the freezer.)I don't have it all at once, last week was tomato's and cucumber, this week its kohlrabi /carrots. I'm far from good, but I find I don't have the energy/motivation most days, so on the days I do, I aim to prep extra. Carrot's/ chopped kohlrabi can be stored in water and stay fresh. For those days that you just want a plate of veg, I add in a spoon of stuffing and gravy and it feels like a Sunday roast!

This is quite good! I'm better at eating for an evening meal but not so good during the day! Ive also recently become vegetarian I have gained weight and suffer from gut problems without going into it! Also sometimes I eat if I can't sleep and usually toast which isn't good. I do need to sort myself out so will try and make changes.

Your videos look more and more professional with a lot of variety, to me, I mean that it’s more like real vlogs with shots outside or in other places. It’s a compliment that obviously I don’t manage to explain correctly. Regarding the tomatoes, it’s a pity that you don’t like them because for me, they are the easiest things to prepare, I am alone and I never have enough of them. I can eat them just like that, or in a salad, or baked in the oven, or use them for a sauce, or in a sandwich. I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, plants in general, but thirty different per week, wow, that’s not easy. Also, we must avoid to buy them packed in some plastic because plastic is bad for our health and it may contaminate the plants. It’s becoming very complicated… Basically, it means 4 or 5 different plants per day, maybe it’s doable as pastas and co are considered as plants…? Is cocoa considered as plant? 😉
