    to get into a grammar school you have do the 11+ exams. sats don’t determine what secondary you go to because that gets finalised around march and sats are in may. sats is basically for your sets and to give your end of year target grade in year 7 i think.

    Im American, and when I was watching your GCSE video, I actually found myself getting super excited watching the math being worked out. However, watching this just made my brain hurt, and made me remember why I hate standardized tests so much. Honestly, I love the process of math, and being able to work through it thoroughly, which it seems like the GCSE allows and encourages. The SAT, however, like most American tests, doesn't seem to care about the process, or the time it takes to dive into a problem. I was a valedictorian in my high school, yet I scored below average on my SATs the TWO times I took it. I recognize the UK system is very challenging, especially what I hear about A-levels, but I GREATLY appreciate the test structure, which allows for diving deep into the math, rather than rushing your brain through absurd amounts of context in far too little time.

    So this is basically the equivalent in the UK to A levels as they are what gets you into University but i guess similar to GCSE in a way due to it being compulsory. Would love you to have a look at an A levels maths exam (c3 or c4 preferably). i think you would crumble. I definitely crumbled after my C4 exam GCSE results are almost meaningless when applying to university. for the most part they look at your A level results. Edit for people outside the UK - GCSE you do at 15/16 and enable you to do A levels and have generally no real value when applying to university. A levels on the other hand are what you do to get you into university which you do at 17/18 and you generally do 3 or 4 of them rather than 15 or so GCSE

  • @YawnyPenguin

    @YawnyPenguin

    Not necessarily the equivalent as both GCSE maths and the SAT are taken at the same age and both are usually required for university admission so they're just to get everyone on equal footing/decent at maths rather than A level, which is for those who want to start specialising. Would be nice to see him do a proper A level paper though :D

  • @battlec43

    @@YawnyPenguin GCSEs are taken at 15/16 (most schools push for you to do 1-3 gcses in Y10), whilst SATs are taken at 18. GCSEs are absolutely NOT required for University admission apart from the expectation of a C in Maths and English at GCSE level (which I don't even see as a "requirement", that's just a necessity to life). University admissions in the UK are solely based off of A-levels, whilst in the US they're based off of SATs. So I really don't see the correlation between GCSEs and SATs being on the same level.

  • @oceane3293

    @oceane3293

    The SAT actually isn’t compulsory. A few states do require it and set aside a time to do it, however, most don’t. In pretty much every state, you have to schedule and pay for it yourself. You can also choose whether you’d like to take the ACT in place of or in addition to the SAT.

  • @YawnyPenguin

    @YawnyPenguin

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@battlec43 SATs can be taken anywhere between 15-18 (I believe Evan took his at 16) and you can see from its content that it's majority GCSE level stuff. A pass in GCSE maths is required for most universities and for all the courses for all the universities that I applied to required at least a C in maths (not sure what that is in the new number system, a 5 maybe?) so if you don't have it you don't get the offer. It would be unfair to compare A level maths to the SATs because the content is so different and A level maths is for those looking to continue a maths related subject at university. You can't just opt not to take the maths portion of the SAT and just take the reading part. In the US admissions are based mainly on SAT/ACT scores and your GPA (plus a bunch of other stuff like extracurricular activities.). AP tests are the most on par with A level which are taken toward the end of high school. Like A levels, they are standardized and, though they're not compulsory for university, they can contribute more to your GPA than regular classes. So there are equivalencies between SAT(or ACT) and GCSE maths/English (correlate with the bare minimum people want you to know) and A levels and AP classes/tests (and GPA system) because both are often needed to get you into university. Sorry for the paragraph, but its the summer holidays and my sleeping pattern is completely off :/

    I think individual subjects are easier than A-level (the UK university admissions board certainly thinks so - you get more UCAS points for an 'A' at A-level than you do for an 'A' on the LC). What might make the LC feel harder is you do more subjects so have to study more different things at once.

    @@xXTakingChances This is copied from another commenter: SATs can be taken anywhere between 15-18, and you can see from its content that it's majority GCSE level stuff. A pass in GCSE maths is required for most universities and for all the courses for all the universities that I applied to required at least a C in maths (not sure what that is in the new number system, a 5 maybe?) so if you don't have it you don't get the offer. It would be unfair to compare A level maths to the SATs because the content is so different, and A level maths is for those looking to continue a maths-related subject at university. AP tests are the most on par with A level which are taken toward the end of high school. Like A levels, they are standardized and they're not compulsory for university. So there are equivalencies between SAT(or ACT) and GCSE maths/English (correlate with the bare minimum people want you to know) and A levels and AP classes/tests because the content-level and understanding are very similar.

    @Bessie Belle But everyone who wants to get into university basically has to take the SAT even if you don't want to study anything to do with maths unlike A levels, so it wouldn't be fair to compare them. GCSE are more equivalent because everyone has to take those too as most universities require you to pass maths at the very least, exactly like the SATs :)

  • @battlec43

    @battlec43

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@YawnyPenguin That's a very silly way to make a comparison. You have to consider the differences between the difficulty of GCSEs vs SATs, and what the outcome of each means. One gets you into A-levels, the other gets you into University. Using that logic we can easily determine that GCSEs and SATs do not offer a fair comparison, since the qualification that allows you entry to Higher Education (which is standardised in both the US and UK) in the UK is A-levels. So the reality is one of these two outcomes: A-levels are comparable with SATs or the UK and US simply do not have comparable exams.

  • @YawnyPenguin

    @YawnyPenguin

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@battlec43 I'm ever so sorry you think it silly but I would still consider SATs to be comparable to GCSEs and A levels to AP tests. US universities don't solely base offers on SAT scores while UK universities often seem to do so with A levels. However there are universities that do seem to consider GCSE attainment as important especially to indicate a student's work ethic. Places like Oxbridge, don't have GCSE requirements but everyone knows it's obvious that having good GCSEs is important. GPA is an important factor for US universities to consider and GPA is affected by classes taken. AP classes aren't compulsory so you can pick and choose however you want. AP tests have the most comparable content to A level and they're standardized tests too which can give you an extra credit in a class which could be the difference between getting a scholarship or not. This is just my opinion on how exams are comparable. Different universities will weigh things up differently so I suppose we'll never get a straight answer ;)

    As someone who took both IGCSEs and SAT, I find IGCSEs significantly easier. You are prepared for 2 years before having to take the IGCSEs, but the SAT requires you to prepare on your own, and that's why a lot of people need to get tutors for it. It is also just way too long and you have to fill out this form before you even start which just increases your test anxiety. The SATs aren't hard to pass but they're hard to do really well on.

    Seeing a lot of comments about the A level being more equivalent to the SAT because they get you into uni but I don't think that's quite the case. Everyone in the US has to take the SAT (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm from the UK) and everyone in the UK has to take GCSE maths. A level maths is more for those who want to specialise in maths (16-18), so it wouldn't be as equal. It isn't about the age you take it, it's about comparing the maths you're required to know in each country. The SAT did actually have some overlap with A level maths though as you don't cover equations of circles or polynomial expansion until you reach A level :)
