Hi 👋, Gary, In some respects woodturning is a new adventure for me as I used to be or am a Specialist joiner come cabinet maker now retired for the past five years, At 70 years young I am still learning, Especially watching tutorials like yourself creating pieces of art. Each day is a adventure watching and learning and listening and then go and have a play to see what I can make. I have two wood lathes, one is a 1949/50 Wadkin RS 8 , with a inverter drive, and Kontour 1500A . Also with inverter drive , I purchased these back in the late nineties to make components for church organs and I had a contract to make thousands of pepper mills salt mills , These were semi automatic set ups. Now using turning chisels, Just feel as if I’ve gone back in time, The experience is great. Keep up the good work and look forward to the next territorial. Phil from the moulin France.

Another nice one, Gary. I've been trying to think of what I should do with that small pile of 4x4 lumber I've got left over from a porch railing job. Now, I know. I'll have to give one of those 3-corner bowls a try. Trouble is, it's clear, straight-grained wood; I don't know how to work with that! Haha! Ah, a 3-corner burl bowl? I'll let you know how THAT turns out... Take care, --Paul

Thanks Don! Well it does take very careful cuts when doing the rim. Other than that the rest is not all that hard. I know after this one I needed to turn a simple shape. But wood ended up being some of the nicest looking I have turned. You will see it in a few weeks. Thanks for watching, Gary

Nice three winged bowl. Some times they can be a challenge to turn depending on the wood used. The biggest concern about turning this type of bowl is keeping your fingers. Last one I turned was from plywood from the big box store. It can be a big challenge keeping the wood from tearing out by the three corners. Best to use pine or Baltic birch plywood. Don’t use oak plywood. I won’t tell you how I know, but it was a disaster.

That seems like a lot of wood to waste. I wonder if a bandsaw jig could be made to cut the cube in half through the tree corners. Then you would have blanks for two, three-corned bowls, and they would be easier to mount on a screw chuck.

Hi Gary, I watched your video and Phil Anderson’s and decided I’d like to make one. I wasn’t sure I could hold the work in the lathe as you did and I was correct. So I removed the corners so I had flat surfaces for the drive and live centres. It worked out well and I now have a tri-corner bowl about 115mm corner to corner and 70mm high. I started with a piece of mahogany 93x93x94mm.

That was a very good result, Gary. Never know it was your first attempt. I've wanted to try one of these but haven't had the right piece of wood for it. That and my embellishing has been a bit too extensive, lately. I need a few straightforward projects and that amount of hand sanding doesn't look appealing, at the moment. Glad polishing pastes are so effective by hand. I suppose a person could get a buffing ball to buff the inside of the bowl and use a regular wheel for the outside when it comes to polishing. Yeah, that might save a little bit of elbow grease. Thanks for showing us your fine results and have a great week!

Great bowl. I tried an old piece of cedar post for my first attempt at one of these. Big mistake, extremely dry and brittle so chunks easily chipped off, and a lot was my inexperience too. I’ll try again someday. At least now I know it is not a “ right of passage” to craftsman turners.
